It's my understanding that the Yamaha speakers were used to represent the lo-fi sound, or the sound of ordinary playback systems most people had in their homes or vehicles.

They were not designed for that purpose but were relegated to that usage by the major studios.

While it's true that they are heavy on mid-range audio reproduction, so are most clock radios, car speakers, and indeed home "bookshelf" type speakers, which they (the Yamaha NS-10 speakers) best represent.

Yep..Will...I found a lot of info on search.

I guess on could come close to the NS10 range by just using a highpass/lowpass filter on the master bus to allow only the midrange to come through...or push the buttons on the mastering EQ plug to only listen to midrange.
Im babbling...not enough coffee yet. ha

Im just gonna do the norm...try on comp spks, car, jambox etc.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Hi Jeff I would reconsider. Firstly I would not make NS10's your primary monitors. But you have a nice set of monitors anyway. With me I use Mackie HR 824's as my main speakers. I was lent a set of NS 10's for about 6 months a while ago and I must say they were amazing at translating. I was sorry to give them back. I found I was using them more and more.

They are excellent at letting you hear you mix in a different way and I found that after some tweaking on NS10's the mix sounded even better on the Mackies and also on everything else. If you can pick up a good set for a reasonable price I would do it for sure. They don't tell much about the bottom end but they are unforgiving in the mid range and that is why they are very good.

Make sure you know their history if you are going to buy them and maybe do a test to make sure.

Computer speakers can also be used for testing mixes and they can also do an excellent job. The worse they are the better. Just make sure you monitor down at low volumes on the computer speakers then they will reveal the most about your mix.
