My first incursion into the non-Apple land in years...

When we got to Las Vegas, we needed some (American) bills to be able to have a car financed and I ended up getting the cheapest possible non-smart LG phone and plan. I hated that crappy phone passionately, and used it only for emergencies. I still had my iPhone for everything else - MP3, pictures, Facebook and such.

3 years later, I finally upgraded the dreaded thing. Yesterday we went and got me one of the current cheapest options in smart phones - another LG. I wanted to have my line transferred on my old iPhone, but that wasn't an option apparently.

The phone itself has some very nice features, some of it way ahead of current iPhones (as far as I know) but form a software point of view, it's just so very weird to find myself outside of the Apple box, and to figure out what does why how, and where is everything, and having to download 3rd party software on my computer...

That and having to mess with Google (which I hate as much as some hate Apple). Android, uh?

No iTunes is kind of lame because I still own a couple of iTunes albums that I've yet to replaced with CDs. That being said, I can appreciate having the option of just dragging and dropping everything, pics, music and all, back and forth.

But I miss being able to manage everything from a computers - and there are lots of apps on there which I wish I could get rid of, but can't seem to even if I trash them. I mean games and NBA apps and Nascar and Bacon whatnot - lots of useless stuff. If you know how I can clean up some that junk, please let me know...

Much more annoying than being force-fed a U2 album, if you ask me... :P

On the plus side, I've had 4 Android OS updates on my phone and not been told my phone had to be replaced. All my friends with iPhones, have at least 2 of them. I feel the iPhone has a camera that's at the top of the heap, it's amazing. So each has its own strengths. I can't read the screen on my daughters iPhone 5 because it's so small.

Funny you mention the camera - I was just doing some testing with the LG and no matter how I set it, it's definitely nowhere near as clean as the old iPhone 4's. It's got a ton more options, but the image definitely isn't as sharp. Actually, it's shockingly similar to the resolution of the old iPhone in panoramic mode.

Android: Better navigation, auto-correction, voice commands, etc., but less "in."

I've got two friends that are currently transitioning to Androids from iPhones because of the above.

In terms of navigation, for anyone who is used to Apple (TV, computers, phones), it takes some getting used to. I'm immersed into the Apple universe for everything else all through the day, so a different set of conventions is bound to feel a bit awkward. I'm just so used to Apple's own conventions and style.

But I'll get used to it and I trust that it will feel a bit more comfortable in a while.

Auto-correction is a plague if you ask me - especially if you use more than one language in your communications. And voice command is of no use to me. Bit I can still appreciate the different strengths.

If it was an option, I'd go with iPhone every time, but that's a very personal choice, in or out. :P As a matter of fact, I'm still using my iPhone for pictures, MP3 and FB.

The voice commands they're referring to are when they use the speaker to make emails and text messages as well as entering search terms.

I'm a typer, not a talker. ;) Plus, with my stupid accent, unless it was beta-tested by other unintelligible people like Ozzy Osbourne...

iOS 9 is wonderful, I just upgraded tonight. I'm pretty much locked into the iPhone, mainly because it does everything I need a smartphone to do perfectly without any fuss. I regularly hear people touting what's better about Android but I either don't see it or it's something that I don't need (I don't use voice commands or maps, for instance).

Like Rain, I have an accent which is pretty much incompatible with voice recognition software. It gets so much wrong, even when I'm going out of my way to speak with a neutral accent. Geordies were never meant to command computers by voice apparently. When Siri came out I trialed it for a day before never touching it again. Apart from anything there's no way in a million years I would dictate emails and commands in public, just way too much of a douche factor for my tastes. In private, maybe.

They use it while on the road out here.  Non-wireless cell phone usage while driving is illegal.
