My First Post

Hi, first time poster.

I have been working on this song for a while now and think I am getting close to what I heard in my head the first time the rhythm and melody came to me. I welcome your thoughts.

**Edit**
I have had trouble trying to insert the link.  Am I technically inept or have I read that you need a number of posts before you can attach a link?

Anyway, I have found a workaround and have typed in the link below and hopefully that will get you there.
Song title: Dr Martin Luther King

Hey Ian, welcome to the forums!

Your song is nice and progresses along well. The synth "mute" sound you have in there may be better outside of the center, IMO. I'd also like just a little more low end on the kick, though I can hear the bass okay.

Out of curiosity, is this a band or are you playing all the instruments yourself?

    Regards,
    Dan

I am with Dan on the bottom end sounds to me to be lacking any real weight and perhaps a little to much verb/slapback on the vocal.  Nicely sung though, thanks for sharing.

Ditto on the kick/low end, you're giving up a lot of emotional power there. That said, I like this song's style a great deal, sung with conviction and a nice, hooky melody with a good vocal tone, almost a lament. I also dig the delay/reverb effect, but I'm listening on headphones so YMMV on that one. This one deserves whatever you can put into it, nice work.

Thank you Dan for taking the time to listen. I will head back into the studio first chance I get to add some bottom end. I think I will add it to the kick on the mix and some more weight overall on the master. Just a little on the master. Also, I will push the synth to the side a bit and just a touch on the stereo spread. Great suggestions, thanks.

I play the instruments myself except the drums that's Superior Drummer you hear and one finger playing a midi keyboard soft synth.

Thanks also for the welcome. I have been following the Cakewalk forums for many years and Sonar is my DAW of choice.

    Have a great day.

MCI, in order to post real links, you need to get a few more posts under your belt. Try reviewing (commenting on) others people's song here. That will typically help and may even get you a few more reviews too.

    Hi J.S.,
Thanks for listening. There is defiantly nothing political here. The song is simply about an admiration for a man with a strong conviction who laid everything on the line and did not waiver. It's also a question for myself. When its my time to make a stand would I falter? I would like to think I would not. And, all of it is intertwined with the loving relationship I have with my wife. she is my greatest inspiration and always encourages me to continue to chip away at it.

    Have a great day.

    Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your comments they are very encouraging. I will take your lead and give it a bit more bottom end and hopefully I can push that emotion a little bit further.

I finally got to spend some time in the studio today and taking your advise I remixed this song pushing the muted synth fully to the right and beefing up the kick. I also add some low freq to the entire mix. I am really happy with it and I think it has lifted the emotion as Kevinwal also mentioned. Thanks guys I appreciate it.

Sounds pretty good here.   It's got a bit of an Oasis vibe to me, especially the chorus, but with a bigger arrangement.

Just one thought...   during the verses it sounds like you're holding the bass note once per change, maybe try matching up the bass to the kick so that they play the same rhythm together?  Could sound cool and maybe add a little drive.

This is a hooky song right here.  You have that ear, I can tell.  Tastefully executed and perfect lyrical theme for it too.  And your voice is perfect for it.

My only critique would be that the rhythm and cadence of the lyrics were compromised from time to time for a simpler line.  Felt kind of awkward here or there, but it's hair splitting, I admit.
