My House Hit By Tornado - North Carolina

This really stinks!
I'm visiting my motherin Austin Texas and got a call from my Bro-in-law that our neighborhood took a direct hit from a tornado.  My brother in law lives across the street.  A downed pole mounted transformer fell on top of his company vehicle and damaged his home.

The apartment complex directly behind my bro-in-laws home had the roof taken out.  Al the debris from the apartments went into my yard damaging and totally removing the fencing in my yard.  My bar-b-que pit is in my living room all windows and glass sliding doors are gone.  I have roof damage, tool shed is completely gone (golf clubs too), both personal vehicles damaged too..  It appears my studio is ok.  Two homes directly behind me are totally gone, I'm told.

Best of all, my brother-in-law is ok.  My Pastor lives in the same neighborhood and is ok too.  Thank God!  Police are keeping people away.  See Here

Trying to get back home now.  I wasn't scheduled to return until Wednesday.  I covet your prayers.  Pray for the folks in my town as several neighborhoods sustained damage and some have lost their lives.

I'll try to keep you posted.

Rich

Thanks Spacey.  I'm kinda anxious to get home to prevent further damage to my home in the event of rain and such.

I understand and would be too. This type of disaster is not unknown
    to me.
What bothers me and usually raises flags is that when things go bad
I consider side effects. Like it's easy to not be focusing on the task at
hand because of other thoughts...such as the one you mentioned.
So stay focused and don't let this lead to a chain reaction.

That's so sad, Rich. Sorry to hear that.  It must be tough being away at this time.  I was just looking at the tornado damage in OK.  Seems like they're everywhere.  I should quit complaining about the non-damaging wind we're having around here.

I hope you can get home safely and get things cleaned up and replaced quickly. So glad it wasn't worse.

So very sorry Rich...went through the same about 3 years ago.  In fact we had the same storms that attacked you night before last and there is much devastation here in our area.  Keep a positive attitude if you can and hope your insurance company is as good as their word.  My sympathies.

Rich, sorry to hear the news....

We managed to dodge the storm here in Sims. We had some wind and heavy rain. In Wilson, not far from us.... 5 miles or so, there was substantial damage.  Walgreens and the corner where it's located took a pretty direct hit. A tractor trailer was overturned in the parking lot as were some cars. I'm seeing on FB that quite a few homes in the county were practically leveled. Looks like Wilson took a direct hit.

I haven't heard anything from Greg's town but again, Raleigh had some severe damage in a few places.

All people are OK - that's the most important.  The rest is just "stuff" though it can definitely be a pain in the ass to fix and replace everything.

That said, if you HAVE to survive a tornado, I can't think of a better place to be than in another state!

    Okay here, Rich.
I just got home from work at midnight, but the storm hit in the vicinity of my WalMart*. It was pretty intense for awhile.
I was really worried because I heard on the store 2-way radios that the Smithfield WalMart* is no longer there. Smithfield is not that far away from my house.
We sold out of camp stoves, Coleman fuel, the small propane gas tanks for those stoves, flashlights, chainsaws, most batteries and battery-operated radios. We would have sold out of generators if we'd had any. The lines were a block long, it looked like.
I was kept busy running the large propane tanks for barbecue grills from the garden center to the main entrance (the garden center was locked up) for customers without electricity.
Got home, the house is undamaged, but I had a message from my brother the programmer that a tornado went right through his backyard. The trees that were behind his house are no longer there and his neighbor's trees are on my brother's pick-up truck.
I hope all turns out well for you, and the insurance will cover the damage, post-haste.

Sorry to hear about the tornado Rich. I hope everything works out ok with the insurance and all that. Half an entire town just got taken out by a series of tornado's last weekend here in Iowa.

I have pictures I've taken of funnel clouds dipping down out of the sky in front of my house but never connecting to the ground.

This time of year can be deadly. :(

Rich, looks like you were fortunate, A few broken window and shingles off the roof.

So many lost everything. As the damage reports and pictures are coming in from all across the state, it is clear that we had a major event last night.

I had been here at the house all day recording and working on some music. Around 5pm, I was getting hungry and thought about a steak or something similar. My wife and daughter are on a school trip to NYC so I'm here alone. I almost got in the car to drive to town to eat but decided to cook some noodles with sauce instead. It's amazing how God works to protect us because I would likely have been near the tornado touchdown area at 5:30pm, the approximate time the storms with their mayhem were happening.
As it turned out, I was totally oblivious to what was happening in Wilson until my phone rang and my mother in law asked if everything was OK in Sims, since she had heard about the tornado's in Wilson and other communities. That's when I turned on the TV for the first time since my family left and saw the damage that had occurred all over the state.

Tornadoes can totally destroy the house next to yours and leave your house basically undamaged. Even so, when your neighbor's house is damaged or destroyed, it affects you in many ways as well.

It looks like this will be a busy week coming up. I have several customers that are in the touch down area, so I expect I will be getting some calls tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone for your support and prayers.

My home and personal belongings are just stuff.  I am greatful to God that I wasn't home.  Had I been home there is no doubt my 7 year old daughter would be trumatised for life.  I probably would have been impailed with debris trying to do something foolish.  Two homes behind me are gone and half of the one to my right is destroyed.  The damage to my home is very minor compared to others.

Thanks to the folks at Delta airlines I am returning home tomorrow without incurring and change fees.  I anxous to get hometo help my community.

    Regards,
    Richard.

I just heard the local news service report that the National weather service is currently estimating 81 tornado events in NC yesterday state wide. That is a new record. the previous record was 61.

that's not the kind of new record we want to try to set .

Best wishes for a safe and speedy trip home Rich.
