Need Some Win 8 Unbiassed Reviews from Sonar Users
Please chime in if you've been using Win8. I think this would be useful for all users that are thinking about the upgrade. Please try to be as impartial as possible - NO fanboys, or anti-MS people. Separate in 2 please:
1. How do you find the experience of Win8 by itself. Do you have to do a lot of customizing to get to something you can live with? etc...
2. How do you like it with Sonar? Any problems? Any hacks that need to be done? etc..
Feel free to add anything else that you feel might be interesting.
Thanks.

CakeAlexS Articles here https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22windows+8%22+sonar&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&redir_esc=&ei=RHB8UJdNpqvRBdHKgOAD LOL - thanks CakeAlexS - but I wanted an IMPARTIAL reviews... Just everyday users etc... I saw the Cake article, but it's not what I'm looking for. It's very useful in the info it presents, but often it lacks that 'real world' testing that saw X1 advance from a to d versions. Numbers are great, but we're doing art, not math, so I'd also need to know the feel of it and how it handles. For example a lot of people fee uncomfortable with the new layout. Of course those are just regular users, hence my post on the Sonar forum to get prespectives from Sonar users, not just regular ones.

unless you have a time machine, time will tell 1) because sp1 normally fixes a lot in windows.. (any longterm win users who moans about it before then should learn by now) 2) the sonar for win 8 isn't available yet that will give you the TRUE answer we (audio / video folk) aren't a high priority for MS , where as tablet users are *shrugs* and remember what "fun" we have with certain companies and their drivers.. e.g. me with m-audio ozone drivers for 64 bit that shouldn't have even got thru beta they were so bad!!

I have a celeron based toshiba laptop that was just hangin around. I put windows 8 consumer preview on it just to do some testing. It runs on that celeron like a raped ape. A celeron has never gone this fast. I put Sonar and my control surface code for to test and that works too. While i detest the metro (or whatever) interface, dumping to the desktop is like windows 7 on nitromethane. They have really slimmed this version down just when software bloat seemed irreversible. It has no start button but I have an after market start button and menu that makes it feel like 7. But quicker.

I've been running SONAR X2 under Windows 8 since the final code was released several weeks ago. From a stability standpoint, Windows 8 runs just as well, if not better than Windows 7. One big caveat is to make sure that the drivers for your hardware are Windows 8 compatible. After upgrading, I discovered that my V-Studio 700 console/audio interface would not work with Windows 8 at all. Supposedly, Roland is working on Windows 8 drivers though. For the past few weeks, I've been limping along using a backup audio interface. SONAR X2 seems to run fine and is just as stable as X1 was for me. As far as using the Windows 8 interface, it took a little while to get used to it. However, once you do, you do start to realize how inefficient the old way was. A few tips: - To launch programs instead of finding/clicking an icon, just hit the Windows key and start typing the name of the program.
- Right-clicking in the lower left corner will give you a menu to many of the most used Windows features
- To close Metro apps, move the cursor to the top of the screen until it turns to a hand, click & drag the program to the bottom to 'throw it away'
- For most people, it's pretty easy to forget that they are running Windows 8 after a few days.
- The 'missing' Start menu was annoying at first, but for me all it did was highlight how inefficient it actually was at what it did.

Hi firefly9000 In short:- XP SP2 X32 = very good Vista SP0 X64 = bad Vista SP1 X64 = bad Vista SP2 X64 = great Windows 7 SP0 X64 = great Windows 7 SP1 X64 = great Based on my personal testing with the Consumer Preview and testing with X1d and S1V2, CW's testing and reported results, and other users experieicne across a myriad of Audio Forums, Windows 8 X64 is without doubt the best DAW audio O/S so far. Even compared to the latest MAC o/s Win 8 X64 is light-years ahead in terms of very-high-CPU-load-ultra-low-latency DAW work. There is of course a but .... All of the above is correct provided you have [ at least ] and audio card and video card with up-to-date Windows 7 X64 drivers or Windows 8 X64 drivers. The days of the operating system being any sort of blocker or hinderance or "limiter" to what can be done in-the-box are long gone. Tim

MS has said they wont have the normal update schedule. They will be updating Win8 much faster. In fact there was already an update last week that fixed some audio/video issues.

Sounds pretty good out of the gate. They were saying that previews of Win 8 got less than enthusiastic reviews, but what I can gather, at least on this forum, that's not the case.
Need to clarify one thing though: If software is Win 7 compatible, does that mean that it's also Win 8 compatible? In other words, is there backwards compatibility software-wise? Anyone had problems with synths, samplers or plugs? With hardware I take it that in most cases you need Win8 drivers.

The only apparent problem having here is cannot print. HP printer attached to computer: found, driver installed, shows in devices, no errors, no printing. Network shared printer: found, windows update driver, shows in devices, no errors, no printing. This is for 2 win 8 computers. Same issue with cameras. Lots of messages at the MS forums about this stuff. And the pundants are also commenting. One dude reported that Canon will provide support when w8 is "officially" released. Sorta weird. It got released to enterprise subscribers in August. Should have printer support by now, more than a year after the initial preview. My wife's computer appears to be working without issue: Office: OL, word, excel,,, IE, audio, videos,... Just can't print. The music computer has crashed. But I can not connect such directly to Sonar X2. I figger it is the audio device drivers (still 32 bit), or some other such device. Nothing clearly identified in the event log, mini-dumps,...

Mackie Control here and Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. I use MIDI to connect the MC. I have had no problems what so ever with Windows 8. Windows 8 is fabulous! Sonar X2 and Windows 8 were made for one another. One thing though is be sure to get Windows 8 drivers for all your hardware.

For those who miss the Start Menu, you can download one from IOBITS that works just about the same as the original. Personally, I just pin all of the applications I use a lot to the Taskbar, so they are never more than a click away (kind of like a Mac...) Peace, Tunes

I love win 8, and my impression is that X2 runs a bit better in it. I don't like the metro UI, so I downloaded the free Classic Shell, which allows you to get back the Win 7 start menu, and disable the metro UI.

Win8 is working well for me with Sonar. I do wish MS would put the Start Menu back and allow booting directly to the Desktop, but both are such minor things I definitely don't want to add a hack to the OS for them. I rarely used the Start Menu and getting to the desktop is literally the blink of an eye so while on principle I'd like them back I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. Dan

I had Windows 7 x64 and did an upgrade to Win 8, keeping all my apps and data. 1) I like Windows 8. It "feels" faster but the benchmarks (outside of Cakes Sonar benchmark) say it is the same speed as Win 7. The only customization I did was to place the tiles of the my most frequently used apps on the modern UI (Chrome, Thunderbird, Sonar X2, etc...). I also added a few keyboard shortcuts (I.E. ctrl-alt-S opens Sonar, ctrl-alt-C opens Chrome) 2) All my apps and drivers, including Sonar X2 and m-audio Profire 610, ram out of the box. I have not run into any issues yet. The new UI takes some getting used to. I jump to the desktop a fair amount. I am not going to get a Start Menu replacement app. I am getting used to and liking not having it. I can get to my less frequently used apps without the Start Menu quicker in Win 8.

My experience on Win8 (x86) is good, and I didn't had any trouble (except I had to buy a new video card, since the old one was really old). Lots of stuff here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2012885/20-must-know-windows-8-tips-and-tricks.html Including booting directly to the desktop, without need to enter password. ------------------------------- I have placed shortcuts on the desktop for the most used applications. Including Control panel. I have placed the task bar on the left, and have it auto-hide. And I have a link to the all-users start menu, that I have arranged with folders so I do not have to waste my life scrolling the start screen to find one shortcut in the sea of dozens, without structure. --------------------- w8-64 X2 crashes the computer when closed. 8.5 and X1 do not. Figger it is the audio drivers. But, 'tis strange mostly happens at exit. I have had X2 crash in w7-64 after opening closing lots of projects. But it did not freeze the computer. The lack of printing to shared network printers is still an annoyance: very vista. Did get my wife's camera and skype working last night. Logitech updated the driver. On one forum a dude wrote the only way he could get the printers to work was to create a Homegroup. I don't need another door and key.

I am very pleased with the £25 upgrades. On my PC workstation I get a lot of features I wanted from '7 Ultimate' in Win 8 Pro for a fraction of the cost, plus I am finding it generally a bit more stable, leaner and cleaner. My wife (who isn't very 'technical') is using purely the Metro interface to launch things like her browser, skype, photo, music and mail apps. For her, Metro is a lot better and simpler to use. So on their own, Desktop and Metro each have their own benefits and strengths. I feel however, that they just haven;t been integrated very well together (if at all). So for my workstation I downloaded Start8 from Stardock for < $5 which gives me some cool menu options so I can stay inside my desktop environment...and I haven't missed Metro yet. On my laptop, I use a combination of both but still feel I have some more tweaking to get it right for me.
