@Mesh... I just picked up a little Oxygen 25. I'll get an 88 key when I have more room/money. I may however end up using my old DX7 for stuff that requires a larger keyboard but it's a pig and apparently is from before MIDI was completely standardized so I gotta do some patch stuff with it. I'm excited to finally play around with all the synths I have with Sonar on a higher level than just poking at the GUI with my mouse. :-)

Good for you Beeps. Hopefully it'll work nicely with Sonar (not sure if it has an ACT preset), but Cake's Generic Surface template should work.

The leaflet is yammering on about something called DirectLink. Not sure how much extra M-Audio crap I want on my system though.

Man... why do they give you such rinky dink little cables with these things? I've got a super long USB cable hooked up to my system for my padKontrol but I read somewhere that Korg stuff likes to reside on one port and using other MIDI devices on the same port screws it up. Sooooooo lame. I guess I'd better buy some USB cables but for now I guess my DAW will have to tolerate my halitosis.

Good score, you'll like it I think.

I have an O2, I like it. If I want more keys I have a Yamaha PSR-2100. I can disable local control on it and use it as a controller, plus it has decent sounds onboard. When I bought it, it was the breakpoint between crummy sounds and too high pricing. (the cheapest one I could find that had decent bass and piano sounds). I still want a Roland A-800 controller though.

I'll admit I'm not fond of the key action but I'll get used to it. As far as the low key count I actually WANTED less keys. 1) because my desk is way too cramped and I can't keep a full keyboard set up all the time so I have to tear down at the end of each session. 2) For most people this wouldn't be a big deal but my body is mangled and handling large pieces of equipment causes injuries. 3) I wanted something small for basic chord input and simple bass/melody lines. Believe me I spent a lot of time aching over this decision. I'll get something bigger eventually but this was the right choice. I would have preferred an Axiom or Akai but those are way more expensive. Besides... I'm a guitar player.

@jbow... I actually really want learn how to use my old DX-7 properly. That thing is ancient and even though it has some pretty cheesy sounds on it it also has some really crazy cool sounds on it. I actually scored some additional data cartridges that have even more crazy stuff on them AND some of the rewritable ones that some lunatic created a bunch of sounds on. I just wish I had the room to set it up.

There is something to be said for a laptop keyboard, comfort sometimes trumps everything else... particularly as you age.

Currently my back is all twisted up just from laying down some drum tracks using my padKontrol. It is extremely frustrating especially considering I used to play REAL drums like a maniac in a thrash band. :-/

    Yeah, back pain... SUQ!

Zanaflex+neurontin+vicoprofen, klonopin and fioracet inthe afternoon and more ibuprofen as needed ... works pretty well... still hurt but managable.

Young people and those who do not have chronic pain do not understand those who do and that if it hurts bad enough and all the time one will do whatever one has to do to get it bearable.
That said, I have been on much stronger meds (90mg morphine time release daily/fentanyl patch 50mcg per hr every 48 hrs/ Butrans patch, it is junk, stay away from Butrans... all these were with 3 VP a day).
Most recently the Dr. put me on Nucynta ER 150 2x per day. I didn't like it, I culdn't sleep at night. So, I had gone down (on my own) to one Nucynta a day, still in pain, took them to the Dr. last week and told them I was through with it. Dr. was in Paris, the PA gave me 3x vico a day and the Neurontin 300mg at bedtime... For several years leading up to last January I had just been taking 5 vicoprofen a day + the fioricet and klonopin and was doing OK'ish but I thought it was losing it's effectiveness, thought I needed a change... BAD MOVE! Let Me Tell You... I have learned to leave well enough alone. When I finally got off the Nucynta I felt like I had come out from under a blanket.
I guess I will see what the Dr. has to say when I see him next month. He has been absolutely intent, ever since the change in January on my taking an ER formulation (extended release) with NO breakthrough meds... that has never, ever worked for me.
All of this is all an absolute nightmare because of both the pain and the dependancy issues, if something isn't working well, there is ALWAYS the fear of what change they will make, will it work, will the dosage be enough or too much, will there be weird side effects. I am going to do my best to go back to the 5x VP daily. Then I can take less if I hurt less and have more for the bad days. I HATE having something in my system 24x7 whether I need it or not... and FWIW, I have, in ten years, never run out of meds. What I once abused, I now use... life is crazy sometimes but it don't have to hurt.

Oh, and I went through the physical therapy and epidurals years ago. I have degenerative disk disease and arthritis in the spine mostly arount T-1. If I take an epidural shot I break out with excema for three weeks and have about three days of relief sandwiched in the middle.

I think you are maybe still a little younger, (I am 60yo now). Take good care of yourself. Especially good care of your feet, back, and neck because if they hurt, you are rurnt (rurnt: a word for Steve, lol).

Anyway, I truly hope you feel better and you take care not to continue to aggrivate what may already be a problem. Sometimes a chiropractor can help... I like you and do not want you to hurt. You are, IMO, one of the "good guys".

    Take care!

That sucks, jbow. I'm actually in my 30s. I found out too late that I have a condition that leaves me vulnerable to nasty injuries and worked my body WAY too hard when I was younger. I lost everything because of it. Stupid doctors ignored my complaints when I first started showing signs. As far as drugs I'm now prescribed pretty much whatever I want but I hate taking pills so mostly I use ice and a heating pad which helps but I'm on the damned things most of the day. I do take ibuprofin and percs but WAY below the prescribed dosages and when things get really stupid I use some heavy duty muscle relaxers. I slipped a disc years ago and slooooowly worked my way back into being semi mobile again but then a few years ago it slipped ago and screwed up my legs. It is very frustrating because I was a very active and strong willed person now I'm stuck on my ass watching life pass me by. Music is the only thing keeping me sane (well... at least not koo koo wocka wocka smear poop on the wall crazy). If I had more money I'd go into hardcore rehabilitation to see if I can fix it but I don't so here I am. Anyway thanks for the kind words. You're pretty cool yerself. Cheers!

on a serious note: I completely agree, doctors are stupid (99%). I suggest reading two books Healing Back Pain - Mind Body Connection by Dr.Sarno
and Trigger Points Massage Therapy. Both are cheap on Amazon. I had back pain as well, now it's gone thanks to knowledge in those books.

I have an Akai MPK Mini for much the same reason, limited space, and it works fine. I'm not a keyboard player so it's not as if I'm playing two handed parts or anything - like you, just inputting chords and baselines etc. although I am looking towards getting a full size keyboard and learning to play properly. For that reason I'm putting shelves up behind my desk with the lowest shelf low enough to put my monitors on, with just enough space to slide the keyboard underneath to keep it when I'm not playing. Would love to find some kind of under-desk sliding tray big enough for a keyboard, so I can slide it out when needed (oo-er).
