My rockstar daughter

Her school runs a MADD* competition.

Gaby is learning guitar and has reached the point where she's starting to write her own material.
Last year (as a year 9) she entered singing/playing a cover (Our Song, Taylor Swift) and came 3rd to two year 10s.

This year she entered two of her own compositions and walked away with 1st AND 2nd.

I'm so proud

All I have to do now is work out how to get her to record them properly

    Karyn....

from looking at the gear you have, it seems you have all the stuff needed right there.

If you need some help with tracks on instruments, well....... I think you're in the right place for that as well.

Post the song on your soundclick site, and ask people to listen and see who wants to help. Choose a few people to assist with creating tracks and have them email the tracks to you and put it together...then get your daughter to sing it in your studio to the tracks.

Just a hint.... create a track.... if it's just a click track and guitar or piano w/vocal with 2 measures count in and prominant click/timing track for the others to follow. post that as well and make IT downloadable so people can put it into their DAW and record tracks for it.  Don't forget to tell us what the BPM of the project is....

    just my 2 cents....

BTW: congrats to your daughter... and so it begins....

I have one of her songs fully tracked, arranged, produced and cowbelled but it's waiting for her to get off her lazy teenage arse and finish singing TWO LINES,  just TWO STOOPID LINES so it can be mixed and published!!!

Well.... yeah.....duhhh... it went right over my head, which is not an uncommon thing to have happen these days.

Having 2 teenage daughters and trying to find ways to motivate them to do what I want has resulted in the following observations and lessons learned.

Whips and scourgings don't tend to produce good results. Especially when trying to get them to cut the grass, wash the cars, clean up their rooms, pick up clothes left around the house, wash towels, feed the dog....... you get the idea.....

Taking the car keys, taking the laptops, taking the cell phones, worked once or twice, but has failed to achieve any quantifiable results in recent years.

What I did find that worked just yesterday, to get my daughter to ride with me on a short trip to pick up a few things from the store...... an offer to stop at Starbucks for her favorite drink.

best of luck in motivating your daughter to finish the 2 lines in the song.  Let me know what works so I can try that on my 2 next time I need to motivate them.

Having survived 3 teenagers, I may be able to offer a suggestion for motivating her- Take her cell phone and any other texting device away, and explain it will be returned upon completion of the work.  This may work, or perhaps result in her burning down the house.... hopefully the former.

I suppose you can confiscate her Becan ......
Remember when we were teens??? .... You really can't force them to do anything, just let it go and in her time she will choose to finish it or decide to scrap it and perhaps do it over again.   If you push her to finish it, it could be detrimental to future projects.

Hi Karyn, many congatulations to your daughter - you must be so proud.

And writing her own stuff as well, that's absolutely fantastic.

My little girl (12) has just started taking guitar lessons and she's loving it. I've tried showing her stuff but as I'm self-taught, I think she'll get on much better learning properly, especially as she's learning music in tandem with the instrument.

I'd have the answer to the mobile phone thing, if only I could bottle up my son's attitude to them. Although he's a teenager (14), half the time he has no idea where his phone is, and when he does have it, it's never turned on!

    Go Gaby

I don't know if I can help with this.  I have sons, you see.  I just wait.  My wife "motivates" them and they do whatever it takes to have peace again and, hopefully, regain their sense of hearing.  As Quickly As Possible.  Guys are easier that way.

I just stay out of the way until they've apologized and made sufficient restitution to make the environment safe for occupancy.  Failing that, I take her side.  I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid.

    Yeah,  my bad.
Her real name is Gabriel. Pronounced Gay-bree-el. The traditional female spelling Gabrielle (Gab-re-elle)just seemed too french...

She's either Ga-bee or Gay-bee, and she is excessively talkative.

Hmm...  How to get a teenager to do something, eh?   Well, try this:

"Gaby, you can do whatever you'd like, but whatever you do, don't finish recording your song.  Really, do anything you'd like, but don't finish recording your song..."

I'd give it no more than an hour and the song will be finished.

I don't have any useful advice, I'm afraid...my kids are only 4 & 9... And I can barely get them to LOOK at me when I'm talking, much less do as I SAY... So... But, I'd love to hear it if you do manage to convince her. Truly great and congratulations to her! And Mom!

This one always worked for me when I was  kid. Unfortunately it took the joy out of it though, and shes a little past that stage.

If she is really into the song she should come round' because its her creation!

    Cool beans!
Off-handedly mention to her that you sang the last two lines and released the song.
