My Life

This is my band, The Night Burns Black.  I recorded the drums in the drummer's garage, then tracked the guitars, bass and vocals here at the house.

    The song is good.

I'd like to hear more about how you recorded this.  How did you record the guitars? The drums? What miking techniques did you use, one shot or multitrack, you know..... more details.

    My initial observation is:

The mix is weak and light on the bottom end, and the snare doesn't sound like a snare. I don't want to delve too deep until I know more about the process that you used to arrive at this mix.

I sounds like one or two mics in a room recording live.

    I like the song.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

I recorded the drums with a CAD 7-piece.  The tom and snare mikes are clip-on directionals.  The kick is a boom-mounted directional.  Then there are two overhead condensers for the cymbals.

I have gotten some negative feedback about that snare sound from other people as well.  Personally, we all kind of enjoyed how it sounds, although we thought it was tuned kind of high.  I tried to put a pitch shifter on it to bring it down a notch or two, but there was too much bleed through from the overheads.

The guitars and vocals were tracked in our 'booth' here at the house.  It's basically a room the size of a walk-in closet with wool blankets lining the walls to deaden it.  Both the guitars and vocals were recorded with MXL V63M condenser mikes, running through an ART Tube MP pre, one part at a time.
