My first post. Scary.

This is my first post here ever. I'm pretty hesitant.

The tracks were from a mix contest I found a couple of years ago. I never did anything with them till now.
Constructive criticism is welcome!

Welcome!  And being hesitant never helped ANYBODY.

    It's a solid mix.
If you handed it to me, I'd send the Left Guitar to an Aux track, with a quick delay (100% wet), and pan it to the matching right side of the track, so it's wider.   maybe only half as far right as the main track is left...  Then lower the volume so that it matches what's there now, since the volume is perfect.

Then centre the bass, it's angling the track to the lower-right.

But everything else in the project is perfect!  Nice work.

    Thanks so much Matt!

I went back and forth between panning the bass center or going for a more "live" soundscape. I think I agree with you.  Same with your comments on the guitar.

Your post really gave me confidence! Thank you :-)

Thank you all for your encouragement. I'm surprised and flattered.

The raw tracks were from a mix contest that was online, which ran a few years ago. I just happened to find it and loved the song. I'll look for it and post a link.

The tracks are all dry and unprocessed which I also really liked. I wanted to go in as if it was a "real" project.

Interesting mix.  The guitars sound a tad dark to me but that's just me. I didn't think the sibilance you noted was a big issue. It makes the song sound more intimate. good job

    Sounds great. Nice job.

The vocal needs some more eqing, and a really good multiband compressor to take the edge off a hair.

I once engineered and mixed a Greek band. The best thing about that experience is I was never distracted by lyrics, since I speak not one word of Greek.

Seems like a nice balanced mix overall.

Footnote: The bass player in the Greek band was a friend. I once asked him what they say in Greece on how we say here in America "It's all Greek to me", he replied "It's all Chinese to me".

Just to "+1" the comments above, I don't think you have anything to be concerned with in regards to your mixing skills.   Sure, the song, and particularly the singer, certainly make a difference in a song like this.  But I think you've gotten everything across nicely.

Don't do much else to that vocal, it's really present, clear, and captivating!

My tiny brain was confused for a while but I started counting, I think most of your song is in 6? as in 4/6 time?

That's very cool, but I wonder if you have enough in the percussion bed to really sell people on what the timing is.

Sometimes it sounds like the time is flipping, 5 beats in one measure, 6 beats in the next. I'll give it another listen. I'm not bothered as much as intrigued.

    very nice song and mix!

    cheers,

You hear like I do Tom. One of the things that attracted me to the song was the apparent moving downbeat. I love music that can do that. A great example is the drum intro to "Rock and Roll" by Zeppelin. It starts on the AND of 3 - yet it's heard as starting on one, and having a small 3/8 bar at the end right before the guitars come in.

This wasn't on purpose. It was meant to start on the and of 3. It's just the intro to "Johnny B. Goode" played on the drums.

I love plays on timing... even when they're accidental. Get it??? ACCIDENTAL?? ACCENT?

I'm going back to sleep. ;-)

    Welcome PilotGav!

Beautiful sound! Clean and clear! very very good recording!

I agree with slugbaby about the guitar. A slight pan to the right just to get that separation between the acoustic guitar and vocals. Everything else is JUST FINE!
