My MIDI Clips have extensions in Sonar X3 Producer

Hello all!

I'm not sure if I'm going to explain this properly but I'll do my best.

I am using X3 Producer and, whenever I am deleting MIDI information - say I have a long clip and I want to get rid of a section in the middle, there is the extension thing that happens that still ties both ends of the original clip together so they only way I can move the second half is by splitting the clip and trimming these extensions to match the actual beginning and ends of the MIDI information. This wasn't happening with earlier versions and it takes up a lot of time unnecessarily and I'm wondering if perhaps it's caused by some setting I 'm not aware of.

I e-mailed pre-sale support and asked if this was something that was resolved with more current versions  - maybe I just have to upgrade - and they suggested I get the trial of the latest version and try.  As I'm in the middle of a project right now and am trying to avoid any conflicts with versions that might confuse matters, I'm hoping someone just knows the answers to one or both of these questions, those questions being: 1) Is it just a setting? and 2) If not, is it resolved in later versions?

Thanks so much!

I have both X3 Producer and Platinum.  As far as I know, the feature works the same way in both.

Cutting events in the middle of a MIDI clip does not change the length of the clip.  A clip is an object. This allows you to copy and paste data to other tracks or clips, without changing the timeline.

If you split the clip into several new clips, or objects, you can then move or otherwise manipulate any selected new clips as objects. If you cut a selected clip, and choose "fill the hole" as an option, the following clips slide over.

Thanks for your response, abacab! So, from the sounds of it, this is just the way it works. I am aware of the "delete the hole" option but that doesn't seem to shift the MIDI over because it is still considered one long clip as opposed to two pieces. I appreciate that it does help to keep things intact if you want to otherwise keep the information on the same timeline but it would be nice to have an option for another approach as it basically adds 20 seconds to every edit I have to do for this particular project.

But it is what it is! Thanks again for responding!

Are you using the "bounce to clip" function after editing? Very important!

Thanks for responding, Anonymungus! That's actually kind of the problem. It seems to be bouncing to clips automatically and I don't want it to. I would rather have the two pieces that I can manipulate independently and separating and trimming every edit, which I have to do for this particular project, just seems to make the process take longer.

There is a new feature for Sonar that Cakewalk currently has in development for an upcoming release, called "ripple editing".

But I think it still is only planned to assist with the arrangement of clips when some are selected and moved around, and how the rest of the project reacts.

It doesn't sound as if ripple editing will affect editing events within a clip, unless it includes automatically splitting clips that extend across selection boundaries.  In any case, it's not here yet to test with ...

Assuming you're working in the Track View:

    - Hold Alt and drag with the Smart tool to split out the section to be deleted.
    - Select the separated clip and hit delete.
