My third ballad - a bit sappy - I admit. "Let's Stay Together." (new mix)
This is the third of the ballads I am doing. I originally planned to do six of these for an EP - but I'm enjoying doing these so much, I might just end up doing 10. I believe this tune was written by Ella Fitzgerald - the version I'm most familiar with was recorded by Al Green.. Rhythm guitar - Paul Reed Smith Lead guitar - Gibson ES335 Thanks in advance for taking the time to listen. http://www.soundclick.com/html5/v3/player.cfm?type=single&songid=13548627&q=hi&newref=1

Nicely done as always Mark, though I am hearing the odd little moments of distortion, just tiny like bits like you just tipped over the edge, could of course just be the conversion to mp3.

Pretty sure Al Green wrote the song Mark. That aside, this is just beautiful. For me, the best one yet of these ballads. Really fine playing, so expressive.

Daryl - thanks so much - I'm working on the next one now - Misty. Jamesg - I do like working on these - these have turned out to be more difficult to do than I thought. You're right, it was Al Green, not sure why I thought Ella wrote this one. Thanks for taking the time.

Mark, Nice one... Enjoyed it very much. The only recommendation I would have on any of these type of songs is to maybe use a different EQ, reverb or something to make the guitars sound a little more different (like two players rather than overdub of the same guitar) Playing is outstanding and on second listen of it now:) Huge thumbs up....

Great suggestion! Some way of adding some separation to the two guitars. Dan

Mark and Dan, that was the same comment I got the last ballad I did. On that one I used the 335 for both tracks. So, I changed it up on this one - used the PRS for the background guitar and the 335 for the lead. I guess it didn't work. I'll have to work on it. I'll post another version later. Thanks for the comments.

eph - thanks man - Holiday Inn in Saigon - that works - appreciate the comment. synkroton - I appreciate the though - I'm not used to doing songs like this - I did about fifty tunes with Warren Willingham that were rock and blues tunes. I've got a new version up - I went back and looked at my project file and for some reason I mixed a version and posted it here that didn't have any effects - no eq, nothing. I hope this is better. Thanks all.

I wish I was so versatile...
Listening again. Is this the new mix? My ears are crap... The "backing" guitar sounds a touch "closer..."
Do both guitars go through the same reverb?
Nice to listen again anyway... Should be a sleepin' though... Nearly 2:00 am here in the UK!!

I'll be honest... I could listen to this on a beat up sixties transistor radio... It's the playing that sounds so good here. That's not to take away from your mix, of course, I'm not really qualified to comment on that aspect , except that it sounds totally fine to my ears. cheers andy

On yeah... it has a similar vibe to the others so sounds like part of a "set", but on its own it simply sounds great. FWIW I'm definitely getting a different feel from the two guitars. The only odd thing for me mix-wise is how dry the rhythm guitar is, especially against that sweet reverb drenched lead. Maybe just a spot of room verb? Oh... and I loved those octaves towards the end.

Mr. Clinus, very nice guitar indeed when I close my eyes and listen I am transported to a late night in September on the veranda of a seaside club with a gin and tonic the girl I love the soft breeze whispering the waves gently rolling in and you playing this song she mentions to me that she has heard this before but not quite sure where I tell her the only thing more beautiful than this rendition is the woman sitting beside me she nuzzles into my neck and gently kisses me this song becomes our song Thanks dude Jesse Q. "Let's Stay Together" is a song by American singer Al Green from his 1972 album of the same name. It was produced and recorded by Willie Mitchell, and mixed by Mitchell and Terry Manning. Released as a single in 1971, "Let's Stay Together" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained on the chart for 16 weeks and also topped Billboard's R&B chart for nine weeks. Billboard ranked it as the number 11 song of 1972.

I hear popping too. I could stomach just the lead guitar with a shaker to keep me in rather than the R. Guitar. I found the R. Guitar distracting but the lead to be superb.

As usual, Mark, your playing is subtle and your tone is beautiful. But I gotta say that the rhythm guitar spoiled this for me -- it wasn't "rhythmic" in the sense that it doesn't really support your guitar -- it sounds meandering and unsure. I kept wanting to hear a solid chord structure with more of an r&b feel. Allan =-=-=

Thanks for taking the time Abull. First - this isn't R&B - and that's not what I was shooting for - but I do understand what you mean - I did think about trying to be more rhythmic with this - but the only way I thought that was possible was to use an acoustic guitar for the rhythm - unfortunately - I don't have a good acoustic guitar and no mic to record it. Thanks again.

Well, for me, it makes a big difference. The chord stops don't go to dead quiet now which I think keeps the flow going much better.
