My projects are toast and Platinum is unusable. (open case 326713) RESOLVED
I've had more than 5 projects so far that won't open anymore. One of which was not created on my PC. It is a friends project who also uses Platinum so it's strange that his did the same thing. I haven't installed any new software or anything like that. All I get is the blank Sonar screen that you see just after you see the line move across in the transport window and just before the project is supposed open. I can click with the mouse all over that screen and can't even get it to white out. It's as if the screen is behind glass and I'm clicking on the glass. No drive activity indicating it's loading just a blank screen that you can only close from the task manager. This is a big problem because all I was doing in these projects was either sending a track out to my preamp and compressor and recording it back into Sonar or just recording the normal way. The projects works fine. When I went to open them they wouldn't. At this point I don't have to record or anything in the project I click to open it and hope for the best. For now I made copies of all my other projects just in case. Luckily I have a backup of these projects but I lost the progress. I tried opening the projects in safe mode to no avail. I don't know what could cause such a thing. Never had this happen before. There is no way to recover the projects once they fail. At least I don't know of a way. I am assuming it's the CWP file that gets corrupted somehow. I can play all the audio tracks in the projects audio folder fine with Windows Media player. Noel recommended creating a Google Drive account and upload my project there which I've done. I am not sure how to give access to the project though. Please advise.I cannot use Platinum. Even projects that I haven't opened for months fail. I un-installed and removed all the related directories etc. and re-installed Sonar to no avail. I also uninstalled my audio interface software and hardware to see if it could be causing something. I still cannot open those projects and projects continue to fail. I don't know what to do at this point. Lord knows when Someone at Cake will contact me. all suggestions are welcome.

Have you tried opening these projects in Safe mode. (Hold down shift)
You have run virus and malware checks as well?

When you're at Task Manager about to close SONAR, can you instead right-click on it and generate a minidump? If so, that could be useful to the bakers to see what's happening at the point it fails.

How are you opening the projects? - double-click project file - via File menu - from the Start Screen When you start Sonar, does everything appear normal up to the point of attempting to open a project? Are you able to access Prefs and other menu items? Are you able to open up Plug-in manager? I'm asking this to see if there are other symptoms you can identify prior to opening a project. Having ALL projects fail to load tells me it's not a project file problem. Any disk errors for your project drive (or others) showing up in showing up in Event logs?

I normally open my projects via start menu. I have tried opening projects by clicking the cwp and file menu. Sonar starts up fine, I can access all the preferences, plugin manager, control surface. etc. So far none of those things seem to be affected. I can create new projects and open a few projects that have not failed yet but I fear they will at some point so I don't want to open any projects I need. What I am doing is using a backup of a couple of projects to test this problem. When the project fails to open I just delete it and use the backup again. It doesn't even matter if I record a track or just open and close or open save and close etc. This issue seems random. The one thing that is perplexing as well is my buddy gave me a copy of his project created on his pc with Platinum and when I opened it for the first time on my pc it failed to open. Today I'm going to create a new project, record a few tracks and see what happens. I just installed my new interface which I know has nothing to do with this issue because the issue started when I was using my Saffire. Beside the problem still occurred even with no interface or drivers installed. I did check the even logs for errors that may give a clue but no errors.

Cool, I'm glad that worked for you. I debug minidumps at work on occasion, and while I'm no expert at the process and I don't always find something useful, more often that not it is beneficial. Hopefully the bakers can identify a root cause!

Maybe try renaming AUD.INI; SONAR will build a new default one from scratch when it starts. If it has no effect, you can restore the old one. If it fixes anything, compare the two files. C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum\AUD.INI

Always a good first step in troubleshooting. If a brand-new project fails the same way, assuming you're not using a project template that preloads a bunch of plugins, then it's safe to assume the problem lies outside your DAW. Try bypassing your audio interface and enabling your computer's onboard interface. Switch your driver to MME. If everything works with that setup, it could indicate a failing USB or Firewire port.

The only thing I didn't do was delete the reg entries. I didn't want to re-install all my 3rd party plugins.

FWIW, deleting the registry entries in the clean install instructions does not affect any plug-ins even the ones bundled with SONAR. It only cleans out the entries relevant to setting up SONAR.

This is what I'm doing now. I created a new blank project and one from the default template and want to see if either fails. No plugin involved. As far as my pc hardware I haven't had any issues at all but we'll have take it a step at a time.

I found what was causing the problem. Thank god all my projects are fine. I'm sure the Bakers will be glad not to have this in their queue. My buddy took a couple of my projects that won't open and opened them on his pc, also Sonar Platinum. That led to look harder for the cause It turns out my Faderport is preventing projects to open. I noticed instead of the Faderport showing Active it shows a track number which changes depending on the project I open or try to open. It hangs the project. I don't know why is shows a track number now instead of active. I uninstalled it completely and re-installed but now it keeps showing a track number. In the new project I created I can see it change when I click on different tracks. I hope you guys can help me figure this out because I love the Faderport and would hate to have to put it in a drawer. Please help. I went through the same steps (instruction) for Sonar install so I did nothing different.

I am back in business and thanks for all your helpful suggestions. I uninstalled the Faderport and installed AZController. It seems to like AZ now where it didn't when I first got the Faderport but it likes it now and that's just fine with me. I don't know why using the Faderport DLL shows a track number instead of active like AZ but maybe someone will figure it out at some point. Thanks for all your assistance. Just think if we didn't have this forum where we would be. Probably not using Sonar.

It would be good to know where it is hanging. If you can capture a dump when its in a hung state it may help us prevent it. Follow the instructions in the sticky for how to capture a dump froa hung application. If you get a dump attach it to your case and post the case number here.

Noel Borthwick [Cakewalk] It would be good to know where it is hanging. If you can capture a dump when its in a hung state it may help us prevent it. Follow the instructions in the sticky for how to capture a dump froa hung application. If you get a dump attach it to your case and post the case number here.
Thanks Noel. Here is the case number case 326713 Here is the link to the dump file. It is a 1.2gb file so once you download it please let me know so I can delete it from my dropbox to free up space. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rdqcn3sp815a5o9/SONARPLT.DMP?dl=0
