A few web sites that have some useful stuff to get started for free..... I have a few books on recording and live sound and such, but I actually bought them after I had gotten into this thing....

    poke around in these sites:

    TAXI

    Tweakheadz

Izotope  look at the downloadable guides...really good stuff in them.

just a few online resources to get you started.  A google search will turn up ton of stuff.

And if that isn't enough... you can always visit a book store or a good music store and they will have some books.... the price of the books these day will set you back some bucks... but, they also have a wealth of information in them.

Another way.... to learn this craft... just jump in and post in the songs forum your results, ask for crits. People are willing to help you. I think I have learned more from participating in the songs forum and not only from the commentary and advice on my music, but listening to what others are doing and listening to the songs and the advice given , and asking questions on... how can I do this better, or how did you get that sound or tone.... most people are willing to share their knowledge with you.

Always remember when posting and receiving comments.... it's not personal.... it's professional.

I would recommend KHR as did "mysonar8".  Seems to be strait forward without a lot of filler.  Guy has a sense of humor too.

I am a big fan of the book, Guerrilla Home Recording, by Karl Coryat.

    http://www.amazon.com/Gue...o-Matter/dp/0879308346

This book stresses the importance of recording technique  - no matter what equipment you have  - and helps you understand the basic concepts of putting a song together.

My wife bought me a copy of  "The everything home recording book" fro christmas a year or so back,  and I appreciated it but there was very little in it that I learned from reading it.... I will say her heart was in the right place and it has good basic info for people just getting started.... it looks good on my shelf.

We really ought to have a sticky for recommended books; the topic comes up so often.

Let's start with two must-read standards that eventually end up with on everybody's bookshelf:

    Mixing Audio by Roey Izhaki
    Mastering Audio by Bob Katz

A recent addition to my recommendations list:

Mixing, Recording and Producing Techniques of the Pros, by Rick Clark

Lightweight but a good read if you can borrow it from someone:

Sound FX: Unlocking the Potential of Recording Studio Effects
    , by Alex Case

If you want to understand the technical stuff better:

Digital Audio Explained for the Audio Engineer by Nika Aldrich
The Master Handbook of Acoustics by F. Alton Everest
Principles of Digital Audio by Ken Pohlmann
On the Sensations of Tone by Hermann Helmholtz (free pdf download)

    For insights into producing:

Behind the Glass, Volumes I and II by Howard Massey

Humor, purely for entertainment (but highly recommended):

The Daily Adventures of Mixerman, by Mixerman

    On my Christmas wishlist:
Zen and the Art of Mixing by Mixerman

Expected in my mailbox this week:

I'll add more as I think of them. I've been meaning to put my reading recommendations into one place.

I have no idea if this book is any good, but it is my favorite book cover photo:

Although a book on microphone technique, whoever put the cover photo together obviously did not read the book. How many things can you spot that are wrong in this picture?

Get a few books about basic electricity.

This is actually some really good advice.  A basic understanding of electron theory, ohms laws, and basic electronics with respect to amplification circuitry would prove really helpful in understand what actually happens when you turn a knob or adjust a level.
