NEW ORIGINAL Vocal - The Choices We Made
This is my latest. I will post the lyrics tomorrow, but hopefully you can understand the words, I try hard to make it so. Welcome mix comments or observations. There might be some guitar stuff in here too. Daryl The Choices We Made http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=582907&songID=10156031

The Choices We Made Verse 1: How Did You Arrive At This Place in Time Did You End Up Here Just Stumblin’ Blind Did You Follow Your Dreams Or The Easy Road Did You Travel Light Or With a Heavy Load Did You Swallow Your Pride? Did You Make Amends? Did You Turn Your Back On All Your Friends? Left or Right Flee or Fight Chorus: We Live or Die by the Choices We Made The Bridges We Burned and the Parts That We Played I Wonder Was It Worth The Price That We Paid What’s Gone Before We Are Today Verse 2: Did You Cry Enough Did You Beg For More Did You Hear a Knock Did You Open the Door Did You Stand Your Ground Did You Turn and Run Did You Bring a Knife Instead of a Gun You Decide the Road to Take You Can’t Undo The Choice You Make Win or Lose, It’s How You Choose

No need to repeat what I think of your music. I have said it before and my view is only strengthen by every piece I hear. Sublime. And that guitar lead. Takes me to heaven (assuming they will let me in!). And the lyrics are pure poetry - a wealth of meaning in a few perfectly chosen words. Why can't I write like that?! Best Regards Malcolm

Wow that guitar sounds sweet and some really nice bass work too! Your vocals sound very smooth. I didn't like the song itself quite as much as I liked "The Speed of Life", but it's a good solid song for sure.

Malcom, Thank you very much. You can write lyrics. There is a simple process that you can get out of song writing books. My suggestion is keep paper handy, write down any good lines that pop into your head (because you wont recall it later). Then ask yourself, what could a song be about that would use that line. Then write an out line of what you want to say. What do you want to establish in the opening, what do you want to describe in the middle, and how do you want to wrap it up? What is important to reinforce during the chorus? Once you have that outline, the lyrics come pretty easily, or at least much easier because you have PLAN. The outline is the hardest part, but without it you're just seeking "good lines" to put together, and that would be tough indeed. Also, don't worry - ALL musicians go to Heaven. Dave - Thanks, I'm really fond of this guitar solo for some reason, it just feels good to me.

yep agree with Dave's comments in the main. you have a way of taking a common cadence but adding enough harmonic interest with your guitar runs. solo is sweet. for me, i'd like to hear a bit more of change-up from the verse to the chorus, different drums or instrumentation. it works better the second time with just the vocals. mix is great.

Mark, I agree. I struggle with the handicap of limited vocal range, so I tend to get stuck writing melodies that don't have a lot of dynamic range, because I can't sing them. I am working on a new tune right now that is forcing me up the scale and with more dynamics. Right now it's a struggle but I'm going to stick with it and see if I can't coax a little more range out of these old brittle vocal chords. Either that, or I've got to start getting these young guys and gals to sing my songs.

I like it. " How Did You Arrive At This Place in Time " It's funny because I just finished one called "In time" that I'm working on right now :-) It won't sound like this though. That harmonizer sounds pretty good. You've really learned how to use that thing. "Did You Swallow Your Pride?" I did, but I was young and needed the money :-( I hope no one judges me.

somewhere in there I heard Gerry Raffety...nice work...the intro sounded a bit busy (for my ears) and I think i'd pull back the higher guitar parts just a wee bit to nix some of the clutter...Even though yoru performance is very strong all the way round I'd also play with the fadders/mix a bit to see if I could effect the overall dynamics.I'd try to sneak in a bit more energy in as needed as well as pull things back when a bit more when you need a bit of intimacy....not sure if that makes any sense but the mix is clean/clear yet flat. very good job overall!!

Tom, that you those are observations that agree with my own. I agree on the intro as well. Dynamics is something that we worked on constently in my old concert days, but recording a-track-at-a-time doesn't provide the kind of spontaneous dynamic interations and emphasis that live playing does. It's a lot more work in the studio and something I'm going to increase my focus on more. Thanks for the careful listen and observations! Biabadude - Thank you. Gary - Thanks so much. Thanks on the lyrics. I wasted a lot of decades thinking I could not write lyrics, and the past couple of years it's been getting easier. And writing a good verse is right up there with learning a hot new lick. ps - I'm also still playing the heck out your music with my new speakers at home. You got some really hot stuff on your site, I really like the things you have done, my wife loves it too. Bobby - Thank you. Clifford - Thanks for comments. I was going to go acapella all the way but in the end, I liked at least having the bass there.

Very nicely done. I am trying how to classify the song style: a bit of caribbean, a bit of folk, some Jimmy Buffett. Certainly an unique combination. I really like your production, it complements well with the voice without overdoing it. Nice song also.

Vicente - Thank you. I also have to laugh because most all of my original tunes do not fit cleanly into any genre. I never know what chart to post my songs on. They are not quite rock, not quite country, not quite fully jazz. I just have to guess, so I'm not sure the right people always hear my music, perhaps because there is not a genre for people who listen to my type of off-the-wall-not-typical-stuff. Sometimes I think I subconsciously write my songs to keep them from sounding like they belong in a particular genre. Maybe that's because of my innate lack of interest in anything that sounds too commercial. Maybe that bodes well for becoming famous decades AFTER I die.

Robby - Thanks, I really do appreciate that because I've really been working hard at it. Singing was so easy when I was young and doing it 5 - 7 nights a week. Now it's work, but I'm really trying to get it back thanks to Frank "pushing/encouraging" me. I don't want to tell you how many times I re-recorded those harmony lines Although, as you know.. by the time you do it that many times to get a good take... by then you can do it. I think they call it practice

Thank you Frank. And thanks for getting me motivated on the vocals. You're an inspiration. I had friend who felt the bass was a tad too high so I rolled it off, but I think I agree that it could use a little more bottom end. I think I feel the same on the drums. My ears don't hear the drums properly so I tend to back off on them out of uncertainty. I appreciate the careful listen!

A good song Daryl. I had to give this a couple of listens.. to make sure my ears were'nt plaing tricks on me..needs a little more bottom end on this..bring up bass and more 'thud' on the kick please, as it's sounding a bit thin on my monitors. The vox are sweet as the guitar tones. The hand percussion sounds are really nice. Me likes yer songs! Larry

Really really enjoyed that! I too would like to hear just a bit more bottom. Were it me, I'd back the guitar solo back just a wee bit to bed it better and instead of a fade at the end... after about three repeats I end with a strong measure of syncopated shots on the snare toms & cymbal... at least that's what my mind heard when I thought it was coming. Maybe it's just me... but your voice just seems a natural fit for the songs you do!

Daryl - this is great! man I always love your guitar work and sound! color me a fan! I haven't read everyone's crits, so forgive me if I repeat something. I'm not fond of the bongos along with the standard kit - but that one's a personal preference. and I'm not saying never do this - I just don't think it works for this song. love those harmonies! fantastic work! you've got a couple of places where you recorded some plosives. I could point them out if you don't hear them. but I'd recommend some punch in and redo those places - just a couple of areas. great stuff, daryl!

Not read all the other comments so apologies for any repeats.... I always like the way you write your lyrics - with a kind of wisdom that's easy to relate to. Listening on laptop mix seems to translate pretty well, certainly better than any of mine ever seem to. My only real crit would be that the chorus is not really distinct enough from the verse the first time - needs a little more contrast to me.

Janet - Scotty - Thank you! Love that new tune you guys posted! Larry - I agree, a couple others have noted it needs a little more bottom. Thanks Tex - Thank you for the listen. I have always disliked fade outs, but I find I get lazy when there is not a clean resolution at the end of a verse or chorus. We always did orchestrated endings in my road days, not sure why I get lazy in the studio. I guess I'm just getting old. I'm going to try to get out of the fade out habit. Thanks for raising the bar on me, I need the push! Beagle - Those are congas, and I usually can't get enough of them. But it's good to remind me that not everyone shares my over indulgence in congas. I struggle with plosives and sssss. It seems to be part of my speech. I've had a little luck with the desser but it's a struggle. Thanks for the careful listen. Paulo - You are very right and it is a comment my wife made. It's just the way it came out. I've written a few like that. Strangely they always seem to be well accepted in spite of that. I think I get into that mode because I often use harmony lines as my melody line when writting. That tends to make a chorus or verse not quite resolve at the end, which tends to lead into a chorus that also doesn't resolve. But it is a good and honest observation. It's one of the things I plan to work on in my writing. Look for my new tune next week it has BIG change between verse and chorus. Thank you for the careful listen. Again to all I really appreciate the honest feedback. It's priceless. I just wish I knew enough to really be of help to others. I'm just constantly blown away with the talent I hear on this site. And when I get feed back from such musicians, it's just really a very cool thing. Thank you!

You got me at that diminished opening lick. So clean and sweet. The backup is really great as are the leads. It's only a minor crit, but I agree about backing off some on the lead parts. A really well blended mix otherwise. Very nice vocals as well and stellar guitar playing!

Great Daryl. Wish i could sing like that. I'm listening on the work speakers but I am definitely picking up some kind of bloom in the low mids from the rhythm or bass guitar.
