My Hippie chick song

It's at the top of the list.

My humble head phone mix. I'm doing everything. I hope it is well received.

HA! First to the Party!  I'm ready to protest something and go out and break something after hearing this!!! "WE STAND UP FOR THE LOOK OUT!" Dang Skippy! Best you have ever done IMO Robby.  It's hard to comment about specifics with your music Robby because there are just too many great highlights.  How should I say this, perhaps, Excellent performance, nice mix, and great song! Thanks BIAB, I agreed with you and actually noticed that floor tom b4 I posted it? I revisited it and put the 1st remix up w/a lowered floor tom. I appreciate your feedback.

    This is excellent Robbay.
    However,,,,,,,,,

    here's my crits.

To me, the guit has to much jangly high end. put a slope on it. it doesn't need to be sparkly.

there's some vocal thing going on right before the 'closer to fine' line that's real confusing to my ears. I don't know what you were doing there.

All that said, I think it's phenomenal.

OK... good song... I like the way you write.

It's only life after all.... nice.

OK on to the mix. Everything sets in the proper position, however, the over all tone of this mix is harsh. It makes it kinda hard to listen to.  Compared it to Jenny... that is a nice sounding mix. Take a listen and compare them....

Just my 2 cents....listening on cans.

Robby your vox are superb but they seem a bit too hot. Just my opinion.

I like the mix but it seems like a bit more panning may help to give just a bit more space to each instrument.

Not sure why the banjo(is is a banjo right?) changes panning but where it ended up (more on the left) felt better than when it was more predominant on the right.

    Nits to be sure.

    Good job.

Really awesome tune in my book. Loved the vocal performance and harmonies. Really great choice of instruments. Mandolin right? Everything very nicely played. I'm thinking this is the remix? Mix sounds great to me,vox guitars well balanced and spacious. If I were to pick nits, I thought there was a short string part about 3/4 through that could possibly come down in volume a tad. Another great tune from one of Cakewalk's finest.

Really sweet sounding song Robby, I loved the guitars, they were really crisp and in your face in a good way.  Did you record the acoustic in stereo, it sounds like it.  The song sounded really stereo.

I can't fault the track, great work!!

Hey I'm going to thank folks individually for their comments and recommendations? But I have to say I puffed up a bit over the comments on my guitar :-) I have a really nice acoustic? It's a James Goodall Walnut Jumbo? (below) With a pair of Mojave Audio MA-100s in an "X-Y" configuration? (As shown below). Approximately over the 12th fret.

Then they (the MA-100s) run through their little tube components, i.e.,

And then out of those and through the two mic pre's (an Avalon 737, and a UA, shown below)

And then the resulting WAV files, I took one and shifted it by about 20 to 30 ms, and then inverted the phase on that one. And panned one 100% L and the other 100% R. And sent the resulting two tracks to a bus, i.e., "Acoustic 1" and then sent that bus to another bus called "Acoustic" and I recorded the guitar as two tracks, one played open, and one capoed up? sending the 2nd capoed guitar to "Acoustic 2?" (two tracks, X and Y) and then Acoustic 2 to "Acoustic" and then sent Acoustic to the master.

I also used a variety of plug-ins and EQ techniques on the acoustic guitars. I'm glad to share those details as well :-) I worked really hard to get a killer acoustic guitar sound on this tune... And I don't claim to be an expert? I'm just trying to get better, like all of us!

Hey Robby. This sounds great. Just easy to sit back and listen too. The acoustic sounds detailed and vibrant. There's a synthy pad sound that's not that great around 2:40 but minor nit. Very full sounding mix. Very enjoyable.  Thanks.

Performances were great. Nice re-telling of this sapphic anthem.

I found the banjo picking distracting. Not sure why, but it should fit, but it just seemed off somewhere.

The synthy thing in the middle was not great.

The vocal answer at 1:10 needs to be re-eq'ed and hpf quite a bit.

Overall, not much dynamics: there didn't seem to be many changes during the song. The big sing-along payoff at the end is sorely needed.

Man, you got some real nice gear!

Robby, Really nice work, and nice gear too! For me the percussion did not add much, but hey, what do I know. Where I heard them come in I found myself going "what was that", instead of knowing what it was I just heard. That nit aside I liked the production.

I've never heard this before. The Indigo Girls.

When the song first started playing I thought it was going to be Green Day's Time of your life. I guess Greed Day stole it or just happened to write the same song. It's possible.

Very well done! The performance of the guitars and your voice are great.

    Hey, Robby,

Wow, I almost missed this spectacular cover, but I'm very glad I scrolled down the page!

The acoustic sounds great, the vocals and overlapping harmonies are fantastic and the mix sounds really nice.  There were a couple spots where the banjo seemed to stick out for some reason, but it was only for a second or two, and it wasn't a showstopper, just a minor nit.

Really nice work, buddy, have a good one!

Hey there Strummer, thanks very much for your comments :-) I love my gear, collected it over the years...

Big Bad Bob! :-) I enjoyed this one, it was in my wheel house :-)

James, CSN is one of my main influences! :-) Thanks so much.

Mark, thank you so much! I do enjoy singing :-)

Bobby, I've been playing since I was a kid, maybe 11 or 12? Mostly guitar early on, then bass in a band(s) and then keys and other stringed instruments? And I tried out for a metal band as a lead singer? And they hired me and I laughed and walked away! (LOL!) Told them I just wanted to see if I could get it :-) But choir from 1st grade. Thanks for listening and commenting. :-)

Prima, thanks so much for listening and commenting. And I agree? With 3 chords? You can only do so much "originally?" so it's been done... And with my original stuff too? It's mostly 3 chords... So we are all interpreting themes that have been done? So it's all about puting our own feelings in to it. But I guess the words and melody are "copywritable." :-)

Strata, thanks very much, I love your productions as well! And I turned some of that percussion down like 20 times before I posted this! :-)

Warren, glad you're still kickin brother! Keep on keepin on!! :-)

James yo Yo YO!!! One day... One day I will impress you!! I live for that day!! :-)

Rino, LP and anyone else I may have missed I really appreciate your support! :-)

I've been busy working on the Christmas tune, and spending time with the boy (priceless...)

And life like everyone else. Will be listing to some of the other offerings by fellow forum members this weekend and getting my turkey in the brine and getting ready for the holidaze!

Enjoy them... Time is a river, it flows past us? We raft down it, and one day, we're at the ocean. There are rapids? There are smooth wide parts? Rocks? We're all at different parts of the river. Navigate it the best you can.
