NI Komplete Kontrol S49, transport controls and and Sonar Platinum controller surfaces

The Komplete Kontrol S series are all on sale for $100 off normal price so I went ahead and picked up the S49. Before I did, I read up on getting things working in Sonar, and saw the suggested solution in a few forum posts was to configure the Sonar controller surface as a VS-100 instead of the Mackie Control. However, there weren't any detailed instructions for this and I'm not able to find any option for  VS-100 in the control surfaces setup in preferences.

But, I was able to get transport controls working by configuring an ACT controller surface and setting its input port to Komplete Kontrol -DAW, which is apparently only for transport control messages. Then I just MIDI learned the appropriate cells in the ACT controller to the transport buttons on the S49 like normal, and they are working as expected. However, the ACT controller will only respond to the transport controls, trying to MIDI learn other parameters to the rotaries on the S49 won't work (I'm switching the S49 to MIDI mode to try this). But then...I added a second ACT controller surface with its input and output set to Komplete Control - 1, switched the S49 to MIDI mode, and MIDI learn worked normally and I could map the S49 rotaries to volume sliders on Sonar's console (I haven't tried pan, but I'm guessing it will work by scrolling to a new page on the S49).

Anyway, you may be thinking "If it ain't broke...", but I'm wondering if there's any hidden snafu ready to unfold in using two ACT surfaces, and if there's any real advantage to using the VS-100 controller surface instead (I poked around the Cakewalk knowledge base and found a download for a VS-100 controller surface plugin, so I'm guessing that would make the VS-100 available as an option in preferences>control surfaces?).

Any thoughts or insights appreciated. So far what I've done is working, and I'm loving the S49 (bye bye plugin mapping headaches!), so maybe I should just call it good?

Hmm, well I installed the VS-100 plugin, and the transport controls worked automatically when using it. I still had to add an ACT control surface to map the rotaries to the fader and pan controls, so basically it's about the same.
