Need a new interface. Suggestions please?
Finally gonna scrap my octacapture, fed up with the crashes and lack of Roland support. Any suggestions on a cakewalk compatable interface with 4 to 8 inputs with decent pre's? I don't mind spending a dollar for value. Running Windows 10, SPlat, with need for midi and HiZ inputs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

The cure to Sonar crashing is either RME or MOTU - both are rock solid, you just need to pick the interface with the I/O options you need. all of MOTUs later units share the same driver, and RME is known for outstanding driver support even for their older devices. (BTW, just a few days ago I fired up to my previous Roland interface to get access to the hardware synth inside ... I was quickly back in crash land where I haven't been since going with MOTU)

From personal experience the RME UFX firewire and USB2/3 drivers are solid with any application I've used in Windows or MacOS and the pres are good, transparent and very low noise as are the line inputs. If you need fewer inputs other RME interfaces have a similar reputation. RME's Totalmix software is enormously powerful, allowing all kinds of routings, multiple monitor mixings and does pretty much anything a modern digital mixer can do.
And if you ever need a small, fully functional live sound mixer an RME interface with an ADAT unit or two added if necessary in a 2 or 3 unit rack and controlled by Totalmix on a tablet/laptop makes a very compact and capable setup.

I also went from crash-a-minute Roland interface to an RME, and it was totally worth it. RME are as good as their reputation, and buying one transformed my DAW experience. I could not be happier with my Babyface.

If you have the budget, you won't regret anything RME. It's the type of audio interface that'll work for 10 years... and you'll never give it a second thought. MOTU audio interfaces are also very good. Both offer low round-trip latency, solid drivers, and good sound.

Not sure what the problem is with the computer and Windows 10, but is isn't the Octa- Capture. I have the Octa-Capture and it's been rock solid with Sonar up to Platinum 2016.12 release. I had one series of crashes with with Sonar and Windows 10 and that was due to a Sonar pre-release. After installing the newer formal release, my problem was solved. What specific problems are you having with the Octa-Capture and Sonar with Windows 10? Are you using your Windows 10 computer with Sonar as the dedicated DAW or do you have other software installed besides Sonar and Plugins. Do you have a link you can paste describing the problem that you've posted to the forums. Explain what you've been going through if you don't mind.

Not sure what I have changed but suddenly my Octa-capture is once again rock solid. I made a lot of changes during my month or tow of hell.....i allowed all the latest win10 updates, I stopped a ton of background applications, I have the latest Sonar updates, and I deleted and rebuild my aud.ini file. I do not know what one thing fixed it or if it was a combination, but I had a friend over the weekend and we worked for hours without a glitch. Fingers still crossed. If I was to get a new interface I would probably go RME, seems to be a lot of good press about that unit. Jeff

Mind not blown, but it's certainly impressive what $2,000 can get you. I love his PC solution. HDIM to a PCIe card. Now that's creative thinking. He didn't mention if this changes the RTL performance, but we will assume it doesn't 0.7ms RTL @ 96Mhz. certainly the way things will go and it's about time things improved. Audio interfaces have stagnated. I'll look forward to a 2 Channel version that might be more affordable.

Eddie TX See this and prepare to have your mind blown: https://youtu.be/JcCjfEjNZdY Cheers, Eddie
Not mind blown here, either To me it resembles another version of the emperor's new clothes... Slate seems to be a brilliant salesman but to me this is too virtual ... virtually everything is virtual, and starting from mics this adds up to too much of it for my liking... As regards latency he's not telling the full truth. There are other companies which offer super low latency via usb3.1/thunderbolt on windows (e.g. MOTU) whether they can go as low his claimed 0.7ms @96kHz I can't tell but in the price bracket Slate is playing, he has got some serious competition... if MOTU was to add a PCIe to AVB lan card, they would duplicate his system ... As regards latency once more he's not telling the truth again because all these emulation that he needs on top of his base line mics will eat CPU ... and soon the user will have to crank up some buffer this increasing latency ... As regards chaining devices Slate goes for Thunderbolt where cables are short and expensive while the rest of the world goes LAN (AVB or Dante) where cables are cheap and often already installed ... As regards his base line mics plus emu philosophy ... well, go and ask Roland uses who got burnt with products that only work with one brand (me included) who will tell you to stay clear from anything that cannot be used with another system ... think long term support... think selling this later... nightmare This video was interesting to watch. But I'm out ... it's up to you if you go all in

Funny to hear Mac heads talk about latency problems, that are NOW FINALLY fixed. Talk about drinking the Kool Aid! Case in point: in 2012 I built a super cheap machine, i3, all the parts came to about $450, with a Motu 424 PCI card, that I used to track my XR7 album; did a few sessions, with up to 5 musicians live, individual headphone mixes for each, all in the box in realtime at 64 sample buffer size ALL DAY LONG. Not a glitch!

Eddie, you don't have to defend the product. It's cool but way out of most of our reaches anyways so relax. Be happy with our equipment specs because that's what we can afford. He seems to have built a top quality interface out of top quality parts.. so it's like $$$$. And anybody watching this new trend in advertising should be a bit cynical. "Hey Joe, gather up the factory workers I need to shoot a U tube announcing the new interface, and see if you can rig up some sort of applause sign." I reminds me of the one I watched from Behringer announcing the X air 12 and 18. Very impressive presentation,, the product then disappeared for almost a whole year before it was released. Obviously had issues. But now they are out there and doing fine. Mr Slate is a good promo man and deserves to do well in these modern times. I wish there were more like him instead of the usual repackaging of the same old thing and marketing hype that makes it into more than it really is.

Eh, I'm not sure what your point is here, buddy. Should we disparage or ignore products that are priced higher than entry-level gear? I'm not assuming anything about what this forum's participants can or cannot afford. For someone who can swing the fee for a nice guitar or synth, Slate's stuff shouldn't be considered out of reach. In my view, VRS represents incredible value, as long as it works as advertised. On paper, the interface has features and specs way beyond the competition at its price point, and the mic / preamp modeling enables input quality that previously was attainable only from the most well-stocked pro studios (I say that based on real-world reports from VMS users). Bundling the mics with the interface and pricing it so aggressively is great news for anyone looking for pro-quality sound from a modest home studio. Bottom line most apropos to the thread: anyone looking for a new interface around the VRS' announced price of $2k ($3k with a 6-mic bundle) might want to wait until it comes out and then decide. Cheers, Eddie

Five years ago I paid $1800 for an RME UFX. And over the years I have spent in excess of $3000 on three top quality mics (AEA R84 Ribbon, AKG The Tube and 2 AKG C414s). If I were starting out today, or upgrading from an entry level interface, I would probably put my hands on the whole Slate package if it works the way it says on the tin.
