N00b Blues

I just installed MC4 and am trieing to figure this thing out. I can not seem to get the midi groove files to play back nor does it seem that I am able to use the soft synth. the help info is kind of vague at this point...do I need to get a different sound card ie other then mme and or a midi controler keyboard to use the soft synth and groove clips?
I am going to eventualy get theall the above but at the moment I just wanted to use my guitar and the loops for back ground ...doesnt seem to be going to happen that way tho.
Can any one shed some light on my N00bness?

Firts of all...let me welcome you to the MC forums....

Tell us about th esystem...computer, speed, ram, and most important...the soundcard.

It sounds like you will need to learn about soft synths, and how to use them. Check out Tutorial #8. also www.herbhartley.com has a good bit of info that will help take you from a new project to having TTS working with 3 instrument (midi) playing. Navigate to music page> MC4 tips. That should help....

as always, come back & post here any other questions.

edit: be patient...there is a learning curve with this software.... it will come if you are willing to work at it and learn it.

yes, your soundcard is the weakest link, but you might be able to use it until you can afford to upgrade it. first, since you are using the onboard soundcard, lets change to MME driver mode:
    OPTIONS>AUDIO>ADVANCED>DRIVER MODE = MME
    close MC
    restart MC
    let the wave profiler run.

then, as Herb says since you're trying to make the MIDI groove clips make sound, then you'll need to learn about softsynths. look at herb's website for help with that. also , I advise working thru tutorial #8 in the help files.

and welcome aboard! we rarely flame noobs here. go to the sonar forum, however, and you'd better bring your flameproof underwear!!!!

If you have a MIDI track or a MIDI groove clip, and the soft synth inserted okay, you have to go to each MIDI track and change the output (O) to the soft synth. The usual outputs are something like none, MS GS Wavetable Synth, TTS-1 or other soft synth. Change the output to TTS-1. You might need to use channel 10 on the MIDI drum track for the TTS-1 to recognize the data as drums. In the 'bank' drop-down in the MIDI track, select the preset rhythm bank. I think.
You don't need a MIDI keyboard or controller to work with MIDI. Being data, any way you get the data in the track is good. Load a MIDI file directly or enter the data in the Piano Roll View (PRV) or notes in the Staff View with your mouse.

Thanks for all the help guys, erum but I must be dumber then I thought. when I push the play button nothing happens, so I can not even tell if there will be sound or not. I hav e tried your directions several times but I am just not getting it to work...oh well lol
when I use regular loop files it works ok but when I use the midi groove clips the program does not even start up so I dont know what it is that I am , or am not doing right.

First, make sure you are working with MIDI tracks; thay have a little circular icon that represents the end of a MIDI plug. Select that track by clicking on the track number. Place the 'now' line at the point you want the MIDI groove clip. Open the Loop Explorer view and find a MIDI Groove Clip. Double-click it and it should transfer to the MIDI track where the 'now' line was.
If the clip is in the track press play. If no sound is heard, expand the MIDI track so you can see it's properties. What is listed for Input (I) and output (O)? What is the channel number? It should be 10 for drums.
If you want to use the TTS-1 soft synth, go to the top and click 'Insert>Soft Synth>TTS-1'. De-select the "Create MIDI Source Track" since you already have a source track, the track with the Groove Clip in it. TTS-1 should load. Now go to the MIDI track and change it's output to TTS-1. Can you hear it now?

Welcome Jerilee. There's quite a learning curve. It all falls into place pretty quickly if you want it to. Ive been around here a very short while and things are now clicking into place. They are a good bunch here always willing to help.

Probably... the best thing to do is open a new totally blank project file and insert only one audio track. Try recording your guitar to it using whatever input you have...see if you can record & playback audio...audio is the simple test to see if it's working.

Most of the "sample files" that come with MC4 are all midi and require a synth to be inserted and working to get any sound.

Second the guitar hacker's thoughts...start with the simple things, do one step at a time. One audio track, check if all of your settings are right, then the midi, then the groove clips, and check in here if there are any problems at each step.

this is so frustraighting. I followed the directions up to when it says to choose sound card output in the drop down menu under where tts-1 is selected...but only I am not able to select a sound card driver the only thing available is another tts-1 which I know shouldnt be there but I can not seem to figure out what I did rong...I have retraced each step but I am lost.

Oh and I have learned how to get some of the Groove clips to play and I also have successfuly recorded some guitar licks and played tem back so I am not a total loser...errum but the tts-1 thing is driving me crazy cuss I am not used to feeling this stupid for such a long time.

Slow down and do this. Go to options Audio and chose MME driver mode, then close and reopen the program.

Go back to options/audio, and make sure that the systems sound card is listed as the record and playcak timing masters, and as the drivers.

    Then try again

TTS is a software synth, and has nothing to do with audio clips, or recorded audio. It is only to be used to playback a midi track.
