Need experts' advice about virus scanner and Sonar

I have used PC TOOL security software in the past. I upgraded and then ran the anti-virus software. I was horrified when I found the software considers most of my VST plug-ins to be malware, and is waiting to delete them.

I got my money back when it actually quarantined a whole bunch of dlls including my Cakewalk VST adapter, Crysonic demos, Revalver live exe, and more!

Is this a common anti-virus mistake, or can malware turn innocent VST plug-ins into "evil" trojans? What anti-virus is smart enough to weed out malware while leaving audio vsts alone?

Any and all advice will be appreciated...mostly. :-)

I have used Eset's Nod32 for several years without any false positives on my vst's.

YES! Avira freeware and Pro would not allow the "FLUX" VST's.

I found a great and highly rated freeware: Avast - Antivirus and have had no further issues.

I'm no expert but I've used AVG free for many years without any false reports about VST or Sonar DLL files. This program was recommended to me by an IT professional, and I have no complaints. There is also a paid version, with more bells & whistles plus support.

I've tried most of the free AV's and, like Jonny above, have settled on Avast. Among other things, I like the ease with which it can be turned off and on in various modes.

AVG still does me good, but my best defense no where I go on the internet and not pushing yes, ok, install etc. if a random pop up comes from somewhere.

I havent had a virus in years, and my internet is always on when I work.

I have facebook going when I work, and I use lots of softsynths, plugs, etc.

    Not a problem...

    Thanks everyone!
I didn't know I had to get involved on a fine grain level with an anti-virus program to prevent it from messing with the files I count on.

I was hoping that I didn't have to do that with every anti virus program.

I guess everyone should study how their anti virus works, and make sure that the files that are being quarantined or deleted really are viruses, and not important dlls.

I wonder if a few of the bugs that are causing some people so much grief might be caused by important dlls being deleted by a security software scan?

I don't use virus scanning at all. I just don't do any risky behavior on my daw box. Browsing is kept to a minimum. No extra junk installed.

I could be wrong, but I've never seen virus scanners that didn't mess things up.

Ironically, one of the only times I've ever gotten a virus was at work, which they have multiple scanning engines running. I still got infected and had to reimage my work computer. I don't have much faith in virus scanning.

I have a Bullguard and it works fine on the DAW but next time it comes up for renewal I will probably swap to MS Security Essentials and save the fee.

One thing to remember is the risk of getting a virus from removable media is higher than from sensible internet use. In my company its the computers that are never connected to the internet that get the most infections.

Make sure you turn off Autoplay for all media and devices and never let a memory stick that has been to a photo print shop or a school anywhere near your DAW.

    Hi Glyn Barnes,

How do you turn auto play off?

In Windows 7 its in start menu - Control panel - Autoplay.  I can remember the location in earlier versions of windows and I am not near my VISTA DAW now to check but I think ist via control panel. Search for Autoplay in Windows Help and it should take you through the process.

This is the way I've finally gone as well. I've used all the free scanners at some point, but every now and then they change something radical in a new version or one of the upgrades gacks up and then you've got to spend six hours cleaning up a big mess. Now that MS has a scanner that works well it's a no-brainer to feed it updates and forget about it.

It's only on days when I'm REALLY bored I'll even run a full scan, I usually just target whatever new data I'm bringing in and scan it before doing an install. It's so great I don't even have to use AdAware, Spybot, or any of the other malware tools I used to use in combination with Avast and AVG.

Of course, all that said, my DAW spends very little time on the internet and I'm an old man now. My days of l33t warez-ing and needing every VST that I can find are pretty much behind me.

Another vote for MS Security Essentials. I recently replaced a paid-for KIS Licence with SE on my "general" PC installation (I use dual boot), simply because like most AV suites kaspersky's has grown into PC-slowing over-complex "do everything" bloatware. Configuring it to co-exist with a DAW is possible, but it's not a trivial task.

My DAW installation has no AV though - not even Windows Defender. Windows firewall is only running at the rare times I enable the wireless LAN for essential internet access, generally updates and authorisations. The fewer background processes the better.

If you do need to use a single Windows installation for DAW and internet uses then MSSE is relatively easy to switch off, and far easier to configure than the large AV suites.

Yah, the occasional web access for the DAW is a good thing. Updates, registrations, and uploads for things like soundcloud, downloads for things like freesound.... I get pretty tired doing sneakernet from my laptop when I can just turn on the network and grab it more quickly from the DAW.

And, like I said above, now that I'm "above board" on my software my DAW problems have dropped dramatically. Plus, having recently made a good image of my C Drive makes me very cavalier about it.

The only time I've ever gotten a virus on my own rig... is when I was weakened by the temptation of the fairer sex. I'm ashamed to admit it but sometimes the call is too strong to resist. And don't give me that look either! The rest of you fella's have strayed from the path as well... it's powerful g'dam it!

Oh, I also use both Avast free and MS Security Essentials. Malware Bytes also I use at work.

    MS Security Essentials is good.
MS just released a new Safety Scanner similar to Security Essentials intended for PCs
that are not constantly connected to the internet, don't have any connection to the internet,
or don't have a genuine copy of Windows.
