NEW THREAD: Trying to solve 2 major problems in Sonar Platinum:
I'm updating Windows 8.1 now will try to get: 1. All selected tracks to switch from Waveform view to Automation...and then back. 2. I will try to bounce out all tracks through master bus to create a stereo mixdown and see if it will sound like all the original tracks. this will happen in 24-48 hours. thanks - bruce

Not sure about what view switching you are trying to do. I only look at automation as needed by opening the automation lanes. However, as for bouncing, Edit->Select->None. Then, File->Export Audio. In the dialog, select "What you hear". Regards, Dan

select all track, hold the control button down, change the edit filter to automation. reverse the process to go back to wave form. PS- you need automation edits to be done to see them in the track. this is a no brainer but its worth mentioning.

I go back and forth a lot between clips view and automation view As I often did in ProTools 10 I do not use LANES as the take up to much screen real estate. I prefer to go back and forth. As for Mixdown, if I bounce the entire mix through through the stereo buss and use BOUNCE TO TRACKS, it sounds as though some of the soft synths are playing the wrong presets. Everything sounds fine before the BOUNCE. My workaround was to Bounce each SUB-FADER separately, then mix all the SUBS. The tracks all sounded fine but I should not have to perform this extra mix or extra step. I will NOW uninstall all Cakewalk Sonar Platinum and Reinstall ALL Cakewalk Sonar Platinum to see if that works.

Why are you doing that,, there's nothing wrong with your copy of Sonar.. You are just having trouble figuring out how things work. It won't change by re installing.. Sounds like your expecting Sonar to behave like Pro Tools. That never works with any DAW. There's no automation "view" Automation is either hidden or open below the track. You toggle it. And you don't bounce to track to make a stereo wave file of the song... you "export" your mix. Sonar defaults to this when you choose Export audio. Only thing you might need to change is the bit depth from 32 to 16 if your going to burn a CD from it. You can use select all or select none, I find select none before exporting always works for me.

Sorry Cactus Music. Not True. You change the automation/clips view by selecting whichever tracks you want and holding [CONTROL] while you mouse to one track's edit filter and switch it from clips to automation or visa-versa. it's in the manual. You do not need to use LANES to see automation.

Cactus Music: Wrong again. It's right there on their website: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR%20X3&language=3&help=Mixing.45.htmlBouncing tracks The Track view Tracks > Bounce to Track(s) command lets you combine one or more audio tracks into a submix. A submix can be a mono track, a stereo track or several mono tracks that contain the mixture of the original tracks, preserving the volume, pan, and effects for each track. If you’re bouncing tracks that are routed to a surround bus (SONAR Producer only), you can bounce them to as many mono tracks as you have surround channels, by choosing the Split Mono option in the Channel Format field of the Bounce to Tracks dialog box, and also choosing a surround bus in the Source Category field. After their creation, the submix tracks are just like any other tracks—you can edit them, add effects, copy them to another project, etc. The original, unmixed audio tracks are not deleted, so you can archive them and recover them later, or continue using them as before.

I tried two different scenarios switching Edit Filters on multiple selected tracks (i.e. hold Ctrl, change edit filter): - Changing the Edit Filters on multiple audio tracks worked as expected. In this scenario, the tracks had been inserted/created as audio.
- I then created some audio tracks by freezing soft synths. When attempting to change the Edit Filter to volume automation on these tracks, the Edit Filter only switched the automation on one track, not all the selected tracks. I expected to see Volume automation on all the selected tracks. Oddly, switching the Edit Filter back to "Clips" worked on all the selected tracks as expected.
Bruce, you mention soft synths -- I wonder if the issue you're seeing follows any of these scenarios. Perhaps this would help narrow down the issue. Edit: While typing this reply, a few more posts appeared. Perhaps my scenarios aren't relevant! BTW, in scenario #2, I did a bounce before freezing.

to make a finished mix down, you do use the export function. Cactus knows what he is talking about. he is one of the brighter guys on this forum. your lucky to have him helping you. just explain your problem clear and precise. bounce to tracks is for internal project work. to save CPU, or make custom mixes within your mix. Export is for finished product mixes.

Tom B: Thanks for your information. I just had a similar situation where I would select either multiple Audio tracks or Multiple Soft Synth tracks Audio tracks: select multiple, hold CONTROL, change view filter, only switches one at a time from clips but does switch them all back from Automation. Instrument tracks: SAME RESULTS AS AUDIO TRACKS.

ChuckEBaby: I'm quite certain that if you select multiple tracks and then select Bounce to TRACKS, a dialog box comes up to ask you if you want a new stereo track (in my case, stereo) but that new bounced track does not resemble the original pre-bounced tracks...AND IT SHOULD.

Your experience with the "Instrument Tracks" seems quite similar as my scenario #2. However, I had no problems switching automation filters on multiple Audio tracks as described in scenario #1. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I truly don't understand your mixdown process. You bounce a number of tracks to a stereo buss, but I don't know what the destination is. Normally I would bounce 8 mono drum tracks to 1 stereo track as a mixdown. I've never bounced to a stereo buss. When I want a song mix, then I export to WAV or MP3 via the Master Out buss. As for automation, lanes seems to be the way Cakewalk is going. Better to deal with it than to try and make it work like another DAW.

080316 Today I created 4 audio tracks in a new session file and 4 instrument tracks in the same session Cakewalk Sonar Platinum (22.7.0) As is shown in the reference manual, I selected multiple tracks (either all audio tracks, or all instrument tracks or simply ALL tracks) and held [control] edit view and switched from clips to automation, back to clips. All audio tracks worked fine. Instrument tracks did not. This is not acceptable. I've been told this is not how Cakewalk Sonar Platinum is going, BUT if you list a function in your reference manual...and it DOES NOT work, your program is malfunctioning and needs to be fixed. I've reported this problem quite a few times in the last 8 months and Cakewalk techs have not fixed the problem. IT IS A PROBLEM. STILL. Chuck Jones: I have appreciated a lot of information here. Also, bought Sonar Platinum because of the features list. There are items I really use a lot that are listed in the reference manual but are not working in the actual application, despite updating Windows 8.1 and uninstalling and reinstalling Sonar Platinum yesterday. Sorry man, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting software to function as described in the reference manual.

pwalpwal: I cannot say for certain what prompted chuckebaby's response, but i'm guessing that since he rightfully believes that the way to automate tracks is by using lanes not automating on top of clips...and...exporting a mix is the way to create a stereo mix of a full session. He's not wrong about these things, but if the manual says I can select automation on ALL selected tracks, no lanes required...and if the manual says I can bounce to tracks right inside the same session, but I can't do either of these things, despite all the tech support previously and all the updates...well...Sonar Platinum doesn't work as stated. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

pwalpwal: I think chuckebaby was trying to be helpful the way he understands that. I sorta think that if it works for him it should work for anybody. well...that is partially correct but we all have our preferences. as for updating docs...I had cakewalk tech support log into my PC a few times in the 1st half of 2016. each time they did not understand why things were not acting properly. even after all the updates yesterday, things are still not functioning properly...and I need to get some more music finished on a DAW that works as promised...and Sonar Platinum ain't doin' it.

If the synth isnt mixing down properly - try freezing it. The automation lanes are really convenient once you get used to how they work, and one of the ways Sonar can help you. Sonar is capabale of a great many things, often when I can't get something to work the way I think It should, it has been because I unintentionally was telling it to do something else. By Instrument track - what exactly are you referring to? Soft Synth? Every soft synth in sonar requires a midi input track, and an audio output track.
Be the first one who thinks that you can Sonar Platinum, Windows 7 64 bit - clean install January 2016, Focusrite Pro 40, Outboard Pres, Native Instruments Komplete, Izotope, PSP, Melodyne, Vegetarian

I've learned one thing about Sonar,, there is always more than one way to accomplish the same task. So my answer was based on the method I found works the best, every time, for me. Automation used to be drawn over top of the track but this is one of the little things that changed with new releases and take lanes. At first I and many others hated take lanes, but then you "get it" and move on. If you don't like it you always have other Daw's. But I tried that too and Sonar still has most of what I need so I'm commited. I'm totally aware of bounce to track but as others have pointed out most would use that to tidy up an overcrowded project. Have you tried the export feature?

well rather than looking for a reason what prompted my response why not help the guy out and open up sonar and try and repro it ? that's what I did last night and here's what I found. bgl1 just tried switching all selected tracks from waveforms to automation view and back. still not working. I just opened up a project held down control and clicked the edit filer button switched to automation/volume. All 7 lanes opened automation in the waveform (not a lane). so it does work. I was going to help him with his second issue but its not worth it. im not going to open up sonar, repro, close sonar, come back here and try and trouble shoot a problem when I feel like im talking to someone who doesn't want my advise. or is going to tell me... "wrong...or Wrong again...or the CAPS. hey im a reasonable guy. I help people because I enjoy it. im not enjoying this. im out. I hope this explains a little better in detail.
