NEW SONG -- "Runner" ***EVEN NEWER mix up now***
Hey guys! So here's a brand new song...I've been mixing and EQing and Compressing and whatnot all day...my ears are tired. But anyway, I wanted to do an acoustic thing without drums. The song is just talking about how we are completely dependent on God for everything; that we needed Him in the past, and we need Him still now. Any feedback is appreciated. :) http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10309901 EDIT: So I got the vocals a little more fixed. Any other suggestions are totally welcome! EDIT (2/26/11): I refined it even more, playing with the compression settings and equalizing the vocals.

Well I reckon it sounds good. On my average PC speakers the acoustic guitar recording(s) sound quite good, although the slight differences between takes on the L and R make it jump back and forth a bit too much for my liking, especially at the start, but that's only personal. Vox sound good, but are often lost in the guitar a bit. I couldn't make out much of the words, and from what you've said, they're the point of this for you. It sounds unfair, I know, because there's only vox and guitar, but I wonder if you need a slice of guitar removed for the vox to sit in. Maybe raise the level of the vox as well? Regarding the arrangement, since it's only vox and G for the whole song, have you tried some plucking in the chords early on and developing into strummed chords? Strummed chords for the whole song sound OK, but it doesn't let the arrangement develop. Again, that's only personal taste. Overall it sounds good. Well done.

Hey there Nick, I would take the vox back just a tiny bit or perhaps a brick wall limitter. I would also moisten them (vox) with a nice reverb. I liked this a lot. I would add some percussion though (congas? shakers? tamborine?) a mandolin :-) And some strings! MORE COWBELL!! I'm hearing my fretless bass playing on this. I would bring the background vox in when you start singing Hallelujah :-) A Hammond... And I would bring the drums in BIG toward the end!! But I've been known to over produce the **** out of things... I say go big or go home :-) But I have a few pretty naked productions too (but I'll probably revisit mine and make them monsters :-) Good job though? It made me think about church, I don't go anymore :-( Too many sinners in church for me?

Thanks guys! I'll definitely go back and work on it. That's good, simple advice. I'll take it! Lol. And robby - haha, we're all sinners; equally broken before God. In fact, the Bible says not one person is righteous (Ecclesiastes 7:20 if you're curious). This allows us to see just how big God's love is for us to save us through the sacrifice of His Son. Thanks again for the input on my music - it is really helpful!!

Sometimes ya gotta double bump, brother Trigger! If I could sound like this doing just vocal and guitar I'd do a bunch of tunes I wrote. I can't sound that good. I am a group artist, never a soloist. Your song and your recording seem just wonderful to me!! Oh, and thanks, I believe you can't get enough good news! :-)

not sure how much you pulled that LVox back, or how you're treating it exactly? I would bring it up a tiny bit, and squeeze it. What kind of compression/limitting are you doing on the LVox? And please be specific. I think this is better Nick. But it's not there yet IMO.

Well, my vox are center panned. I have no other vocals except the melody track. For the compression, I'm kinda playing around with three things - the waveform level, volume automation level, and actual compression settings. The compression settings are like this: 4.8:1 Ratio -24.03 db Threshold 3.68 db Knee 12.12 db Makeup Gain 19ms Attack 149.6 Release The track volume slider itself is at -10.1 db, with the waveform at -.69 db. With all these settings, the vocals are getting up to about -15db. I know it's kinda weird...but I basically just played with stuff until I got something that sounded okay. Any suggestions or help with this would be awesome.

I use Izotope Alloy, and have toyed with the idea of getting Nectar but I'm currently broke :-( But it's tools like this that let you really get control over the transients, compression, limiting, excitation, EQ, etc... They have a lot of great presets and then you can play with the settings after that. Here's nectar; http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/nectar/ I was just hearing them a bit too prominently before, and now (IMO) not quite enough. Another thing to keep in mind, I know you want the vocals "up front." One thing to watch is if at the begining you're bleeding instruments in, then the vocal level needs to start out a bit lower, and then as other instruments bleed in, the vocal volume is adjusted upward as appropriate.

Sounds like these guys are giving you plenty of tips. I'll just say (cause I can't do much better), I like the song. I can 'hear' the chorus getting bigger--drums, bass, something. That's not to say I don't like it the way it is. You're a good song-writer and singer.

great song...vox is set back a lil too much...sounds like that compression is taking over (in the vox)? I'd also like to head a bit more warmth in the acoustic guitar. again...love your voice and love the tune!

Lol, thanks guys. I'll get this right eventually. It's been either too low or too hot - up and down. I think the compressor itself isn't the problem - it's the one using it (my personal producer and recording engineer of course....except not really). I'm compressor-illiterate.

Nice tune. I wouldn't have minded a bit more reverb on the vocals or probably better would be a double, really fill it out. Just real light. Also (and I'm NOT an expert here). But it sounded a bit pitchy in a couple of spots to me. But take that with a grain of salt, and since I can't sing a lick. If others confirm though, you might want to think about using a bit of v-vocal or something. Please note though, that if it seems like people are picking on your vocals it's because they are so naked in the song since there's not anything else really going on (and the guitar sounds pretty good). Thanks,

This is really nice. Great acoustics. Your vocals have great pitch...I still think you need just a bit more time on the compression. Its almost there... Compression is used primarily to keep your vocals at a consistent level...its not meant to make things louder (although it can if thats what you want it to do) its used to smooth out the dynamics so you don't have sections of quiet and sections of loud making it sound in and out...if you catch what I mean. Once you get it nice and squeezed then you can apply makeup gain to have it nice and balanced with the rest of the instrumentation. Just be careful not to over do it. again, you are almost there...just a few spots where the vocals lose their focal point.
