Need constructive critique of mix please
Hi I am mixing my first DAW ITB attempt, there are many sonic issues from recording too hot, not having my good pre's arrive in time etc. and I'll learn from my mistakes. but can I get some CONSTRUCTIVE input please. I haven't done the final mix altough I did compress this version a bit to help. This was done as a pure solo attempt before bringing in the band. The only acoustical instruments are my sax and voice, the intro lead is a wx7 rest is all in the box synth and drums which I programmed. Post it to the Songs forum and you'll probably get more responses... Very "Power and the Glory" beginning  ... A little too reverb-ey for my taste, especially on the voices in the sibilant frequencies, but that may be what you're going for. I think the mix is good, otherwise. I would warm up the vocals some with EQ or a tube or tape saturation plugin. Same for the drums, a little thin sounding. Those are minor quibbles though. There's a lot going on there for a while towards the end... you might want to thin it out a little.

Nicely put together and arrangement, melodic. The vocals go a little out of tune at times, although the singer sounds good. Sometimes it sounds quite nice a little on the edge of tuneness, sometimes I think it misses.
Yeah, like agincourt says its a little over busy on the fade out end section.
The mix to my ears is nicely balanced but feels a little harsh on my pc speakers (although maybe its just my ears are a bit frazzled after a day with headphones)

Very nice production. Very dense mixes are difficult. The small timing offset near the end catches my attention a little off gaurd, but it think that's an easy edit. Excellent vocal comps. For an all synth production it's quite natural sounding rhythmically.
The only other point is... you should post this in the songs forum as there are regulars there that critique on a regular basis, very constructively I might add.

all points well taken-thanks so much, the recording too hot problem has haunted me with harshness throughout the song and mix, from now on it's -18 for me, much of this was 0 to +.5 How do I move this to the songs forum? I am using event asp8's for referrence, are the mids too soft as the events have strong smooth mids which may produce the inverse in translation...

Nice arrangement.
Although I'm listening on computer speakers and it is hard to get a good fix, the mix seems a bit bass shy. That might be why you think it is a bit harsh. I think it sounds pretty good, tho forward, with plenty of depth. However, there is no thump to it.

Really enjoyed this tune. Has a bit of a latin/samba vibe, which I happen to enjoy. Others have commented on the mix, which I'm sure you're fine tuning! Your voice is very good. Lot's of instrumentation going on here. Excellent composition. Keep 'em coming!

Very creative upbeat tune you’ve got here Larry. Tracking and mix is excellent. EQ seemed a little crowded around ~500Hz at times. Loved the song and lyrics.

good job, neat song but as stated a bit crowded at times...and the end just kinda fell off...I'd like to hear the end flow a bit better IMHO most "input" is by its nature is "CONSTRUCTIVE input" if someone takes the time and effort to listen and post they normally have soemthing worth consitering....it's normally the recieving team (person) that process it wrongly....even if someone trashes you (me) and says..."hey man that sucked" (which I'd not seen to date here) you can still process that in a way that will be helpful.....to insure you get POLITE feedback...your mum or grand-mum is a sure winner  good song, Great Message!

This is pretty cool :-) I agree in needs a bit more in the butt, some junk in the trunk if you will. But the interplay between the vocals is pretty cool, made me sit up and take notice. You can't really sit and relax and enjoy this, it kind of punches you in the face! That's not a bad thing, it's just different.

i though this was an excellent mix. What vocal equipment do you use? they sound great.
I would say that the soung can sound 'broken' at times. particularly 2;30-2;32

I like the arrangement and the compostition, i feel the music is fairly uptempo which s cool and i also feel like the music has been worked on alot which is good. overall i thought the mix was also good.

very nice, the vocals are fantastic, great songwriting. it does seem a bit too much reverb, and at times it sounds like too many instruments at once. if the arrangement were thinned some i think the fewer instruments would have more impact overall. excellent playing and programming. too.

Sorry mfc51 haven't read this thread in a while. To answer your question though, vocals were through rode nt2a mike in some parts and akg c414 in others using Trident s20 preamp into the daw. Lead guitar is not guitar it's me playing a wind controller through a roland jv1080 synth. I'll be remixing in June and reposting based on everyones kind input

I like the song.....the song message is good too. Kick the bass up a few more db.... there are a few places where the musical mix is extremely busy...others commented on this as well. Just because you CAN...doesn't mean you should. Thin it out a bit and it will sound better. Less is more! The vocals are good. The ending is a bit abrupt. EDIT: went back to your SC site to listen a second time and decided to listen to the bass mix. I liked it better...more bass and the vocals sounded clearer...It was easier to hear the words. I still thought the ending was to abrupt. If you are going to fade it...fade over a longer time frame and make it fade in a linear fashion..... or better still. ... work out an ending.
