My recording room photos
Taking the time to set up my basement / bedroom recording room. When we moved in a little less than a year ago I just plopped everything into the room and started recording ... but I recently bought a couple of new mic's and desk so, I am taking some time to rearrange things. I am going to continue recording but the room needs quite abit of work. 60's era Ludwig kit with a modern DW snare and my new M160 mic's as overheads: Another angle showing the issue I have with the soffit: A shipping blanket tent held up by an old Gibraltar rack system. The bass drum has an SM57 built into it with a May microphone mounting system system and that is an RE20 on the stand. I've thinned out most of my gear and the only thing I have left in the rack for recording is my Delta 1010, a '90's era 2 channel Art pre with premium tubes a headphone amp and a 14 channel Mackie board (I had been using my Mackie 16 channel board but I took it out for gigging purposes). I put together a new "cherry" desk a couple of weeks ago. My KRKs are on custom built stands (if I new better, I would have just used concrete plant stands ;-)). The Tanoys have been refurbished but I have not been able to figure out a place to put them. The lunch box has 3 pre's in it ... if you look closely at the 2 Grace pre's, the logos are flipped ... it was unintended on their part but now they have lots of face plates with the logos 180 degrees out of phase. A Presonus monitor system and a Studio Cat.

Now, you see, if that was pics of my setup... the book on the speaker on the foreground would be a playboy. (Nice setup - interesting way to tame the kick). I am somewhat surprised that you have no treatment on the wall in front of the kit. Do you not get a lot of "room"?

I am somewhat surprised that you have no treatment on the wall in front of the kit. When I first set up in the room a year ago, the kit was in the corner facing the desk and ½ wall of studio foam mounted on Masonite (that is what’s behind the desk and that originally came from a “ClearSonic” drum room system). My thought now is to fill the corners with Auralex bass traps (I am in the process of doing just that but they are close to 40 bucks each … so, I am buying one at a time) and then possibly another shipping blanket on the wall. My wife has a collection of very large Amish quilts … and I may go that route … as I am sure she will be thrilled when I tell her why I want one of her quilts.

Very nice Dave! I'm sure the acoustics will improve drastically once those traps are put in place. @Rain: Since I just moved to Fl., my 4 bedroom house in Vegas is looking for a caring tenant.

Just pad that soffet with some 2" foam pyrimids or bass traps. Looks like a low ceiling, you should hang a cloud over the center.

Tell me about the shipping blanket over the bassdrum. Does it prevent beelding noise to the other mics? Or does it have an acoustic function.

Tell me about the shipping blanket over the bassdrum. Does it prevent beelding noise to the other mics? Or does it have an acoustic function. I use it just to provide some (modest) isolation for the bass drum mic. The objective is to create a tunnel or tent so the mic picks up the tone of the drum from the front resonant head without any additional damping. Obviously, it will affect (or muffle for the lack of a better term technical term) what the overhead and/or room mic’s pick up, so you will have to experiment. Probably no need if you have a great sounding room but it is an option and it works for me. I have a pile of Gibraltar drum rack hardware so it was easy for me to build a square-ish framework for the blanket, but a couple of mic stands or a chair is really all you need if you wanted to experiment. Also, wrt a blanket, there are different approaches, you can create a tent and close off the end like I do ... or a tunnel so the end is open allowing some isolation for the bass drum mic and less “muffling” for the overheads / room mics (something like a tubular concrete form lined with a blanket). Another approach that I have only read about and not tried is to use hard surface materials like wood to create a reflective mic isolation enclosure for the mic in front of the bass drum. NOTE - don't allow the blanket to unintentionally contact the resonant bass drum head ... it is just for isolation of the mic and not damping.

I'm jealous of your R-92. The AEA mic is really nice (on almost anything) but you do need a high gain pre for it … that is why I have the Grace M501 pre’s … I originally acquired one of them along with the Lunch Box specifically for that mic. The Grace has a Ribbon mic setting and provides a lot of clean gain (AEA has since introduced a 500 series ribbon pre). There are two Grace M501 pre’s because I recently acquired two Beyerdynamic M160 Ribbons for use as overheads. As a side benefit, I have the world’s worst singing voice and the AEA makes it bearable for me to listen to my own voice over and over again.

Just to add a little to the shipping blanket tent in front of the bass drum topic … Another technique that is much more common is to add a second bass drum with resonant heads on both sides and then mic the second bass drum … I see this quite often at high profile concerts. The objective of this approach is different in that it isn’t to isolate the microphone but to capture the tone of a sympathetically resonating bass drum. I am bringing up this seemingly unrelated technique only to do some shameless self-promotion. I have the patent on the technique of adding a second shell but using only one bass drum head. If you navigate to the bottom of the page in this link and go to “IMAGES” there is a drawing with the idea applied to a floor tom. http://patft.uspto.gov/ne...imembrane+AND+carlson)
