Released today. Introductory price $59. A little higher than I'd hoped for, may have to pass. The $300 "regular" price seems a bit overoptimistic on Boz's part. But the plugin does appear to check every box for what you need in a delay: ducking, pitch mod, distortion, chorus, etc. Not much missing that I can see.

$59 is too high for me. I guess I'm in the spoiled category, but with Hornet's Deelay and Tritik new tkdelay (excellent) both for under $15 I think I'm good.

I spent the afternoon working with the sonitus delay on vocals and finally got a good grasp of it after never really using a delay. Do you like the Hornet delay more than sonitus? Like you say, for the price I may go for it and it looks good...

I am guilty of underestimating the Sonitus stuff from the start. Everything in that set is very, very good. If Cakewalk would redesign the gui and make them a bit more modern looking I bet you anything we would all talk about them more. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find the sonitus delay is better than anything else I own, but I really like that new one from Tritik right now. The Hornet Deelay is a simple thing by design. Simple is what I'm wanting most of the time for a guitar solo or whatever. Tritik has a much deeper feature set.

The Sonitus delay remains my first-call delay plugin, even after adding many, many others to my kit over the years - including the amazing (but complicated) Timeless2. Unfortunately the Sonitus still has some bugs that will likely never be resolved, so there are situations where it's just too much trouble to use. This new one looks like it might just have an answer to every objection I've ever raised about a delay plugin. Feature-wise, I don't see anything lacking. It even does ducking, which is the main thing I use Timeless for, and has a few tricks even Timeless doesn't have (e.g. distortion). It doesn't have the sophisticated modulation of Timeless2, or all the filter options, but those don't come into play for 95% of delay applications.

Well, I've had a couple hours now to get familiar with Boz's Imperial Delay, and I gotta say it's pretty durn slick. 300 bucks' worth of slick, dunno yet. That's more than double the list price of FabFilter Timeless2 ($144) and way more than other complex full-featured delays (e.g. U-He MFM2 $79), even higher than the premium classic Echo Boy from SoundToys ($179). Clearly, it's not positioned to compete with the likes of the HorNet delay, but that's not a fair comparison since low-cost delays offer only basic functionality. Imperial Delay is definitely high-end in terms of features. So far, I can list on one finger what I've found to be missing, and that's the ability to type in precise values - not a deal-killer by any means. In terms of ease-of-use and quickness to set up, it's not quite up there with the Sonitus Delay but it's not at all difficult to use. A few knobs aren't immediately obvious, e.g. "Smear" and "Dynamic Feedback" but they're worth the effort to figure out. The most important settings (e.g. sync, tempo, and mode) are clear and simple. I can see this being my go-to delay for when fancy Timeless2-style modulation isn't needed. Hopefully, they'll re-think the price point and put it under a hundred bucks. Leaving it at the introductory price of $59 would be even better, and almost guarantee a hit. At $50, Boz could do for delays was Sean Costello did for reverbs, making it a must-have plugin. Yeh, it's really that good.

Hey Bitflipper. I do wish you would try the demo of the Tritik tkdelay. It isn't Fab Filter, but it has plenty of tools. Modulation, Saturation, 2 filter types. I would really value your opinion of it. He seems like a nice guy too. It's $11.79. http://www.tritik.com/products/tkdelay/

That one's on my to-do list. I've even downloaded it but just haven't gotten round to unzipping it for a test. [EDIT] I was unable to install the tritik delay. The DLL is there, but the plugin failed to complete its initialization so all the registry keys aren't there. But it's still beta, so maybe I'll try again after the 1.0 release.

Been playing with the dynamic feedback and ducking features on Imperial Delay. Love it! I was able to put on a long, long delay that only kicked in as notes were fading out, and did not muddy the lead line itself. Timeless2 can do this, too, but not nearly as easily.

Can't you do that with an automation envelope on the output of just about any delay?

I wouldn't usually do it with automation unless I just needed the effect to appear in a few places. You could do something similar with a sidechained compressor or gate on a 100% wet delay bus. But this particular feature is different from the usual ducking methods you might do in Timeless2 with an envelope follower or envelope generator. In Imperial Delay you have two separate feedback amounts that it fades between, depending on the signal level. I imagine Timeless2 could probably accomplish the same effect by modulating the feedback knob from an envelope follower, but it wouldn't be an easy thing to dial in. As you can tell, I compare every delay to Timeless2. It's the standard for what's possible with a delay, but it's also the standard for obtuse complexity versus simplicity. Sometimes with Timeless, I get so involved in fiddling with the thing that I forget what it was I was originally trying to accomplish.

This plugin was really getting beat up over on KVR before the mods shut the thread down. The discussion was all about the high price, and the few posters who commented on the plugin's actual merits were shot down as being off-topic. I'm pretty sure most everybody here will agree with the common sentiment, that no delay plugin is worth $300 in today's market. But I'd like to hear your thoughts. I wrote to the developer, and he told me the same thing he posted in the KVR thread: he's inspired by the Waves model of list high and have periodic sales. The strategy does seem to work for Waves (their tape delay is $250, and that's a current sale price).

I haven't found a $300 delay plug-in worth $300 to me. Aside from the delays mentioned above, the Eventide H3000 Factory Native Plug-in carries a $349 retail price. I have seen it on "sale" for $200 and that is quite a bit for the plug-in. I have played around with the Imperial Delay a little bit. The VST3 version appears to have a problem with mono tracks in X3 (which I just submitted to the developer). The VST2 version seems to work OK. It is a nice delay probably worth $59. I don't care for the Waves pricing strategy (at least they have a history of commanding high $$$ back in the day) or the continuous 50% off MeldaProduction approach. I prefer the ValhallaDSP approach or intro pricing like u-he does. Of the two new delays I have played with, I much prefer the tritik UI. The Imperial Delay with it fixed UI and animation is not visually appealing. I am not sure Imperial Delay is worth 5x the tkdelay much less the almost 10x when both go retail.

I wish I could get tkdelay installed, but the self-initialization fails when SONAR tries to scan it. Speaking of the Eventide, have you seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCd0fIrkxqQ Bear in mind that the video was created by Brandon Drury, who is working in partnership with Boz, a fact not mentioned in the video. Still, it does show off a cool feature of the delay, and it's not even the coolest feature.

Hi there! I'm the tkDelay dev. thanks clint & scook for mentioning tkDelay ! @bitflipper : I wish you could test it too! :) as scook said it won't work on XP. Otherwise do you have a warning message or something when the scan fails? When tkDelay's beta do not show up on windows, then most of the time installing the following package from microsoft fixes it : hum. I can't post urls cause I don't have 5 posts on the forum, but just search for : "Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4" when you click the download button, microsoft will propose you 3 files to download, choose vcredist_x64.exe if you have a windows 64bit, or the 32 one if your windows is 32bits Please let me know how it goes directly at support [at] tritik.com (If there's another cause to the issue I'd like to find out what it is so that I can fix it for the next release)
oh, about the pricing... yep, we definitely don't all have the same strategy here :) no, really the thing is simply that it's the first tritik's plugin, so the 'marketing goal' is not the same, and I'm also surely pretty bad at marketing haha but I just wanted to say please don't make any early judgement on tkDelay just based on its low price. Hope you'll find the way/time to install and use it. mail me at support[at]tritik if something does not work, and I'll assist you. charles

hi. yes, basically It's just some builds settings, stuff like that. Nothing that I can't overcome to be honest. on kvr there's other user(s) asking for xp support too. I would not have thought there were still so many xp users. is there many xp users around here? if there's a real demand I may make it work on xp. still thinking about it.

You'd be surprised how many XP-based DAWs there are in the world. Just as there are still many millions of XP machines on office desks all over the world. When you have a rig that works, you need a compelling reason to toss it out and start over. Not everybody cares about RAM limitations - believe it or not, some people still just record real musicians playing real instruments. Windows 7 will only be an option for another month, and everybody hates Windows 8. I'll admit, though, that I am in the process of building a 64-bit DAW so that I can use all of my sample libraries. But the XP machine will continue to be used for months to come while I shift gears. So if you need somebody to beta an XP-compatible version, I'll happily volunteer.

Recording real musicians playing real music is not the only way to keep an XP machine going. There is another approach which is what I do. I am still running a 32 bit XP machine and very well happily might I add. get to use all my fave VST's and things. There is just so much out there still in 32 bit form only. And you dont have to suffer bridging issues either. I produce a lot of music that is synth based but once you get the synthesisers outside the computer and in your room everything changes. No large amounts of RAM required now because all that is being handled by hardware. And to be honest I think in many ways it still handles this job much better. Also if you use a digital mixer which is what I also do you can send all manner of audio buses or individual signals over to that for extra processing and mixing etc. This is another way to take the load off your computer setup. Even on the largest mixes that I am doing my main computer CPU is still only hitting 60 to 70% max. So it never falls over or crashes, it just keeps on working like a dream. I also have a UAD card installed. That really helps big-time. Can't recommend it highly enough. That can cover about 70% of the mix requirements alone before the computer CPU is even approached.

I don't know how large the customer pool is for a new XP compatible plug-in. However, if all it takes are some changes to the compile scripts, it would seem like an easy way to expand the potential customer pool for a start up company.
