Mysterious Crackling Phenomenon

Hey Guys,

Having some problems with crackling in Sonar 8.5 lately. I know it's not my CPU being overly taxed, so I'm thinking it's my internal sound that I'm using, or something involving it. Basically what happens is that when I press a key too fast, it eventually just starts crackling. So I have to turn off and then turn back on the audio engine to get it to stop crackling. Right now my set up is basically this:

-Keyboard is connected to computer via Delta 1010LT using MIDI.

-Pair of headphones (only sound device at my disposal at the moment) are plugged into an internal Realtek HD soundcard.

I'm a little new to this, but I'm thinking my internal sound doesn't quite have the muscle that it should. Does that sound about right?

-Clay

If you do a search on this forum for Realtek HD, you won't find good things about it.  But isn't the Delta1010LT a soundcard?  Why not disable the Realtek and just use that?

It's not really a soundcard, more of an interface. You can read what all it has (as far as connections) here: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOD1010LT

Yes, but the advice remains the same. You should be using the Delta with SONAR. You don't have to disable your onboard sound, but you should deselect it on the Drivers tab of Audio Options, and you should change driver modes to ASIO for the Delta card.

The tern sound card/audio interface are used interchangeably even when they are external via USB or Firewire.

The delta is by far a better choice to use than your realtek.  You will likely need to get a splitter adapter that you can plug into a left and right output to monitor via headphones.  It doesn't look like there is a separate stereo output for headphones but I could be wrong on that.

Not really a soundcard?  From your ZZounds link:
    M-Audio Delta 1010LT 24-Bit 96kHz PCI Card 10 in/10 out 24bit 96kHz audio card.

It's a perfectly acceptable sound card and in fact quite a capable one at that.  Ditch the RealTek..............

I believe the OP is using the convention I also prefer that a "soundcard' is something with an onboard wavetable synth. The Delta 1010LT, like most "audio interfaces" does not include a synth.

In any case, we're all syaing the same thing, ultimately: Don't use the Realtek with SONAR; use the Delta, and get whatever cables and/or adapters you need to connect its main outputs to a monitoring system, even if that's just a home stereo or headphones.

Ok fair enough I didn't think soundcards even came with built in synths anymore except maybe the Sound Bastard line.........  Yes I can't see any reason for him to use the Realtek onboard synth when he has such a capable Soundcard or Audio card if you prefer in the Delta and all the great synths built into Sonar 8.5

Yeah, thanks for clearing that up. Have a hard time describing things sometimes.

I had actually thought about what a previous user suggested, which was using a split adapter to connect my headphones to the s/pdif outputs. This makes sense to me.....anybody else see this not working?

S/PDIF is a digital output and not suitable for driving headphones or speakers directly.

You will need to use the headphone out if the Delta has one or one of the audio outputs through a powerered headphone driver.

By using the Delta not only will the crackling go away (sounds like a latency problem) but your response time will be drastically reduced.........the time it takes between when you hit a key and when the sound is heard.....latency.

With the Delta you should be able to get sub 6ms latency using it's ASIO drivers depending on your CPU power.

That not only opens up all the great synths in Sonar but there are tons of free synths out there to play.  Here's a great resource site:

    http://www.kvraudio.com/

Everything computer music related and tons of free legal plugins samples etc.............

Weird they didn't include a headphone jack. I guess they figured you would have a mixer to use along with it. I would concider purchasing a simple $99 mixer as I don't think that card would have much in the way of pre amps for mike recording either. But it's seems to be a popular interface with lot's of happy users out there.

Hmmmm. Okay, well the spdif route won't work. Do I have any other options as far as adapters go? What more would you all recommend?

You could get an RCA adapter and that you could plug your head phones into.  Plug that into the 2nd RCA output pair (assuming the first pair is going to your stereo monitors).
Now insert a send on your master bus to another new bus and send the new bus to the 2nd output pair.

You would have to ensure that all of your track outputs are ultimately going to the master bus first

I have a 1010LT also, but haven't used it of late.. been using my ozone, but it's the same family of drivers really.
if your using win 7-64 bit.. it might be the actual drivers causing the issue..

as for the other card, no issue.. unselect it in sonar.. and use the LT in asio mode
if you go into the asio control panel , up your latency to 1024 or 512 buffers..

but if it's win 7 and 64 bit.. I have issues with it.. but m-audio don't listen to 3 emails!!

if you added new hardware, you might be straining the PSU.. also another thing to look for.

There are better choices too for just a little more money. But this will also gives you nice loud headphone mix while tracking. Like I said , your card is an excellent card but was really meant to be used with some outboard gear. They put the money into the amount of converters instead of a break out box.

I'm using the card with XP, so that's not the issue. But that still begs the question, how would I connect a pair of headphones to the card? I still have yet to really figure that out.

    3 ways.. 2 I use

1.. 1 set of speakers I use has a headphone socket

2... mackie big knob.. or something similar.. there are other products like it

3.. and I'm not sure if it'll work

use a 2 phono..  to female 3.5 or 1/4" jack.. and plug the headphones into that.. not sure if it'll amplify it enough though

or you could use an old midi disc with SPDIF out.. and just hit record on it.. and use the headphone out of that

as for the crackled.. check ya IRQ's in system devices.. as I turn off my network card.. as it wants to share

the cable is like this >

    http://images.productserv...iew/1732/106446063.jpg

and not a normal "Y" 3.5 jack that someone might offer you.
