My new Mic

Hay the wife got me this sweet ribbon mic for my birthday.

I am only a small home studio and just record local artist and myself when I feel the need.
That said, some of my gear Is not "pro" quallity, but it makes me try harded for that sweet sound
or clean lack of sound maybe I should say.
Ok, OK, the mic already.

Its an Apex 210 (heres a few links)

I will be testing it more today (nov.19/07) but for my initial plug it in and talk a few test samples (test, test, 1, 2, 3, lift, this is my ne....) It was as real and clear as if I was listening to myself speak (hmmm maybe I was)

Well I think it was a darn great gift and you guys are more then welcome to praise it or beat it up.

Off to play with my new gear

Brad

Congrats man! The pic looks cool. What are you planning to record with it? ie: vox, acoustic, etc.

I've been thinking of getting a ribbon but I understand they need a preamp with lots of clean gain. What preamp do you use ? Does it seem to be enough ?

    Thanks Guys;
I think i will use it for vocals, it seems to add a nice feel to my vox, I'm not sure what or why yet
just that it sounds good with the short minor test that I have done so far.
For a pre all I use is the level on my motu 828mkll
This mic says not to ever let is get power and It has a safty in the cord.
I have a lot of digital plug-ins and I could always clone the track if I need to.
I would hate to have to record to tape and get it right the first time.
I normally twist and squeeze and morph the tracks untill I get the sound that I want and then
I can run it to the tape with the filters and limiter mastering it on the way.

I recently bought a Fat Head ribbon mike from Cascade (about $150). I run it through a simple little ART Tube pre, using the 20 db boost. The resulting levels are fine, essentially what I get from my SM57 at the same settings (to give a benchmark for comparison). Playing aggressively, in fact, can clip the signal, proving one doesn't need to max the gains for good levels.

The sound from this set-up is very clean even at high gain levels. I'm currently using the Fat Head to record a 'cello, and as I hoped the result is very smooth and velvety -- pretty much exactly what one hopes for from a ribbon mike.

Cascade offers a Rode boost module to attach to the mike, but I skipped that. I suspect Boost 11 accomplishes much the same thing but without printing the added boost.

I have a Apex 210 and use it mostly on guitar amps (rock) and brass. It will take pretty high SPL's. Frank, I use it with my Grace 201, and there's plenty of gain. The MOTU built in preamp might not be enough for soft instruments like acoustic nylon guitar or softly-played flute, but the overall tone has been very pleasing. I used it in conjunction with a 414 TLII (set the 414 on figure 8 to match the pattern of the 210) on a brass section set up around the 2 mics and was very pleased with the sound. The client chose the tracks done with the 210 over the AKG.

    I am curious.

Does anyone here record into a DAW (I use sonar 6) like I do.

Also when I record and it is a low db my wave is very small but I can
just high light it and click normalize and to what db I want it normalized to.

wha-la the wave is as if it was recorded at a higher db.

Now why would I worry about a pre amp if I can just enlarge the natural sound?
    or am I missing something?

I know, I know, that a clean recording at the proper level is better then a processed level,
but guys, with the technology now a days, does it really matter.

I am not trying to be a smart ass but am honestly asking your thoughts.

    Thanks. *****Brad*****

Normalizing adds distortion to your source file and typically increases the amount of "noise". A sound recorded softly and then normalized will sound different than the same sound recorded hotter in the first place.
