My First Family
I wrote this song for my mom... we'll be celebrating her 90th birthday on new year's day... The reference to the island and harbor in the lyrics are there because I was actually born in Pearl Harbor, and grew up as a Navy brat... moved around a lot in my youth... I was kinda going for an awkard Brian Wilson waltz vibe thingee with this... all feedback and crits are greatly appreciated... Thanks... "My First Family" http://www.soundclick.com/TanTon

I lived at Salt Lake on Oahu Frank? For about 10 months. It's a beautiful island... This song has a certain charm to it. Merry Christmas Frank. I hope it's a wonderful new year for you personally, and for yours.

Hi Frank. Very nice song and really cool to slip into your world a bit. Your mom's gonna love it. She's the same age that my Dad would have been. I just went to my aunt's 90th birthday party and it was a blast it was to talk and hang out with from some of the great people from that generation. Merry Christmas Frank.

Listening again. This is quite touching Frank. Ya know, you have a strange but wonderful way of phrasing. Some of your parts seem to play in different signatures but always come back home at just the right time. It's way cool. Love your Django-y stuff. Anyway, I hope your mom is getting along OK.

Thanks Ed... it was... Tim, thanks again... Mom's good... she hasn't heard the tune yet, and I'm a little embarressed to play it for her... I get emotional everytime I hear it... I know what you mean about the awkward waltztime feel... I was going for a Brian Wilson vibe thing...

Frank, don't be embarrassed...whether you cry or not...just go with it. If this doesn't touch her to the bottom of her feet, I don't know what will. What a honor and a thrill to have a son write and play a song just for you. It doesn't get much better than that for a mom. :)

Well, if she is up to it, you will have to at least stand up with her when the song plays, if not dance. Yes, she will probably mention something to you about life together that you will not recall or even really remember. Such are mothers when talking to her son. Well, the song sounds fine with the mix and have a good time if having a birthday party, but do not wear the old mom out that day.

Very nice Frank. There's some wonderful intricate playing in this and it's so fluid and natural sounding. Great words with a nice sentiment for your mother. Again, your production work is just stunning. Sounds amazing. Any mother would be pleased to hear this. Happy birthday to your mom and may she have many more.

Great stuff! Hearty and powerful song and performances with a totally unique and magical family-get-together vibe! Because the vox is dominant and narrative, I'd have pondered SLIGHTLY more girthy low end (on the vox), leveled compression, less masterbuss comp-limiting and/or less HPF on the vox (or something) ... for a deeper sweet-South vox coloration. OTOH, my pondering may ruin the intreatable child-like vibe you've so well portrayed.

Sing your "long" with more of an ahhh sound. That way you won't get hung up on the chord. Good tune, not my deal, but certainly the work required is worthy of credit. Good work.
