My son's 1st post :-)

He's 9, we did this one today. It's the cover with him mixed up in there.

He's going to do it at his school talent show

It's at the top, called "Payphone"

:-) He likes the way it came out, Thanks Lynn! And I got to show him something about the recording process, comping, effects, envelopes :-) So I think he really got something out of it.

I'm just so proud of him and glad that he's interested in music. I've always exposed him to it, but "tried not to push." Because if you push, "they'll pull..." He said out of the blue that he's doing a song (singing) in the talent show at his school (4th grade) and I said that's really cool! And he said yeah, maybe I could do it in your studio?  So it was really cool because he's seen me in there, and knows what it's about.

But I was able to comp his takes, and show him how I selected different parts, and which ones were good, and which ones were not, and why. And how I used envelopes, and FX. I kept him interested "for part of it."  Which is is hard when you're 9. I think the bow and arrow today was a lot more interesting for him! We do that, and throw knives, shoot the BB gun (Red Ryder - YOU'LL PUT YOUR EYE OUT! Yeah that one) And he's a blue belt in Taido (Japanese Karate) So they're going to call him "sir..." LOL! He actually has a really sweet disposition (unlike his old man, I guess he takes after his mother, err um, perhaps a distant relative in that respect?) I wish I'd have had him when I was younger, it's hard to keep up. But he's my reason for being.

Again, I am just so happy that he's interested in music. It requires both talent, and practice/patience. Some people just can't and never will be musicians or singers. Others have the natural ability, but may lack the patience and the passion to work at it.

What we do is actually quite rare and special. We are all very special compared to the masses...

This is excellent, I like your sons vocals and even though I wasn't listening to this track on my monitors.  The mix sounded pretty nice.  Good work.

This reminds me of my nephew who is in the Philadelphia boys choir. When they are at this age they have pipes that will go away when the voice changes. A great opportunity to use those highs while he has them still.
The song is well done. Great for his first tune. I can hear his vocal being a little more prominent in the mix but I'm sure this will come with time, a very minor nit to a  great job.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing.  I can relate. :-) I have twin boy/girl nine year old kids and have taken the same approach.

They both _love_ music as much as me and we jam in my studio. My son is a natural drummer, and my daughter can sing like an angel. I'd like to get them both lessons to shore up their foundations, but I worry about taking the fun out of it. My son has played with the band during sound checks and I got my daughter to sing at the local Relay For Life event this past summer with about 600 people wandering around and my band backing her on a Katy Perry tune - the kids came out of the woodwork; literally like she was a celebrity! It was pretty wild. I've been trying to get them into the idea of doing the 4th grade talent show together, but they seem set on doing their own shows. So much for the Donny & Marie dream ... LOL!

Heck, my son shows me stuff about recording and I taught him initially. It's a blessing to be able to teach them but it's a bigger blessing when they surpass us, IMHO.

Its the music for the song without words so your son can sing and you can mix him and he will sound professional at his school concert. No viruses. I'm sorry I'll attach the song? Maybe I'll put it on soundcloud for you. Maybe he doesn't need it, but he will get the experience of singing to a real recording like a pro. It will sound  great. Kinda like karaoke? There's no evil intent here.

Oh don't let "New Member" fool you too much. I've been engineering for many years.

:-) Streaming's the way to go bro, if you have a version of this tune w/no vox? That would be great! :-D

I'd be glad to download it?

He surprised me when he did it? No words, just singing along w/the cover, so he has it down.
