Wasn't Arduino a talk show host once?  You know, the guy who was in Coming to America with Eddie Murphy?

never heard of this brand, but I used to work with my youngest son on a "Boe-Bot" by Parallax.

    fun was had by all!

I first got into robotics in college when I was the team lead of the IEEE robot challenge in 1998.  We had the best entry by far, there was no doubt in anyone's mind.  but the competition is done by simple elimination and we had a glitch.  we had seen the glitch before, but it didn't arise every time we ran and were not able to track it down.  so we were eliminated before the final round and the ones who won above us couldn't match us at all on the track in time or accuracy when our robot didn't glitch.

Good post Mike. I'd like my children to learn (possibly when they're 10+) this type of creativity and I'll truly enjoy watching them tinker around. Arduino seems to require a little more knowledge in building whereas Boe-Bot is more beginner friendly AND........"solder-free". :)

I'd also like to see what she accomplishes.

Now tell her to connect a second sensor controlling the pulse width and she's created an optical theremin

I use PIC micro-controllers for most of my projects requiring any sort of processing.

I gave a short lecture at our radio club on their use.  The favorite demonstration by far was a scrolling clock/message display using a single line of LEDs on a rotating "board" that scanned the message and displayed it in thin air.  The rotating board was a 3 foot length of wood with the LEDs at one end and the batteries as counter balance at the other and a bolt in the middle...    ... connected to an electric drill

It might be better for all involved if I just shot it and let it end like that.

My sister, brother in law and my 10 year old nephew came up this weekend to visit. At some point we starting talking about education and my nephew's interest in learning how to program stuff like the robots that he sees made with Legos and such.

I didn't know what I was talking about but I enthusiastically told them about Arduino and how accessible the stuff and the info has become. I told them you can walk right in to Radioshack and buy stuff and I showed them a bunch of YouTube videos on our big screen in an effort to get the juices flowing.

They dismissed the idea as too hard to learn for a youngster. I pointed out that Boy Scouts have Arduino clubs.

    It sort of stopped there.

This morning my wife says "I want to mess with Arduino" so we drove in to RadioShack and bought a MakerShed Ultimate Micro Controller Pack beginner kit and a book called "Getting Started with Arduino".

She read the whole book this afternoon and did all the projects and now I'm scared of what will happen next.

She called her mom to tell her what fun it was and her mom said "You've been wanting to do this since you were 10 years old!"

    Good times!

    :-)

    That is awesome!!!
