My Windows 8 Experience

For those interested...

I installed the Windows 8 Release Preview yesterday...

What a waste of time...
My Bluetooth keyboard and mouse - non functional...wouldn't accept the software....BOTH are Microsoft Products
My Quad Capture - non funtional - wouldn't accept the software

AND non of the Metro Apps would work...no mail, no nothing...

WOW ...if that's the release candidate then it will probably be worth holding off on till some of the bugs are gone..

Waste of a whole day...

Oh yeah...surprisingly...the ILOK worked!!!

    LOL about the iLOK!! :)

You would think at least the Microsoft products would work......I wonder if a lot of people have the same experience?

Anything I've read so far about Win 8 is it's pretty much 7 under the hood with most of the new stuff aimed mostly to make a PC a docking station for peoples ithingy's, cell phones and other portable devices. I think they are trying to get the customers back that have switched from PC to portable devices. I have a feeling it will be another ME. Not really for the power user IMO.

Surprisingly, when I installed the FIRST beta of Win 8...

It was LIGHTNING FAST...I mean CRAZY FAST...and that was on
    my slower computer...

This RELEASE preview was slower then Win 7...on my NEW computer...

NOT IMPRESSED...VERY SAD....how do you end making a product WORSE right before release?

From what I've been reading, W8 has changed the way hardware interrupts are handled, resulting in better overall efficiency (read: battery life) at the expense of increased DPC latency. A lot of people are reporting 10x DPC overhead compared to Windows 7.

However, Noel's blog post on Windows 8 benchmarking tests with SONAR suggest that it's generally more efficient, reporting between 8% and 30% less CPU, 8% less RAM and up to 78% less disk than Windows 7. He thinks Windows 8 will do just fine as a DAW platform, but has reservations about Metro.

But the DPC latency is a concern, especially if there's nothing you can turn off to lower it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yes bitflipper...Win 8 is supposed to place a much more even spread
on CPU usage in Multicore processors....that is one of the big
reasons I wanted to try it...

But it's slow...and none of my hardware works with it...have been reinstalling Win 7 all day...=(

I've had to do some builds of Windows 8 for a class where I work.  I was surprised that everything worked first time on 3 different models that had to have 3 separate builds in Windows 7.

All the software we use except McAfee AntiVirus works.  We are just using Windows Defender at this time.

Boot up and shutdown times were much quicker than Windows 7.

I would not install this on my home DAW though as it's still a preview version which still means it is still not finalized.  I will wait a bit to see what happens with other users after the release version is out.   It's always a good idea before upgrading to a new OS to verify that your hardware will work with it.
