My quest to find a decent pair of pants

I posted a rant some time ago about my inability to find stores that sell decent pairs of pants that aren't this ridiculous skinny/slim fit crap. Well, I've pretty much given up on regular clothing stores and have realized that the pants I want are actually sold by outdoor clothing stores. I want pants that are rugged, durable, light, comfortable, have a good line about them and are also cool enough for an urban setting.

In the end I found these and ended up buying 3 pairs for the summer...they're thin and light enough for hot humid days, but rugged enough to withstand anything. Really comfortable & the cut is quite flattering (in my opinion anyway). I think they may well end up being my favorite pants ever. Plus they're on sale.

Actually, I've observed just the opposite ... at least with generic blue jeans.  The numbers of big waist items kept on hand have ballooned (no pun intended) compared to what you'd typically find a few decades ago.  The obesity epidemic has come to The Gap!  I usually like to buy four pairs at a time (I hate shopping for clothes and this way I only need to shop for them every other year or so).  That used to be easy, but now it's hard to find four pairs in my size because the so much of the shelf space is devoted to plus sizes.

I noticed the slim/ skinny pants epidemic the last time I visited NY back in March.  Every department store that I went into had racks of them.  You have to be careful when buying Under Armor shirts as well.  I like that dry cloth that's out now, especially for the Texas weather.  I am not, however a "Fitted" body style.   Regular is fine, but fitted on me should be against the law.

I think both issues are valid. That means that if you're not overweight but you don't like to look like a 14 years old effeminate boy or a very masculine girl, or Joey Ramone, you may have trouble finding pants.

Even the more traditional stuff that I used to wear has been infected by that trend - waist get lower and lower and legs get tighter and tighter. Personally I like old school suit pants or cargo pants. You know, man clothes... But they've become increasingly hard to find in my size - not counting the fact that I have a pretty non-conventional profile.

As much as I hate that place, and much to my surprise, I finally managed to find jeans, cargo pants and training pants at WalMart. It's probably the last place I'd want to support, but the other stores have all failed me. Other than that, there's this little place in NY where I bought a couple of my suits - they had the more conventional type of clothes that I like. But bigger stores are usually a lost cause.

I'm another who's mystified by the "skinny pants" syndrome.  They aren't even pants anymore...as in the girls slacks...they are "leggings".  You might as well be wearing tights.

And another thing while I'm in rant mode...what is with men wearing so-called suits that are made to look two sizes too small??  It looks like hand-me-down clothes...only IN REVERSE!

Sometimes I can't even tell if a pant is skinny fit until I try them on...they look kinda normal until you try and push a leg through and it gets stuck.

He, he...... yeah, there seems to be a lot of that about. Reminds me of the end of  the school year when kids had outgrown their clothes, but parents wouldn't buy them new ones until after the summer break because it was too near the end of year and they always waited to buy when school restarted again, so they hadn't outgrown them already in the summer.

I'm 6' 4" and 240 lbs., but my jeans are 34 waist and 34 inseam.  Gee, that doesn't sound like it should be hard to find, but I recently was given a gift card to Sears and went to buy two new pairs.  I finally found two (Levi's 501's), but had to settle for one of the "normal" color and one of the slightly darker blue because those were the ONLY two pairs in my size...  *Sigh*

    Why? You live in NYC.

BTW, I live outdoors so all my stores are outdoors stores.

I found some perfect pants...in the back of my closet.

Dropped 30 pounds and all my old pants (button fly 501, dockers, slates, etc. etc.) all fit like a glove.

I know the feeling.  I am 6'4" and 230 pounds.  36 waist is just a little tight and 38 is way to lose.  I guess I need to loose about 10 lbs and get back into the 36 waist comfortably.  You would think that jeans that size would be easy to find, but the "choices" are often very limited on styles and colors.  These days if I am out shopping with my wife, If I see something my size that I like, I almost always grab it.

I don't shop.  When I've tried, I tend to come home with neon chamo overalls, a sequined unitard, porcupine quill jacket (with detachable hood featuring the porcupine's head), winged boots, and a t-shirt with a large arrow pointing up and the words, "I'm with Stupid".

In the end, I have to go back to the store and return everything.  The Customer Service person usually starts to ask why I'm returning these items, takes a better look at them, and then decides the answer is obvious.

I haven't shopped for jeans in some time (maybe a few years), but I do like the carpenter style jeans as they're not tight, not too loose, not really baggy, but matches my blue suede shoes.

Back when I was in decent shape (up until about 5 years ago) I was always 34 waist, 32 inseam.  Now since I've developed dunlaps syndrome (i.e. my belly has done lapped over my belt) I'm 36 waist (and probably should be wearing 38s) and 30 inseam.  Maybe if I adopted the hip hop style I could even get by with like a 26 inseam.  But waddling isn't my thing.
