Very nice eq, great level on lead vox. Big sound. The drums, though, get covered a touch when it gets loud, imho. Great work!

Sounds great to me! Not a real fan of this style of music. Reminds me of a cross between a Dashboard Confessional song and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuEpoYIsk_A

Real nice and spacey while remaining really 'up front' (assuming that means something, lol)

    Great mix.
But yeah the song is dull dull dull.
Somebody needs to do a dirty Dutch trance techno version to wake it up. Maybe two minuses might equal a plus.

Andrew, I just listened to Synkotron's version, and I now have come to the conclusion that the raw materiel somewhat dictates the outcome.  This style of music is very popular now, and that creates certain preconceptions, I suppose.  I hear differences between the two versions that possibly stems from different monitors.  As is typical of this "modern" paradigm, it has sparkle up the yin yang, but you did a fine job of tempering it so that I might enjoy this after a few listens.  Frankly, I'm too chicken to try this so I admire you both and all else who have taken the plunge.

    All the best,

    interesting mix,
i like your approach with the vox level, and the brightness..
but this mix sounds distorted to me.
especially when it gets to the last third of the song when it's just one constant volume.

Thanks Batsbrew, Can you describe the distortion your hearing, the peak rms for the song is -10db and my ceiling is -1db and I made sure there was no intersample peaking going on, is the distortion in one particular part of the frequency spectrum? Is it one particular element? I wanna go back to the mix and have a look and listen to what might be happening.
Cheers for listening and the valuable feedback.

    hey andrew....

i don't think those levels are out of hand,
i like a peak rms in more of the -12 to -14 range,
you still end up with a dynamic range of about 10 or 11,
and -1db peak is fairly safe....

    it's more a SATURATION thing i'm hearing..

i haven't seen any of the stems,
but it seems that adding any brick wall limiting at all, on top of what the stems already have processes,
is bringing out more 'crunch' and distortion........

this gets into a very touchy-feely area,
that is stuck somewhere between the volume wars, and having a good modern mix that sounds CLEAN.

i would bet that every mixer that used these stems,
kind of came across the same issues.

and just depending on your mix approach (i like your approach) you may or may not bring out the worst of the stem issues, simply by applying any further dynamics processing than what is already on the stems.

A real good mix, there are elements such as the vocals, and softening the transitions of that intro acoustic, that I would have scored you highly on if I were a voter.

Thanks man, I havent got back to the meix yet but I was trying to think of eq's I did on the tracks and I remember that I did boost the highs quite a lot on the string tracks, I presumed they were sampled strings and I find that if you give a high boost to sampled strings and take away a little in the high mids then more often than most they will sound better in a mix with guitars and vocals, not a rule but seems to work a lot, Anyway I have a feeling that I may have overdone the high shelf and the distortion could be coming from the string tracks, especially as their all playing together near the end. Cheers for the great feedback mate, something to listen out for in the future.

I caught the phase issue on the overheads and I replaced the snare so didn't have to worry about it there. anyway I couldn't be arsed doing any more to this.

Thanks man, All the tracks on my soundcloud are tracks that I have mixed, I'm a member over at Dueling Mixes and Rate the Mix. I had no input other than mixing them. The track called ' When The Time Comes' is one of my own and I did everything on that track, wrote it, played all the instruments, did all the vocals and mixed it.
