Need a little help with creating a Sidechain

Hello all !

Although i've read few tutorials, i'm unsuccessful at creating a working sidechain using Sonar X3.
I want my Vocal reverb volume to be lowered only in the middle of sentences using a sidechain with compressor in order to do that. (When the vocals play, it triggers the compressor which lowers the reverb volume)

I have my vocal track named " Vocals " which is send to Master Bus
I have a Reverb bus named " Reverb " with a EQ > DeEsser > Plate
I've added a Send with " Reverb " bus on the " Vocals " track

Now i'm stucked here quite confused. Could someone help me doing that sidechain trick the right way ?
Sorry for the inconvenience and Thanks in advance.

Just put a compressor on the reverb buss. Keep in mind anything else you send to the buss will duck the reverb also.

First of all you have to make sure that the compressor has sidechain functionality (many don't). There should be some button on it to accept a sidechain signal. Once you've engaged that button, Sonar will add the compressor to its list of possible send destinations in the send menus.

Then it's just a matter of enabling a send on the vocal track, setting its destination to the compressor in question (it should be on the list) and then adjusting the sidechain compressor to taste on the reverb track.

So from your vocal track you should have two sends:

    1. A send to the reverb bus
    2. A send to the compressor on the reverb bus
The important things to note are that the compressor MUST be sidechain-enabled, and you MUST create a send from the track you intend to use as the sidechain source (or "key" as it is known) to the compressor. Only then will the sidechain work.

If you set things up as described, what timidi said above about everything being sent to the reverb bus ducking the reverb will not be true. The only thing ducking the reverb will be the signal which is sent to the sidechain input of the compressor, and that will only be the vocal in your case.

That looks about right. Sidechaining in Sonar is a bit weird though. I might try something like that myself although I don't have Fabfilter, I have Waves H-Reverb which I'm sure you can sidechain.

try the comp before the verb also.

Fabfilter C2 does sidechain, you have to clic the " EXT " button on the sidechain window, as shown on the pic via the red arrow.

Could you explain please ? :)
I don't see the point, as it won't duck the reverb if i put the comp before the verb.

Indeed. I think he commented sharke's post, then he somehow deleted his posts.

You can't sidechain h-reverb it has a built-in dynamics part which allows you to gate, comp or de-ess.

The context here is sidechaining a compressor that's after a reverb, and you can do that with any reverb as long as you have a sidechainable compressor to go after it. To sidechain a reverb would be meaningless as far as I can see. You're right though, H-Reverb does have built in dynamics, there is a ducking feature in it.

The point was I was correcting my previous statement. I was thinking of Metafilter which has a similar interface. ;-0

The PC4K S-Type Expander/Gate was a paid module. It has a side chain as do other paid modules: CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier and PC4K S-Type Channel Compressor. None of the paid modules are available for purchase ATM. The PC4K S-Type Bus Compressor is the only PC module bundled with CbB (also SONAR Producer X series and Platinum) that has a side chain.

The Sonitus Compressor and Gate have side chains. They may be loaded in the FX Rack or ProChannel.
