My Song is on Toontrack's Country Music Blog
Hey guys, Toontrack has been promoting a Country Music Blog this month. They asked for song submissions, so I sent one in that used their Music City SDX pack for the drums. Scroll down to the "Customer Jukebox" and you can see it in there. I'd welcome any feedback on the mix, as it's not necessarily finalized and not mastered. The song is my homage to 80s-style Nashville ballads. Hope you enjoy! Cheers, Eddie

I liked it. You should let us know the song title! For the production, check some of your pitch at times. For the mix, overall good but maybe the lead vocal is too up front in places like the chorus. I am not sure the vocals are sitting perfectly in the track. Reverb? Ambience? I really like the arrangement. Not sold on the snare sound for some reason. Too course maybe? I love SD2 and you have bunches of snares and presets to use. This one was just OK IMO. Loved the pedal steel! I wish you the best on this.

Rimshot, thanks for the nice comments. I tend to leave the lead vox a up-front prior to (pseudo-)mastering, as typical limiting/widening seems to set them back a bit. Glad you liked the tune! Oh, the title is "I Pretended She Was You." BTW, the snare was from the Music City SDX. It reminded me of the era whose sound I was attempting to emulate. Cheers, Eddie

Hi Eddie, I love this song and I like you vocals. If I'd change anything it would be to make that kick and bass come through with more richness and clarity. The best I find to mix those things is to A/B mix with a commercially recorded track. Otherwise I love it!

Hey thanks for the compliments, guys! Like I said, the mix isn't necessarily final (when are your own tunes ever finished, anyway?) so any comments on the sound are appreciated. Cheers, Eddie

Hey man, I really like the music and mixing. Country isn't really my thing, but I can tell you're talented and you have a great voice for it too. The lyrics might be a little too simple here and there, as the song kind of stalls on some awkward moments, but they were few and I forgot about them quickly. I've got to remember that line if my wife catches me with her sister...."But I pretended she was you". Lucky me, her sister hates me so I don't think I'll ever have that problem...

Very good! I love old country style tunes.
The mix is good. Vocals are up front like country likes to hear them. I didn't hear any vocals that were off pitch that stuck out to me as needing fixing. I hear what Rimshot is pointing out that the vox are a tiny bit too loud and kinda stand out from the mix a bit... the instruments seem to be running some heavier reverb than the vocals.... I'm thinking some very minor adjustments to the vox level and the reverb levels in the song would fix this. I'm talking about very small changes. The instruments sound good. I'm a fool for a sweet steel guitar. The steel solo was the icing on the cake. With a running time of 5:37, it was extraordinarily long for a country song. Not a problem for what you're doing with it. However if you're aiming for an artist with radio hopes.... gotta get it under 3:30 ideally. That may not even be a consideration.... just mentioning it. The song works well and didn't really seem to be that long. It's hard to keep slow story songs short.
Song writing is good on this. In the bridge, there's a few "vocal bobbles" as I call them where the flow is off as you try to squeeze in a few extra syllables. I hate to tell folks to re-write something because mostly, they take it wrong. But... there's a few places such as in the bridge where fixing the flow problem.... you want a natural rhythmic flow to the words.... would be a nice improvement. Many non-lyric writers may never notice things like that. So it could be a coin toss decision....
Overall, man this is a great country song. And I'm sure this one packs the dance floor with the folks who love a good slow dance. Nice work.

Shucks, guys, thanks again for the nice words! Y'all are too kind. I'll undoubtedly revisit the mix and maybe even lyrics to this tune in the future. All my songs are "works in progress." I'm sure many of you can relate. :-) Cheers, Eddie

Country is not my thing but it sounds good in the main, perhaps a little more kick and bass, on the vocal as noted by Rimshot a little tweak or two just to get it sitting in the mix more. Congrats on making the jukebox and thanks for sharing.
