Nash-vil or Nash-vul?
Long story - I'm in a drama team and we're putting together a show and we just started practicing last night. one of the subjects of this scene we're currenlty working on has 4 of the actors referring to the city "Nashville" in their dialog. the director stopped the first one and said that it's not "Nash-vul" - it's "Nashvil" we proceeded. the first person she corrected said it her way the next time he said it, but then every other actor said "Nashvul" from then on as well. they weren't being "disobedient" or even "playing" with her - it's just that they were saying what came natural to them. I wasn't in that scene, but I also say "Nashvul" and I'm from East TN (I'm from the Knoxvul" area! ). what I decided (rather vocally, I might add) was that the director grew up in Indiana (NORTH!) and the rest of us are all "southerners" (even tho technically those from Texas aren't really "southerners" but technically Mid-westerners being west of the Mississippi). so what should we say? how should "Nashville" be pronounced?

Clearly it's Nashvul. Ask anyone who lives there. Only a Northerner says "ville." What I'm confused about is "Midwest." I grew up in Michigan, believing that it was in the Midwest. Now you tell me TEXAS is Midwest. In 1800, Michigan actually WAS in the Midwest, but that was before Jefferson's western expansion. No wonder I moved to California. At least I know this is in the West.

Whatever the correct pronounciation may be, I think we can all agree that saying, "Nash-Vile" is likely to rile up some good ole boys. Hope that helps.

It's Nashburg. But actually it's four distinct syllables...Na-ush-vee-ul. With the Na pronounced as in Laugh...the ush pronounced as in hush..the vee pronounce as in V...and the ul pronounced like in ultimate. Draw it out as slowly as possible when saying it. Or better yet, just say Guitar Town. Only please pronounce it Gi-tar Town. HTH.

jamesg1213 Change the script to Chicago. nope - the setting's in Chicago. and they're referring to Nashvul because it's where the main character came from after leaving her singing career. and baps - everyone I know in that area calls it Luevul. not Luisville or even Luisvul.

I say, Insist on your Artisitic Integrity! Toss the director's corporate shackles aside, and release your artistic interpretation of the script! If you feel it should be pronounced, "Nashvul", then by Elvis, do so. If you feel your character should wear a gigantic oversized tutu, carry a live python, and skip like a lumberjack, then it is your destiny to do it! There. See if the director mentions that pronounciation now.

If she is the leader I would try to do it her way unless she caves....Having been in similar leadership positions it just adds rust to the wheels instead of oil. If she is an easygoing soul then it might not matter but if she is one of those high strung artistic types don't pull her chain.

she's not high strung. we have been together as a group doing many minor skits for a couple of years and we know when to push her and when to "do it her way" and then we get on stage and forget what she said and do whatever comes out of our mouths anyway.

I have to confess this comes close to home as I can be one of those goal oriented nuts. In my most recent leadership position we had a guitar player who recently joined the group. Everything I wanted to do was second guessed by him. It got to the point where he was actually taking the reigns. I was tired and ready for a rest anyway and after this went on for awhile I just said,' That's It, you run the show", packed up my stuff and left after 2 1/2 yrs as leader there. This happened during a practice and mouths dropped open. So now he is the man. I took a small break and now I'm back in doing it again somewhere else. I'm in no hurry to lead any more though. At least for the time being let someone else do it........I'll play with X-1

I was going to ask if it was Yankees saying it or Southerners. Being actors, you should act like Northerners, including mispronunciations. I went to high school in Fayetteville, NC and always pronouned it like it's spelled, but the Fayettevillians always pronounced it "Fedvuhl".
