My Hurricane Project (Rough Mix)

Here is a tune I wrote for some Scottish friends of mine and recorded a few weeks ago when I got the new Royer R-101 Ribbon mic. The fiddle was recorded with the Royer, the 12-string acoustic was recorded with a matched pair of Rode NT-5's and the piano and bass were DI. I got a rough mix down during the storm, power flickering and all.  Mix/performance comments welcome!

I like it, nice melodies and excellent fiddling as always.  I sat here, listened and just spaced out to the music.  The mix sounded fine to me
Nice job Scotty, thanks for posting this

beautiful song, great mix, the Royer gives the fiddle an almost viola-like quality, boy is it smooth! you will prob need to watch that in more dense pieces...

    Hi, Scotty,

How are you, buddy? Doing great, I hope!

This is an absolutely brilliant, very beautiful, melodic piece of music!  It always amazes me how you can write so many interwoven, textured, flowing melodies into your amazing violin playing, and capture it all so perfectly in your mixes.  This is a fantastic, warm sounding, pro quality mix.

    Excellent job, Scott, truly breathtaking!

Sounds great – each instrument rings out and it’s well balanced. Snappy little melody woven over some nice chords changes. Very pro sounding –  as in “written by and  recorded by”  real pros. Great job.

Such a nice tone and recording on the fiddle.  The mix and production is very good.  I love the arrangement and the instruments really complement with the fiddle.  Beautiful song.

    LpMike,
Thanks man! Glad you liked it!

    mgh,
Thanks for your kind words and for the EQ tip. I EQ'd the fiddle to sound like a viola in this case but will try to keep it thinner for denser mixes as you suggested.

    Bob,
Thank you very much for all of your observations and kind words! One day I hope to rock out as good as you do, but I have a long way to go where that's concerned.

    Manny,
Thank you for your kindness and observations.

    Vicente,
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it!

    Tom,
Why, thank ye very much, my kind sir! I appreciate you taking a listen.

    Rick,
Thanks for checking it out and I'm glad that you like it. As you probably know, I did this in a hurricane, riding backwards on a jet ski and then surfing to shore while listening to your surfing tune. Yep, that was some tricky playing/mixing.

As usual, it's a great production, Mister One-Man-Band!

All of the instruments sound crisp and clean.  I would give my left one to be able to produce a sound like that.

You are building for yourself a super group of "toys" for your studio.  Do you have a Neumann mic yet?

Thanks for posting, Mister Scotty.  I always thoroughly enjoy your music.

    My Best,

Thank ye, my friend! No, unfortunately no Neumann yet, but I'm thinking that I don't really need or want one.

I thought the piano was a little dark relatively...that'd be my only comment.  But man...what great song...nice melodies, playing, mix...all around great job!  Applause!  That is one happy sounding tune!  That'd make a great soundtrack for some upcoming holiday get togethers.

Thank you Don. I assume that you mean that the piano is dark once the fiddle comes in? If so, I agree. Once I get back to mixing it I will be panning it further out to the left and EQ'ing it so that it isn't being burried by the bass as much.

    Quite excellent and extraordinary (fiddle-wise).

I think I detect more rests with this Waltzy one, which helps me.
