My First Song with Accordian

Never thought I'd say it but I've done a song with accordian in it .

A little background.  I was playing at a friends Church and we did a Hymn I never heard before.  I was floored.  I really wasn't prepared to do it and played Soprano Sax on it.  I fell in love as it was a really nice and intimate arrangement.  A couple of days later I asked my friend Giles to send me an MP3 of the song just so I could hear it again and so I could remember the melody/arrangement.  I really liked the song.

Anyhow, Giles sent me a scratch track.  Vox and guitar were recorded at the same time along the A/C vent, chair noise and his voice cracking from time to time.  I added everything else.  Comments welcome on the arrangement.  I tried to compress what I cold on the Guitar/Vox but unfortunately I could only do so much.

This is a great song, I'm sure our forum friend Phillip would approve (great message).

Click link below Song title is Alas and Did My Savior Bleed.

Very nice arrangement of this tune.  I'm vaguely familiar with it from my childhood.

I think the accordion should be more noticeable... bring it up a bit. I kept listing for it and then at about 3 minutes in I realized that it was in the background...I thought that was an organ back there.

The penny whistle was spot on!

    Herb,
Thanks for the comments.  I struggled with the volume of the Accordian.  It starts with the rest of the instruments @ 1:10 min.  This is the kind of feedback I'm  looking for.

    Thanks!

    Lovely vocal performance... really wonderful...
I'd like to hear more accordian and and maybe roll off the highs on the string pad a bit... Guitar sounds great as does the flute...
    Excellent work...

Hi Richard, this is beautiful, arrangement, sounds and vocals. All sounds very real and honest to me. Have to agree with Herb that it also took me a while to hear the accordion, don't know if that's a bad thing when used as a pad. If it's a feature than I would raise the volume a bit imho.

    Thanks for the compliments everyone.

As you can tell this isn't a real accordian.  It's my Korg Triton.  This is a great song to showcase a real accordian.  Does anyone here play a real accordian and would you be interested to put down a track for this song?  Doesn't Jonas play accordian(Can't remember his screen name)?

I'll try tweaking the mix as suggested.

Good accordion players are rare... that instrument went out of favor (was it ever in?) many years ago and as a result, not too many people play them now.

I really liked this. I still think the accordion could be a little more present. Maybe not louder, but bring up the high's on the EQ a little so it's more defined but not necessarily louder?

    Beautiful song.

    Hi Rich,

Very nice song and mix.  As others have noted, the accordion could come up a little...or a lot.

Either way, I'm not sure a real accordion is going to make a big difference over the Korg unless
you plan on featuring it at some point.

Anyway, like I said...very nice song and mix.

He's got a great voice!  This is a beautiful arrangement.  I knew it would be though, with you at the helm.  I'm not hearing the accordion either, but it doesn't take away from the beauty of this song.  We still sing this now and then.

I play the real deal, though I'd opt for a different register.  Do you have a chart?

BTW, if you wanna hear the best guy playing today, check out Nick Ariondo's YouTube channel.  I most of the video editing and all the audio work for him:   http://www.youtube.com/us...ndo1    His rendition of Perpetual Motion will make you wanna become a plumber!

    Thanks again to everyone!
Let's see should I work on my post count or just knock this out in one response?

@notnat: Thanks Frank!  I respect your opinions.  Working on a remix.

@morenoise & thepogue:  thanks for taking the time to comment and stop in.  I appreciate it.

@ Bub:  I like your current Avatat better than the other.  I'm working on a remix.  Unfortunately, when I get home from work all I want to do is chill.  Hopefully I'll have a remix soon.

@geere1:  You may be correct.  A real accordian may not make much difference.  However, I see it this way:  A great piano player doesn't necessarily make a decent organ player.  Therefore, in my case a saxophone player doesn't make a decent sustaining chord accordian player .  It's about interpretation and I'm not doing a good job.  BTW, Jonas is in the house and maybe he'll take a stab at the accordian.  I bet it really changes everything.

@ Janet:  I'm so glad you stopped in.  I haven't been here much and it's great to hear from you.  Giles has a great voice.  He hasn't responded to my email yet but I'm hoping to coax him into my studio to redo the VOX and guitar.  Finger's crossed.

@jsaras: I had hoped you'd see this.  Yes I have a chart and would welcome you contributing on this.  If you don't mind send me a PM so I can email you the chart.  Big Thanks!

@ Clean:  Mark, Dude!  I feel like I'm at a family reunion.  As a matter of fact all you guys are my extended family.  Group hug everyone!  Thanks for the compliment.  I wish I could sing like this.  This is Giles a friend and of mine and Minister of Music at a local Church here in town.

I've seen you here and there.  You and Warren have been doing some great stuff.  Especially the projects you've done with Dena.  Keep up the good work.

@ seraphy: Sad to say this isn't me singing.  However, I taught Giles everything I know.  It took all of 2 minutes .  Giles Blankenship has a couple of CD's.  He's a very talented musician and a great song writer.  He has written some incredible songs.

Wonderful tune Rich, Giles has a great voice. Synths all sounded pretty sweet, not really hearing an accordion though TBO. Production sounds very clean and pro.
I hope your feeling well brother, I should have some stuff for you this weekend for Beagle's project.

    Scotty,
Thanks for the listen.  The penny whistle was giving me problems.  I have (3) in the key of D and couldn't find the one I wanted to play.  After several takes and pulling my hair out my 7 yr old daughter walks into my studio with the whistle I was looking for .  Glad you liked it.

Very nice voice and very expressive singing!  A little hesitant around 1:24.  Very nice arrangement and I love the piccolo.  I would add some solo parts on the accordian instead of just as background.  It can trade off with the piccolo.

I agree with Vechung - give that accordian some air and stage time.
Perhaps the whistle could you a DROPLET of reverb?

Apart from that - a beautiful song and fantastic mix.
Very calming and easy to listen to.
    Moving too.

Once again I'm reminded why you are the only person I ever wrote a song for, with a particular vocalist in mind, YOU..  Beautifully done.  Beautiful tune with a message.  Now, I never heard an accordian.  Old ears.  I'm gonna listen again.  Was that your penny whistle?  This is just beautiful, friend!
