My first Rock song in years....

Here is my newest project from my home studio.  The song is "Sorrow", and is written for someone I love who is struggling to find their way in life.

I've mixed feelings about the two instances of delay I use on the chorus. The first one sounds ok to me but the second...???

I am playing all instruments/vocals except drums. The drums are SD using Steve Slate samples
I used Slate VCC, FG-X, Mixbus.
Kush UBK is used on several channels.
Vocal buss is UAD2 EMT 140. Cooper Time Delay
Everything tracked thru ADL600 into Lynx Hilo using V700 for automation and mixing out thru Hilo

Master buss last effect is UAD2 Stereo Limiter
Mix checked with RN Digital Inspector and Voxengo Span.

All comments, suggestions welcome.

I don't know how I missed this fine song, but I'm glad I finally caught up with it.  It has a lot of good things going for it, especially the message.  It sounds huge due to your use of reverb and delay, yet everything can be well heard in the mix.  My only suggestion, and this is jmo, would be to back off the reverb on the lead vocal a bit.  That would bring the vocal closer to the listener and more intimate.  With so much depth from everything else, it would also add some texture and contrast to the mix.  That's just minor in the overall scheme of things.  Bottom line: this is a darn good song, period.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Thank you for the feedback. You are the second person to tell me that the vocal is too wet.  I plan to revisit the mix later this week when I have some time.  There simply is not enough time in the day to do everything I need to do!

    Hi, Steve,

Great song!  Really well written and performed, with excellent vocals and nice guitar work.

I agree with Lynn about maybe backing off the reverb on the vocals a bit, and my only other very minor nitpick is that the "bell" sound of the intro cymbal that carries throughout the whole song seems to get a little distracting during the vocal parts.  Maybe a slight volume or minor EQ adjustment to that particular cymbal during the vocals would tame it a little bit and keep the listening focus on the dynamite singing.  Of course that's a just a suggestion based on personal opinion, which is always subjective.

Anyway, fantastic song, Steve, I really love the vocals and the tasty guitar solo at the end, very  nice work!

    Have a good one!

cool tune. has a unique Bruce Springsteen meets a bit of Bowie w/ some Nick Cave thrown in vibe. think you could mitigate the presence of the bell ride a bit or dial it in at a lower frequency so it 'sits' within the rest of the mix better.

I plan on remixing and doing the following:

vocal needs to come down slightly and less wet
Ride cymbal needs to really be reigned in.

I really appreciate the comments as you tend to lose perspective when you do everything yourself.

Nice song. The mix sounds like a compressor is pumping a bit too much especially on the drums. Makes them sound "funny" (not haha funny). I say this because I remember when I used to do this to drums myself.

Hi Steve , your drum patterns work but the mix on the drum track is very weak
sounding in my Monitor speakers .
I used Addictive Drums myself mostly and I do sometimes use Steven Slate drums too
together with my Addictive drums to get a fatter sound .
My most recent post " Air-Repo I'm using addictive drums only , anyway your song
is hot but the mix needs a boast .
The overall sound or mix is strugglying to get out there in my ears , fix that and that
           baby will really rock .

Good song. I liked the melody and arrangement.. nice sounds except drums need some fix... ride cymbal sounds too loud  for my taste

Very nice song. Nice melody. For the mix, the voice is fine, right up front. The rest of the instruments sounds very compressed specially the bass. I will tune down the ride cymbal. I will also move the rhythm guitar to one side to give it a space. Nice guitar solo and with very good time.

Great song and great job on this, Steve!   I don't have anything to add to the above comments, I would lower the reverb on the lead as Lynn had suggested (and I'm having that same issue right now on my stuff), and yep, the cymbal issue - VERY slight -  and lower the compression on some other parts.  I can't tell more cause I'm listening with just ear buds at work, but that it sounds even THIS good with ear buds!?  HA!   Well done!!!       ~ John

Thank you all for the comments and suggestions.  I have remixed this, removed the Fairchild plug on the drums, adjusted the ride cymbals down, made vocal a bit less wet, and changed the overall mixbuss settings on the Slate FG-X.

Steve, I just listened to the new version a moment ago, and my first impression is that the vocal is either too dry or not quite loud enough.  I wonder if you might consider trying a short delay, like about an 1/8th note on a tempo based delay, mixed in about 15 to 20% just for kicks.  You have a good voice for something like this.  However, the song and arrangement is still way cool.  I think you're just a tweak or two away from a true gem.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Liked the fading intro rather than a big bang of usual electric guitars.

The vocal melody line and the vox themselves are very good.

The bell does get distracting on the kit, a few fills here and there would help too. Some of the backing instrumentation seems to just carry on the whole way through the song playing the same sound/rhythm and mixed at the same level which leaves it a little stale. Even a big single distorted guitar chord on the first note of each bar of the chorus would help the listener  to feel more of song structure.

It has a lot of potential,

    Cian

I went back in this morning and found a few things...
    1. I was using the incorrect drum map
    2. Bass compression was distorting

I  used the correct drum map and actually changed the  kit to the SSD Sizzle Kit.  The very prominent ride is gone. There are some tom fills now.
I removed the Manley Massive off the main buss.
I removed the Kush UBK from the vocal.
I adjusted the guitar and keys panning.
I added a bit more wetness to the vocal

    New version up.

    Thanks for the comments folks!

much better mix, esp the bell ride being under control. also everything sounds 'warmer' now, so that is good. well done./

my only notation would be the snare- maybe shorten the length of the decay on verb and/or gate it more as it has a bit of 80s digital feel now that i'm hearing it better.

Hmm.... not using any effects on the drums.  I did mix in some room mic ambience.
