My gift to Sonar / Session Drummer 2 users

I have set up a page with some new resources for Session Drummer 2, including new sfz files that I have created myself for use with some free drum kits (DFH and Natural Studio). There is also a link to another free kit (GSCW) with pre-made sfz files. You can find it all here:

http://www.phildarg.com/SD2.htm

Just my way of saying “thanks” to all of the great advice and support I have received here for the past two years.

Phil

    Cool!!

You gonna make it to the user's group tomorrow night?

(...I think it's tomorrow night anyways)

If so, maybe you could show a few of us that attend how to use SD2?

Thats very nice of you Phil, I am kinda curious though, how is it possible to convert the files for use in SD2 also are they multi layered? Keep rocking

another free kit (GSCW) with pre-made sfz files

Hey...so I got the samples and the sfz files. I see how I can load an individual instrument sample to a pad and how to load a whole kit from the PAD dropdown, but that assumes it's in .kit format...which is - what?

GSCW is in 48 kHz/24 bit WAV. Once you download the free sets, just place the sfz files for the GSCW kits in the main folder for those samples.

Should work - it worked for me.

The number of layers varies depending on what samples are available in each sample kit.

The sfz files work because you're not converting the samples: the sfz files simply make reference to WAV files, which SD2 recognizes.

Aside from the resident SD2 kit samples, I am disappointed at how few 24 bit/44.1 kHz stereo drum samples are out there. Also, the DFH and some of these others do not have many layers (which is disappointing). I have created several 12 layer kits using an old drum machine. They sound great in SD2 - and I would post the kits/sfz files for others, but I am uncertain of the legalities of creating samples from another sound source.

I have the sfz files and the samples in place, but I can't find a place where you tell Session Drummer 2 to load an sfz, except for each individual pad, but the sfz files that are there for the GSCW kit are for the whole kit, not the iindividual things.

I feel like I'm overlooking the obvious.

Right lcik on each pad - choose "Load Instrument" and load the sfz file.

For the GSCW, you simply load the kit sfz file into EVERY pad - SD2 is smart enough not to duplicate samples into RAM, apparently.

Now you tell me after I split-up the GSCW sfz files for each pad. In any event,I'm glad you got that question answered, that is good to know.

Hey...thanks for the tips. Looks like that sample set loads up and I've now saved a kit file for the first set, but I think there are some teaks that need to be done somewhere, as a few of the instruments within kit 1 seem really low in level. Looked a little at the sfz files and they look simple enough, but nothing looks wacky. Have to take a look at a few of the wav files.

In case you want to do some heavy sfz editing, there's an editor here

Also, FWIW, if anyone wanted to load the entire NS7_free kit into the SFZ player, there are several alternative maps here. I played a bit with the "normal" one, and had to tweak the comment area to get it recognized by SFZ. The map will also work with SD2, though a copy would have to be loaded into each pad to get the full set (as Phil indicated above for a different kit).

You have stumbled upon an important point.

Aside from the DimPro and SD2 samples, there are very few 24 bit/44.1kHz quality drum samples, and many have serious problems with overall level. Also, very few seem to be balanced against each for relative volume.

Just makes me want to create that set of drum kit samples . . .

    Thanks Pdrag,

I dont have S6 yet (Waiting for the 'buy S6 and get S7 for free' :-)

But for those who have DKFH and dont want to rename all the sample one by one there's a little soft to help you.

    Hi Phil,

Now that I'm playing around with different setups for drums I wanted to try the NSKIT7Free set with Session Drummer 2, but it seems the download http://www.phildarg.com/NS-sfz.zip is no longer valid?
Is this on purpose (due to some legal issues) or is it something you might want to fix?

    Sincerely

Wow! I am glad to see that this thread keeps getting found - I thought it had run its course some time ago.

I had deleted some of the ZIP files to conserve space, but if there is a demand for them I will put them back up.

Also, I am looking for more GREAT SOUNDING kits/samples to use with SD2 - so if anyone has any tips, leave them here as well.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to upload the files until the end of today.

    Stay tuned,
