My first post here, and a little nervous...

Someone posted on the Cakewalk forum a great site for practicing mixing.  http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-mtk.htm   So I tried it. After nearly two years of getting used to Sonar and countless help from forum members, I think I'm ready to put some stuff out there to be critiqued. The song is my mix of " Afraid and Alone"  by Kevin Reeves. Comment, critique, rip it apart.  Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Don, curious, I have never heard the song before. I like it, is this Kevin's tracks, or your recording of it?. I presume you got the tracks and mixed it. If so, I love the mix, well done.

Edit: ignore me, L2read description on track *bonk*

Thanks for the comments guys but don't give me too much credit.  All I did was download the raw tracks from the site in my original post and mixed them. Yes it is a great song. All the credit for the song goes to the the singer/song writer and who ever recorded it. I did learn a great deal mixing this. The original mix is posted on the website.

Thanks Fox, but it's not my music, just my mix. A real cool site in my original post has a slew of songs broken down by genre. You can preview the songs and choose to download the raw tracks via zip file. I chose this one because I really liked the feel.  If you like the song check out Kevin Reeves website.  I plan on doing a couple more of these and then start mixing my music. I hope to be done in a few months.

Judging from this mix I would say you really don't have anything to be nervous about, and the link with all the songs to download to practice mixing is great. all the mixing tips on the link are good to. Thanks for the link and the song

Nice mix Don.  It's good practice to take raw stems and mix them down.  You can come up with many ways to use all the tools in your mix engineer's toolbox and not have to worry about performance  (is that what they mean by performance anxiety??   LOL

I recently won a mixdown contest doing exactly what you did, and won a $400 mic as my prize!  So it can pay off too!!

Let us hear more.... don't be afraid to post in here.  I learn stuff all the time in here.

    Cheers!

Thanks Tony. I had a lot of fun doing it and learned a lot. It was nice using my plug ins for mixing for a change.  That's cool that you won a contest. I've seen them but never had the nerve to enter.

    Hey Don,

Do me a favor.  Sum the mix to mono and see if anything disappears.  Just curious if it's my ears or not.  I feel like there's a hole in the mix, but it could be just me and the way the mix FX hit my ears.

Other than that, good balance for the genre.  Nice.

    Cheers,

    RKS

cool song and really well mixed.

Anyone think the snare lacked a bit of "crack" or upper end?

Kson, What would I be looking for and, how would I fix it?

Whack, you would be right about the snare. It was very difficult for me mixing the drum tracks. Lots of bleed from the cymbals.  Tried gating but the cymbals were too loud. If I got the snare to sound like I wanted to , the cymbals would sound harsh.

Thanks for all of your comments,
