My first Attempt with Sonar X1, A Rush Cover
http://soundcloud.com/kenny-jure/la-villa This is my first Attempt at using Sonar to mix a song. It is a cover of the Song La Villa Strangato by the Band Rush. I recorded the audio files on my AW16G yamaha 16 track recorder and then took the raw audio tracks and uploaded them into Sonar. I am very pleased with the results but I'm sure there is lots of room for improvement. feed back on my recording's sound quality would be cool. Be nice about the musicianship. It was hard to play everything and get it tight.

This song is probably my favorite piece of music of all time. Especially loved the chorus guitars. Wow, who played those drums?!

Nice Job on the playing, If I was going to throw in my preference on this Id have to say- Maybe lower the HiHats & Cymbols a tad and bring up the Drums a bit. Just my pref on it though but Im also listening on my cans so I could be off LOL Great job though-Luv me some Rush!!!

Thanks again guys. Digi2ns... I had a feeling that the Hi hat and cymbals were a little hot. after I burned it to CD and played it in my truck I could tell. I was really looking for some one to tell me what I already knew Being a drummer first and foremost I find that I sometime put the drums to far out in front on my mixes. I play a lot of instruments but the drums are my love. hope to here more of your stuff Digi2ns. I love what I have listened to on your soundcloud page. great stuff. hope to here more and share more here soon. regards all kenny

Welcome to the forum Kenny. Great guitar chops the drums are spot on. Liked the drums with regard to how played and rhythm. I would maybe add a little more space to the drum mix if it were me. The drums seemed just a tad dry especially at the beginning IMHO. Noone else picked up on it so far...maybe it's just me.

This is a VERY ambitious tune to cover, and I have to say you did it well.. Chops were good, and the mix is done well... Maybe beef up those drums a little more, but all in all I think this was a great cover. Nicely done!

thanks for all the input. mgh, I can play a lot of Rush music but I have never been kicked in that area hard enough to have the vocal range as Geddy Lee. Thanks again guys

Cool version.... kudos to anyone who can pull of a Rush cover and make it sound good.... and Lee sure gets up there.... I played in a country band with a drummer who listened to RUSH just about all his waking hours. Unfortunately..... in country music, that skill set is overkill..... but that didn't stop him. The band didn't fare well as a result.

Guitarhacker, that was me also. I felt I had to fill everywhere. In the last 10 years I have had to re-learn how to just play the beat only. I find it still so hard to not break out a 2112 lighting fill. When I was alone in the studio I started putting the La Villa song together just for playing. I would mute out the drums in the mix and have at it. that's how this song came to be. enough about playing it's the mix i'm concerned with here and I feel pretty good about it for my first attempt. I might tweek it a bit later but now I'm working on my stuff. I think my next move is to upgrade to X2 Producer.
