My first sessions with X1

Having been bitten by the X1 crashes from the initial release (where it even screwed up my 8.5.3 installation), I've deliberately stayed away from X1 until this weekend where I decided to throw caution to the wind and attempt to install it.

Fortunately, this time, everything appears to work and I've had 3 sessions with X1 and it has yet to crash.  Good sign so far.

Of course it wouldn't be Sonar if it didn't have some strange quirks , so here, in no particular order, is what I've noticed.

X1 must have installed a new version of the Project 5 Modulation plugin.  A project that I'd been working on in 8.5.3 with this plugin, now makes no sound (on the track) unless I futz with the settings.  Of course, it is now next to impossible for me to recreate that sound since the plugin doesn't appear to work the same way.

Mouse clicks occasionally stop registering in the PRV window.  I was editing the velocities for certain midi notes and have found myself wildly clicking away in the velocity lane for the click to "register".

Similar to that, during a session yesterday, the Split function refused to work , whether by using the "S" key or right clicking on the clip.  The only way I could get it to work again was to quit Sonar and restart.

I've also had some weird audio glitches yesterday where I would get a pop sound (where the output level would clip).  It's similar to what I used to get in 8.5.3 with certain plugins.  The only difference is where in 8.5.3 i would have to restart sonar, but in X1, it managed to recover.

So, so far so good, X1 (build 255) does appear to be running smoothly and doesn't appear to have crashed 8.5.3.....

when you install sonar, you have the option to install plugins and not install plugins. You should have unchecked that plugin.

Thats normal operation for digital clips (overs) Your not suppose to go over 0db in thedigital realm. its called clipping. Its bad. Keep your levels under 0dB at alll times. This sint a sonar thing. Its a digital thing. Just respect all your gain stages and you wont clip.

yes, i should have. but i would never have expected the very same plugin to act differently.

Thanks CJ, but this is not digital clipping because of levels.  This is one of the plugins causing the bus to overload.  Just hitting play in some cases would cause a level of +18dB on the track meter.  in 8.5.3, the engine would shut down instantly and not recover until i restarted sonar.  in x1, the engine at least was able to recover.

If I'm understanding you correctly, X1 now does not right click the same anywhere in the clip. You may have been in the top half of the clip where you needed to be in the bottom half.

Then again maybe I'm not understanding your particular scenario.

Actually CJ internal clipping, within the confines of Sonar is alright, the only time clipping is not alright is when you are recording into your interface 24 bit not being 24 bit and all that.  This whole clipping once the material is inside your DAW is a myth.  Of course you have more headroom at 32 bit internal processing compared to 24 bit.

When you mix, CJ is correct gain structure is one of the most important lessons that you can learn.  I regularly record quite hot (unless it's a gentle acc number) then with the trim function make sure I have some headroom for EQ and whatever. But once this is done if I am clipping internally say by up to 6db then I leave it because I know that the internal processing of 32 bit can handle it.

What the "oldies" haven't got yet is that they can mix inside the box once again as if it was analog.  I have sources if you need them, I just have to go through my huge list of favorites.  One of these days I will print out all the important stuff.  Plus go to any of my websites that my has my music and you will hear examples of my mixing technique.

Sorry CJ but we cant be propagating myths that were once true and now not.

no, i meant that the clip was selected (ie it went dark), the Now time (the little green triangle) was set and i was trying to split the clip at that point.  whether i used the "S" key or right clicked the selected clip and chose the "Split clip" option, nothing worked until I quit X1 and restarted it.  this was irrespective of where the mouse cursor was (upper half of the clip, middle of the clip, lower half of the clip).
