My dad's big organ

My dad has had several organs over the years, Farfisa, Yamaha, etc, and now feels it's time to change it yet again (even though he still can't play it any better than when he got it..)

He's in his mid '70s and just enjoys bashing the keys*, he's not going to be going out giging in clubs or anything, so it doesn't have to be portable. He will want a top of the range jobbie with all the (cow)bells and whistles.

But....

He came to me today in a mild state of distress as he'd been "surfing the internetz" and couldn't find anyone selling new organs.  Lots of second hand ones, but he's convinced that all the manufacturers have stopped making them.  Is this right?

To all you organ grinders out there,  what would you recomend?  Where should he be looking?  His current one has midi, are there any good, easy to use, worthwhile buying, expansion modules intended for use with organs?  (Yes I know there are millions of synths, etc and I could plug his iPad into the midi and run softsynth modules...  but this is my dad we're talking about here...)

Anyone?

*When I say bashing the keys...  he can play. He doesn't actually bash the keys with his fists (much)

    Something like this?

If so, he should be able to find a dealer in the UK.

On that site there are other links (I haven't further looked into) but he should find something decent, just not exactly what he had. Not sure but I think Farfisa and other brands are no longer in business.

Nah - if new this one but if I had the cash and space I would go for this one

But I suspect he is after something more "home organ" with rhythms and the like -  maybe a Roland AT-100. Roland seem to be the big boys in this market now.

Try this site - they have quite a range.  http://www.peterboroughorgancentre.com/

    James:
That Nord C2 looks nice, I like the design and way much cheaper compared to the Hammonds. I think the Nord also comes with a pedal board (optional)!
But if I was buying I would definitely want to try before I buy.

Oh for sure, but I guess most people won't/can't spare that much gas

If it's GAS we're talking about then I KNOW he'd want one of these...   Problem is I just told my Mom how much they cost!!!  Check out the demo...

I hear Rogers is having a big sale.

Also, and don't laugh... but I think you can actually find organ preservationist groups who are rescuing pipe organs from the thousands of small churches in the industrial belt of USA that have been abandoned for the the newer suburban TV studio-audience churches and they are sending them in crates to interested parties for the cost of shipping. That's right; pipe organs... free +shipping.

If it were me, I'd try to talk him to a fully restored B3. :-)

    best regards,
    mike

+1 re an "older" pre HS B3, the new ones are too sterile for me ...

I have an AV from the 30s (a B basically in a smaller cabinet) that kicks arse and takes names, no clone comes close, the digital B3s pale in comparison.

Do you have anything like a newspaper there with a used music column in it or possibly craigs list? There are some real finds in those sometimes.

Used may mean simply played less than 10 times. I remember seeing tons of organs for sale around my neck of the woods. Not sure what it's like there where you are. But I'll bet there are a few around.

B3,   Yes, I totally agree with everything that everyone says about them and if he was auditioning to replace Mr. Lord I'd be dragging him kicking and screaming to Hammond-UK to get one.

However,  He currently has a Yamaha EL90 which he describes as "top of the range, latest technology"  which, to be fair, it was when he bought it...  It sounds like this, (but this is not him playing it).

It does have MIDI so an option is to keep it and add a module like a Roland Integra-7 that has every sound Roland every produced all in one box,  but I just know it would all end up too complex for him to just sit down and play and I'd be round there every week explaining how to work it yet again...

Looking at the Roland range, their organs seem to start at £2500 for which you get very little, up to £25,000 for that AT-900.  But you can get realy good sound modules for way less than £1000...

    What to do..

Here's a list of Organ Manufacturers as current as it may be: http://en.wikipedia.org/w...anufacturing_companies Last time I looked it was about $40000 for the Hammond Digital B3, probably more now with price raises. Still like a synth though because I have a lot of Organ sounds (Hammond included) as well as other Orchestra sounds, just can not play them all at once. Oh, well!

Thanks Karyn... don't yu know how easily influenced I am... I didn't need to go on the internets and look at B3 organs. I can play a little piano or organ and surely do not need one but WOW... wouldn't it be COOL. Looks like about 5k will buy a rebuilt early 60s manufacture with rebuilt Leslie. Good grief.
I have a Yamaha PSR-2100, it has virtual drawbars but it ain't the same. It does have a pretty nice piano and has decent bass synths. I like it. Have you and your dad looked at the different 'workstations' Roland, Yamaha, Korg... or does he want something in a wood cabinet? I am 61, not too far behind "dad"... maybe he would like something like that.

OK, it is on the "when I win the lottery list".

I hope you and your dad find exactly what he wants.

Another option, through probably too complicated for his interests, is to consider a combination of standard keyboards/pedalboard tied into a computer running Hauptwerk.

The Hauptwerk software is designed to emulate true organ playing, via samples - stops are pulled via the use of touch screens, etc.  Many of the Cathedral church organs have been sampled, including some very famous ones in England and France (i.e. Salisbury Cathedral for one).  A number of theater pipe organs have been sampled as well.

Again, this is likely not the direction your father may wish to go, but it is a very effective way to emulate the sound of a true pipe organ minus all the actual pipework.

Anyway, just another, and different, alternative.

Thanks for the continuing input guys,  It's hard to know what my Dad actually wants other than to "upgrade".

The way I see it is there are three basic instrument catagories.

    "church" pipe organs.
"Hammond" style tone wheel organs, designed as smaller, cheaper replacements for pipe organs.
"home" organs, designed as multi-timbral instuments for the solo musician.

Even the oldest pipe organs were intended to emulate other instruments with pipe sets designed to sound like reed, string or brass instruments.
As you can prolly guess, my dad wants the home organ type.  He's a wood cabinet guy

If it were for me I would go with Hauptwerk, but you need a complete PC system to run it with screens, keyboard, mouse, midi keys, pedal board, midi controlers, etc....   He wants to just sit down, press an "on" button and assault everyones ears play away to his heart's content without worrying about booting up a computer first.

I'm going to have to take him on a trip to Peterborough Organ Centre to have a play with their stock.

You know, they have stuff for that in the Pharmacy isle...

    Pharmacy island? or pharmacy aisle?

    (hehehe....Craigb, "D-spell-check-korektor" mistyped)......

Yes, "isle."  Going into a normal store would be too pedestrian for a fred like this.

He wants to just sit down, press an "on" button and play away to his heart's content without worrying about booting up a computer first.

It seems I am not as far behind him as I first thought. Those are my sentiments exactly! I hope you have fun looking! Does he still have the Farfisa? Those are cool...

No,  that went 20+ years ago when he got his current EL-90 that he still describes as top of the range, state of the art...  Bless his heart.
