"Sean Michael Ogden has severe burns and lost his teeth, but is in a stable condition in the Mercy Regional Medical Center," fire marshal Tom Kaufman told reporters in Durango, Colorado. "Frankly, it's a miracle that he's still alive. Fireworks can be lethal if you try to alter them, and it's extremely dangerous to attempt it unless you're properly trained. Mr Ogden had no training and no sense, and that's where the problem lay.
 
"It seems that he purchased several dozen small fireworks from a shop in Durango Mall. But when he got them back to his home on the Animas View Drive trailer park, he decided they were too small. So he looked on the internet to see how smaller fireworks could be altered to make big ones, and decided to try it for himself.
 
"For reasons that we still do not fully understand, he began by removing his shirt, and emptying the contents of several fireworks into an electric coffee grinder, presumably to mix them together. Then he switched the grinder on. The resulting explosion was so violent that it blew his teeth clean out, destroyed his trailer, shook the house of a woman living a quarter-mile away, damaged a telephone kiosk, and sent a plume of smoke so high into the air that it could be seen for miles. Local residents thought there had been a terrorist incident.
 
"We assume that a spark from the electric grinder must have ignited the mixture, and are amazed that Mr Ogden could not foresee this."
