My First Upload

Guess it's time to give this a shot.  I've read somewhere that SoundCloud (free) streams at 128kps so I don't know if there's enough detail here. But if you would, I'd appreciate anyone/everyone tearing this one apart.  It sounds ok to me, but then I think my farts are musical.  Trying to learn this mixing thing.  It's called "Not Even Angels"
Thanks

    Hi Bob

Overall, this mix sounds very raw. The tracks themselves sound like they are recorded just fine. Here are some of my thoughts:
    • Vocals sound great. Maybe they could use a little tightening up here and there where there are slight timing problems, but they sound good. I'd suggest lining up the start of your phrases better for the background vocals so they sit better with the leads. Add a touch of compression and maybe a little more "air".
    • The drums are very mechanical, particularly the hi hat. I'd suggest adding some percussion to give some motion and energy. A shaker would do nicely. Maybe push the hat back and think about redoing the hat with more dynamics to humanize them.
    • Bass sounds okay, just needs some compression to firm it up.
    • Your guitars are nicely done. I wouldn't change too much there yet until you see how any other changes affect the mix. You may want to HPF them a little, but not so much that the change is audible. There is a little too much low end in a couple of the guitar parts. Once you've firmed up the bass, that's where you'll want the bass to sit.

    Good luck to you!

    Regards,
    Dan

Yeah, great song, nice melody! Listen to Dan, he knows what he's talking about. As for me, I'd like to hear those really nice, strong lead vocals more clearly too. I kind of found the doubling a bit distracting, maybe for the reasons Dan points out. I also felt a little like some of the instrumentation was getting in the way. I'd suggest experimenting with a bit more aggressive panning to allow the lead vocal its own space.

    This is a great start!

Bob!  Great song.  You do a great job of composing interesting melodies.  It can be hard to do over basic changes.  I liked the sound of the recording, reminded me of stephen stills or some early 60's stuff.  To me, the importance of high fidelity and good mixes pales in comparison to the quality of the song;  which is well done!  In fact the current trend of reaching  the sound of a a *recording* versus a good *composition* is a little bit of a joke.  I've read many recent tomes on the subject written by AUDIO ENGINEERS!  Believe me, most of them can't compose.  SOME have musical training, others don't.

Just wanted to say, nice song. I imagined Gordon Lightfoot singing an early Joe Walsh tune. But your deal sounds original which is great.

Totally agree with Cumpian about the hi hat. This song is organic and you don't want drum machine 8 bit hi hat on it. You might look into Addictive Drums 2 if you don't have it already.

Great song and well done, let's hear more!

Well, this has been a very exciting 24 hours for me.  Thank you all very much.  After listening to YOUR music, I can really tell the difference in clarity.  Gives me something to shoot for.  I'm glad I didn't try to master this before submitting it.  Guess I figured that if I had something going on every 32nd of a beat it would all average out :)  The vocals have more processing than hot dogs and I was afraid to touch them.  Can't seem to find that Frank Sinatra preset.  And I discovered that I can't hear AIR!  That's 10k to 20k, right?  I crank up the frequencies and my cat shreds the drapes, but me?  Nothing.  Need to look into that.  So I now have distinct directions.  Again, thank you, and I'll try to get a remix up soon.

Oh.  One last thing if you would.  What genre would you call this?  The 3 that are on soundcloud are pretty much what it all sounds like.

    Bless you.

Your voice has a Gerry Rafferty feel to it that I like very much -- this is a good demo of your song and brings out the melodic elements of it very nicely.  Good job !!
