NIGHTMAN (just found in my archives)

Well I will add the disclaimer that uh, uh ,OH....My worst production to date. Cakewalk PRO AudioStone age again. I found an old tape about 3rd generation and dropped it into Studio7. 14 years also, like REFLECTIONS only off a 3RD gen tape. I really am asking for thoughts on the song. I can't find the original bundle so I will have to totally do over.
The song gets more relevant as time goes by. We all have a nightman!! There can be critique on the recording but I can't do anything about it! Thanks for any and all comments.

You know, any song can be made great or awful depending on how it was recorded and mixed. There is certainly enough stuff here that is really good (lyric theme, harmonies, groove) to merit a do-over.

James and Fox Thanks a bunch. It's another song that was requested a lot when we played live. I'm truly happy to hear your thoughts. It shall be done.

Definitely a good tune, Warren. I listened while I was reading part of Timothy Good's "Need To Know...UFOs, the Military, and Intelligence" and it was the perfect backdrop.

I'd like to hear it with more realistic drums.

Was that done with an Ovation Acoustic with a pick-up?

WOW, what a great written song. The vox and the performance on the acoustic are just FANTASTIC. This gave me a LOS LONELY BOYS vibe only unplugged. No other crits that hasn't already been said about the mix. AWESOME, tune and performance!

    Hi, evadianepug,

Add me to the group that would like to hear this song re-done. It's a cool tune and nicely arranged. Given what you might be able to do with the instrumentation given all of the tools available to us nowadays, this could become a really atmospheric song. Well, it's already an atmospheric song, but it could become even more-so with some new orchestration. I look forward to hearing the 2009 version if you decide to re-do the song.

And, if I may be so nosy as to ask: What, exactly, is a "pugtone"? ;>)

    Best regards,
    Bill

Yeah I've heard this one. Why not redo it? It fits your vocal style "perfectly"... But yes, the recording sounds like geese farts on a muggy day...

Like your blended style. Also listened to your song "Reflections". Really like it. During the breaks I thought I could hear somewhere in the distant background, some melodic radical echoey lead guitar. But then maybe that was just my ears again... lol. Very nice tune. Maybe you will bring that one back too. A nice listen.

I am currently working on an older live recording that was not recorded as well as your 14 year old ones. But it sure is giving me the opportunity to learn mixing. Or maybe what the limits are on reconstructive mixing might be a better description...

Frank Redux seems to be the plan. Thanks for listening!

BobK The drums were off of a Yamaha keyboard, 20 years old, well 6 years old then!! The guitar is an oh, ummm, OVATION ACOUSTIC with a pickup. You have a great ear or it sounded like snot and you had one that did too. LOL Thanks a lot for your comments!

Kev Hey, Chicago boy! I'm from Phoecago, Arinois. Half my life in Chicago and half in Phoenix. I wonder who gets the other half? ha! Thanks so much for your assessement. I'm all pumped about this song again after all these years. I'm glad I posted it. Thanks again!

Bill How about it? All I had was that Ovation, the old Yamaha keyboard and a computer with wdos 3.1. It was Cakewalk Pro Audio 3 or something, I don't even know. I can't wait to try the new stuff available. So much stuff and me being so simple. I might need help! Thanks for listening and for you comments. Greatly appreciated. Oh, chuckle, a Pugtone is a guy nicknamed Pug who left his band (we were called the Pugtones) and was on his own so therefore he could only be a "Pugtone". The original name was "Uncle Bubby and the Pugtones" I guess you had to be there! (First smiley I've ever used)

Robby You heard it in the rawest, geesiest, fartiest form. Oh, yeah, it was this same one. ha!!! It is one of the only tunes I ever wrote that seemed natural to sing. Thanks, buddy!!

Chuck You hear that too? Good luck on the reconstruction. Thanks for the Reflections comments. PTL and keep playin (and recording). Thanks a lot Chuck!

Yes, i can't wait for this to be remixed. This deserves that.

It is one excellent song. Not going to comment too much just yet, as your aware of what is required. Dont touch the lyrics though, they are great.

    Warren,

Your voice is very good on this. Did you just drop the final 2 track from the tape into Sonar?? No way to clean up the individual tracks? Great song. I like hearing music from the 'back when' days!! I've been asking/pleading with my old band-mates from the 80's to send me the demo tapes that were made in a 'real' studio so I can drop 'em into Sonar and post, but they're all promises and no delivery on their end... Anyways, I liked how this song 'grooved'. It's a 'good-un'.

I like this song Warren - definitely give it another go. BTW, cool guitar solo.

IMO, this has a CSN vibe to it - it was probably the harmonies (which are very good) that made me think of them.

Larry This was on a cassette tape I found in an old box. I put it in one of those little 8" boomboxes with the earphone plug going to my interface. It can't get much worse than that. I think the original cw bundle was probably a good recording. There is no way to do anything to the tracks. That's a shame, huh. Well, we'll play with it. Hunt down your band-mates and get your old music. You don't want to lose that!! Thanks for your comments. I really appreciate it!

Doug Well, you are close to my heart now. CSN have been one of my all time favorites. I remember playing "Hey Joe" when Crosby was wit McGwinn and the Byrds. CSN, Eagles, hmmm common thread. Love harmonies. It was nice of you to listen and thanks for your comments!

Guitar is brave and sweet 2/3rds through. Rhythm is jazzy and catchy.

    Hey, Warren,

This is a great song with a very smooth, tasty vibe. The vocals and harmonies are really well done and the playing is great. To me it sounds like an interesting cross between CSN and Boz Skaggs. I really like it and think it's well worth the do-over.

    Great job!

I can see why this one was requested often.

Not that bad for an old mix, but of course a redo would sound tons better.
