Need help advice studio instruments
Hello i,m new, I'm interested in theRIFFWORKS/ rifftracker line6 cause has instant drummer but i don't know if it's programmable but today i saw studio instrument and have a question.Basically i need a program to record my own songs with a drummer so...is it possible to program drumtrack?i mean if i write a song with a tempo on the verse and another tempo on the chorus can i program different tempo or variations on the drums?if not is there a program that do that?can i record separately for example the verse with a tempo and then the chorus with another tempo or variations and then match them togheter?i already have a program to record, protools but it's a little bit difficult and that's the reason why i'm interested in riffworks that seems easier, anyway does studio instruments works with protools?is it necessary a keyboard to play drums, bass and other studio instruments? i am not an expert of these programs/software so be patient..thank you!!

Ale, SI are VSTis - virtual instruments. they have some attached midi loops that come w/ the progam. Although they are stand alone instruments, I believe you need a DAW (like Sonar or Protools) to record midi info and then maybe you can save them w/in the program. I've got them but haven't used them much. They sound good and should do what you want if you'll learn protools to "play" and record them. As a side note, you'll probably be less confused learning to use one program (protools) to do your recording, rather than learning rifftracker (which I'm not familiar w/) and protools. Starting out using multiple recording programs is not the most condusive way to learn, as your question about SI shows. You have to sync up the two programs, also. You are just opening a can of slow worms. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Studio Instruments is a good value for money package. But look at the price and you can see the market segment it's aimed at. As you are talking Protools I assume there is a reasonable budget . You could certainly do better for drums. The Toontrack stuff (EZDrummer and Superior Drummer) is very good, There is also KitCore / DrumCore from Sonoma (same company as Riffworks) and BFD are all worth investigation. These all can be used with Midi loops (a far bigger selection of loops is included than with Studio Instruments.) The loops can be edited as required, or you can program your own either using electronic drum kit with midi out, midi controller pads, a midi keyboard, or manual entry of notes into the host sequencer software using a mouse. Jamstix has many supporters and some may jump in later. I am not familiar with the program but I think it may meet your requirements as the is some sort of AI that mimics real drummers. As for the other instruments in the pack, the Bass is good, but a more versatile and better sounding solution would be Trillian or the Native Instruments Scarbee basses. having said that i have Scarbee Jay and Pre basses and I still use the SI base occasionally. Likewise the electric piano would be bettered by NI Scarbee vintage keys or Lounge Lizard.

Hi, I got the Studio Instruments package with the MC5 purchase and I have to tell you that I have already had some fun with it, and the strings part is ... taking me away already. It works independently, which is nice, as I can just play it for fun on the Midi Keyboard and go crazy with it. Am already trying to figure out how I can extend/spread the tracks even more, so I can do 2 or 3 things at the same time, and extend the pieces or events even more. Took me a bit to figure out what those 4 squares on the bottom left and after I did some reading ... ohh yeahhh ... keyboard here we come! Of all these, the drum thing is not for me, at least for now, and the Bass examples are ... sad ... to my ear. I think the only bands that use those small bass sounds are the ones in bars! Other than that, so far so good.
As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Ale So i have to buy a midi keyboard?can i control the virtual instrument in an other way(mouse...)? There are some things you could do without a keyboard. You could load the Midi patterns that come with studio instruments (the selection is limited) and have them play the instruments. You could also enter notes by hand in the sequencers piano roll view or staff view, but this would be time consuming and the results would be pretty mechanical. Without a keyboard you will only get a fraction of the functionality.

Ale thank you, so with a midy keyboard i can control virtual instruments(piano, strings, drums, bass),right? is it good the korg nanokeys or the line6 midi keyboard? Yes with a midi Keyboard connected you will be able to play VSTi from the keyboard. As a minimum the keyboard should have velocity sensitivity (the harder you hit the keys the louder the sound) and a pitch bend and modulation control, some times there are two wheels, other times a lever that works in two axis. Which is better comes down to personal preference. Aftertouch is another useful feature. This can be used to control VSTi parameters depending on how much pressure you put on the keys. I would only consider the Korg Nano is absolute portabily is what you require, Standard size keys have evolved to be the size they are for a very good reason. By Line 6 , do you mean this? http://line6.com/podstudiokb37/ if so its a step up on the Korg as it has full size keys but it would only be a good buy if you were intrested in the built in pod farm stuff. Other things to consider would be the new A-PRO range fron Cakewalk, or the older Eridol models and M-Audio or Novation products. These also have a range of knobs and sliders which can be assigned to control DAW and VSTi parameters. Personally I woud not consider anything less than 61 keys but the shorter boards seem very popular. Even if you don't consider yourself much of a player I would go for the longest board you have space for.
