My Hard Earned Money

This is my latest tune, thankfully the lyrics are not from experience.

The rhythm is my new Taylor.  I double mic'ed it with two condenser mics.

Enjoy, I hope.   Daryl

Nice work Daryl. Lyrics are well written, sound is tight, effects bang on. Well done.

Another great song wonderfully written, performed and produced by the Master. All you needed to do was add my name somewhere in the lyrics and and I could share it around the web as "Life Story"! BUT I GOT THE DOG!

That's nice, your site even works w/my iPhone :-)

It's hard to make "and easy to spend..." The Taylor sounds good but I can't hear it well, not saying it's not sitting well in the mix because to me it is.. I don't hear any low mids from it thought? It's tricky to use two condensers and not get comb filtering. How did you have them positioned? Did you use any tools to help with the dual condenser input to help prevent the filtering? If so, please elaborate.

Good song, and nice performances and recording as always.

James, Shad, Malcolmb, John  Thank you!

Robby,  Obviously I don't know what I'm doing.  I just set them both up fore and aft of the sound hole and mixed the two tracks as best I could.  What should I be doing?   And can you recommend any good reference material?

Re: My Hard Earned Money 2013/06/05 23:43:57 (permalink)
Well, there are a few options, there's a trick in recording wi/2 condensers in different positions. I don't do it for that reason. I use a figure 8 positioned w/my guitar below the 8 for the side, with a condenser just below it pointed directly at the o hole. The figure 8 track is recorded in stereo. When you're done you have two tracks. You take the fig 8 track and clone it, pan 1 hard left, the other hard right, and one of them you invert phase on, this gives you a true mid/side recording. And you can control which track is left and which is right as it will probably be naturally to one side or the other.

And send all three tracks to the acoustic bus where you compress, excite, eq, etc. put your verb send there too (on the bus) and send the bus to the master.

Thanks Robby.  I will experiment with that, I have a lot to learn as this is new to me.  While the onboard pickups do sound nice live, it was not what I was after in recording.  I tried mixing the DI and mic tracks but I liked two condensers better, even done incorrectly.   I'm off for the weekend but will be experimenting next week with my next tune.

    Thanks.

I know it isn't country, but I could not help but think about Jerry Reed playing and singing "I got the shaft".... especially when you hit that twin picking in there.

Well one thing you can do is invert the phase on one of the tracks? That "may" help. It's tricky recording a guitar w/two mics. I'm not saying you did not get a good sound here, just trying to point out the potential pitfalls. What you want to avoid is getting two S's (on their side) where they don't quite line up? That's where you'll get the comb filtering I spoke of, potential phasing, and frequency cancellation. So by inverting the phase on one track, you "flip the S?" There are gear heads here who understand it much better than do I. And I don't mean to misrepresent my ahem "expertise?" as an engineer LOL! Ex spurt is more like it.

I agree w/Herb about the mine and "the shaft..." Been there, done that. :-( Maybe you should post a NEW BANDCAMP LINK!!!

Herb, thanks for thinking of me in those terms.  Jerry Reed was a cool picker.

Freddy, That's just what came up as I was having some fun with this.  My personal experience is polar opposite, but I can empathize.  Thanks.

Robby.  I'm anxious to try your suggestions.  I just got back from a fishing trip in the wilds of Michigan's Upper Peninsula so once I'm unpacked I will give this a try.  Thanks for the information!

Frank, I thought you might appreciate the humor.  I appreciate your listening!

    Daryl,

The intro sounded a bit Chet-Atkinish, nice job on this song.   To me your singing voice is very happy sounding, I still felt good listening to the demise of your character;)

This is classic, Daryl.  You always write great lyrics which complement each and every song you do.  Don't over complicate the recording of your acoustic.  Usually the easiest solution is the best.  Hope you write a ton of songs on this guitar.

Robert -  My 10 year stint doing Eagles, Pure Prairie League, etc has left a permanent mark on my sound no matter what I do.  Thanks!

Mark - One can aspire to no higher goal than to make someone feel happy.  Thank you!

Terry - Thanks so much for the nod on the lyrics.  Reverb is something I've been fighting all my life.  I try to use less, but it's a struggle.

Lynn - Glad you like the lyrics.  I just was working on a new effort and I recorded the Taylor through my amp and that is a pretty good sound for flat picking.  Thank you!

A nice sounding one. Not my cup of tea in general, but well done. Everything is in its place and well balanced, as well as I can tell on my crappy wee speakers. Excellent guitar tones and work.

I had my speakers way up due to doing something else previously and I almost jumped backwards over my chair when that first big hit happened.
