Möbius

Hi,

I'm about 70% finished my next album (called "Infinity... Plus One"), and this track, Möbius, is going to be the last track on the album.

http://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/m-bius

It's an ambitious track with quiet solo piano sections and full blown orchestra, electric guit, and percussion sections, and some stuff in-between too.

I'd love some feedback on the mixing and mastering - neither of them are my strong points. Is there too much compression on the louder bits? Are the quiet bits too quiet? How about EQ? I've done what I think is a reasonable good pass... but advice is always helpful.

Thanks in advance,
Terry.

Ambitious is right.  This is great!

Mixing isn't my strong point either, but to my untrained ears, I don't think the difference between the louder and quieter parts is too great.  They seemed to flow well.  The only thing that stands out to me is at 6:00 with that huge orchestra...I'd like to not have to strain to hear the piano there. Man, that part at 7:11 and following is just fantastic!  :)  At 7:27, can you let that piano note hold just a teeny bit longer?  Sounds like someone lifted the pedal too soon.

    Fantastic! :)

There are elements of Sky about this but that probably just me.

Quite enjoyed it.  The flute sound, in the opening phase, feels like it needs more movement and the kick lacked punch for me.  Just my opinion.

The mix seems to come across very well generally.

    Thanks for sharing.

The theme from Rocky meets Elton John! I can't really comment on the mix as I listened on notebook speakers :-( A lot of work here.

I certainly enjoyed this! Haunting melody and arrangement. Nothing I'd change.

    Hi,

Thanks everyone for listening and commenting - I appreciate it.

@Janet - Thanks. I'll see how it sounds extending that held note; there were a few gaps in-between sections that were slightly too long and so I cut them all back, but you might be right on that one.

@Wookiee - Sky were the first band I got into. I'd been steered mostly in the direction of classical music by my parents (which is surprising because they weren't really into classical music themselves!) and when I heard Sky I was amazed. Of course my tastes have come on quite a bit since then bit it wouldn't surprise me if elements creep in. I'll take a look at the synth at the start and the punch on the kick. Thanks for listening!

@bandonthrun19 - interesting comparison. By 'Theme From Rocky' do you mean Eye of the Tiger? Is the blend a good thing? Thanks for commenting.

@bayoubill - Having just listened to one of your own excellent mixes I'll take the fact that there's nothing you'd change as meaning that for once I've done a pretty good pass. Thanks!

If anyone's interested, this track has been an exceptionally difficult one to create - getting it to sound like the arrangement I heard in my imagination has taken over a month and I almost gave up at one point! Glad I didn't though!

    Cheers,
    Terry.

I like this a lot. It does sound a bit Elton John-like. The opening flute seems too loud to me and also where it comes in the second time. Having it pulled back in the mix might make it more effective. Didn't seem so bad on the second listen though so don't pay any attention to me.  I agree with Wookie that the kick sounds a bit wimpy, but if it was intended for blending purposes, then it can work as it is.

I think my problem is that I become easily bored. If I haven't nailed it within a couple of sessions then I tend to just give up. Solo piano music is so much simpler...

Thanks, glad you like it. I'll take your comments (and Wookiee's) on board regarding the flute and the kick and see if I can rework it a bit.

    Cheers,
    Terry.

Yeah, I hear ya.  It does take a lot of concentration to stick with it, that's for sure.

Don't give up though... you're cranking out some great stuff!

I think you mixed and mastered this well.  This is an epic song, and you used dynamics very well.  Personally, I think it's a few measures too long, but that's just me.  I prefer to leave my audience wanting more than less.  Overall, very good.

Terry this is a great arrangement, not really much wrong with the mix that I can hear, other than maybe the quiet passages are too quiet. I agree(once again) with Lynn lol...it is getting into soundtrack movie music territory. Anything over 4 minutes has my attention waning, but I have also been called impatient lol.

Long or no, it is a great arrangement!

    Hi,

Thanks again to all for listening and commenting.

@Lynn - Thanks for the comments on mixing and mastering and other compliments. This track is going to be the last on an album with a concept of Infinity and I wanted something that wouldn't be over too quickly, but I know exactly what you mean about the 'few measures' too long. I worry that if I add more points of interest to the measures towards the end that it'll be too full... but if I take those measures out then it'll all be over too quick. Decisions, decisions!

@Starise - thanks for the compliments on arrangement. Anything over 4 minutes is too long? I guess you're not a fan of any prog rock or Mike Oldfield then ;-) I'm quite happy listening to anything of any length - but I've always loved epic, overblown, (self indulgent?) music.

    Thanks again,
    Terry.
