My Last SONAR Song
I'm keeping SONAR on my system for as long as it keeps working, but I'm not taking my production PC offline and freezing my operating system (Windows 10) or taking any other extraordinary steps to keep SONAR running through Microsoft updates. SONAR has been my only DAW, but it's the past, and I want to work in an environment that's still alive, so I'm looking for a new digital audio home. Samplitude seems to be powerful and stable and full-featured, and I may switch to it. They have a user forum, very helpful, but not like this one. (Nothing is like this one, and I intend to lurk here as long as it's up and running.) The Samplitude forum has a section called "The Listening Room," where it looks like people post their work at the rate of about ten songs a year. Not ten songs each member, but ten songs, period. They're not into sharing, I guess. Maybe the new ex-SONAR users over there will change things. I haven't been active here, and now I wish I had been. When I have posted something and asked for advice, you have all been generous, kind and helpful, but I just didn't get around to doing it much. Now -- since I'm moving on -- it won't seem right to post stuff done in another DAW here. Every year I record a song for Christmas. This one was started in SONAR before the Big Announcement, and I finished it in SONAR. I'm not planning to fine tune the mix or anything -- it was done for kicks -- so I'm just putting it here to share with all of you, my imaginary friends. Have a Rockin' Christmas!

very cool Larry. Merry Christmas No plans to move DAWs here - my Splat is working perfectly. (Although I do have Studio One installed just in case!)

I like the arrangement. Has a Leon Russell vibe to it. I do almost everything in Adobe Audition these days, but since they've gone to that silly cloud subscription nonsense like Microsoft, looks like I'll be looking for another kind of DAW altogether in a year or so. I have no idea what I'm gonna do. I know I won't touch Acid now that Magix bought Sony. (I've had nothing but bad experiences with Magix in the past.) Pro tools is ridiculously priced. I love Audition. I used to like Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro a lot too. I fear I will never find anything else as good as those.

With Samplitude and Pro Tools out of the running, I suggest you look at Presonus Studio One and Mixcraft by Acoustica. As these things go, they're pretty easy to learn. I think they both have good crossgrade-from-SONAR deals going on right now, and I think if you liked Guitar Tracks you should take a hard look at Mixcraft. They have a fully functional demo. Good luck!

Good! I'll look into them. Why I favored Guitar Tracks Pro over Sonar was because Cakewalk loaded Sonar down with a bunch of midi stuff that I would never use. I always mastered mix-downs with Cool Edit because that's what Cool Edit did better than anybody, and then Cool Edit Pro came out and I started using it for tracking as well. I stuck with it after Adobe bought it because they also brought the software developer (and owner) on-board. Then a few years ago he left Adobe and they haven't had a major upgrade since. Not that it needs upgrading. I think it's nearly a perfect program as is. But I won't abide this cloud junk. Eventually I'll probably have to upgrade my OS (still running Windows 7 on a seven year old machine) to something that Audition likely will not run on. Until then, I'm sticking with it. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will last a long time, but somehow I doubt it.

Great job. It was a great Holiday Season for me. I'm going to miss it. This was a good send off. Truly, I don't understand the worry about Sonar not working because of a future MS update. Yes, it definitely has quirks but I am pretty sure I can fire up Sonar X1, X2, or X3 and complete a project so why not Platinum? In fact, I just fired up X1 Producer and laid down 16 audio tracks at once and put in an AD2 drumbeat before I hit the submit button on this post. Still works. How old is X1? Wasn't XP the OS back then? Or, was it 7?
